Have you attended school in Korea? What's it like?

Recommended Posts

How different is it from what we see in K-dramas such as Goong, Boys Over Flowers, Playful Kiss, etc.? I hear the work is heavily intense and that there's this big test similar to the SAT or ACT like we have here in the US but crazier because not only does it determine what college you'll end up in, but how you'll live the rest of your life career wise.

heard its a nightmare during middle school and high school. college is when they get to relax. they only get one chance to get into college and its not like america where you can go to college at any age even if you dropped out of high school.

from what i heard from a korean guy in my french class who lived in korea until he was 15, and he just gave anecdotes of his school, particular math class:

they supposedly dont use calculators in their math classes over there. they literally have to memorize things like root 2,  root 17, etc. things that we just pull out a calculator for because they're not allowed to use calculators. he said for his school they had to memorize the first 10 digits of pi (why? he didnt know himself). He said he was a terrible student though, lmao.

there are documentaries about this. from what i've seen it's tough. i don't know where students in k-drama's get all the time from to do all the things they do lol

LOL right? It's the same with America and our TV shows. I remember all these scenes that take place in the hallways as their getting to class, you know the locker scenes. You're only given that much chunk of time before school starts because students are still arriving and getting ready. In other between periods you are given an approximate 3 minutes to get to your next class. So to see these student characters have so much dialogue and action in between classes baffles me.

i agree. i'm not even in an american school but we don't get all that much time either. and all these romantic scenes of going to a cafe before or after class.. bih, before class i'm rushing because i'm always late, after class i'm usually rushing because homework. ain't nobody got that much time on their hands. in k-drama's especially they also have an awful lot activities after dark... rolleyes.gif

He must've been lying because it's impossible to do math without a calculator in some cases, especially in physics.

Like in trigonometry.

well he said HIS school made him memorize values we would normally have to figure out with a calculator, and you know that people who lived before calculators were invented had to figure out how to do trig and physics without a calc right? Besides he only lived in Korea until 15, and at that age korean kids are in their last year of middle school. And like i said he was only speaking about HIS school

you know abacuses exist, right? Those things are still used in Asia.

also idk if you're still in school but when I was a student in school, calculators were banned in most cases because our teachers wanted us to be able to do math without a calculator. And your teachers probably all had to memorize advanced math without a calculator. Millennials have it a bit easier compared to older generations in terms of doing math because most of us don't have to memorize advanced math like trig like the older generation had to since we rely on the calculator to do it all for us.

Do Korean students even have the time to have drama in general? Like the typical "Hey Haneul, I've heard you've been talking shit."

the documentaries i've seen definitely portrayed gossips and bullying etc, i mean you still have time between classes, during breaks etc. and you can't get a class entirely quiet lmao students will always find ways to talk i guess, you know the drill. i don't personally know since i didn't go to korean school or anything. but i do get the impression that they generally have to work a lot harder for school compared to here [european country]. i guess it also depends though... some students will be more pressured to be succesful in school than others. but yeah, i heard the stress factor is high and many spend most of their time studying laugh.png

I shit you not before I even started middle or high school I thought students actually did have such time in between classes. My childhood years watching Unfabulous, Zoey101, Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place, Ned's Declassified School Survival guide, Drake & Josh, etc. was all a lie!

where I went to high school, we have 5-10 minutes to get to our next class since the campus is built like a college where you have different buildings for different subjects, and the administration knows that it's difficult to get from Building A to Building B that are 5+ minutes apart from each other in less than 3 minutes unless you pack your bags early and sprint out the door the second the bell rings. This was pretty much what my high school schedule was like on regular days (we only have four periods):

0 period: 7:00 - 7:55

1 period: 8:00 - 9:30

*Advisement /Tutorial: 9:35 - 9:45

*Break / Tutorial: 9:45 - 9:55

2 period: 10:00 - 11:30

Lunch: 11:30 - 12:10

3 period: 12:15 - 1:45

4 period: 1:55 - 3:25

(Advisement is only on MWF so on days when we don't have advisement, we have a 20 minute break after first period. 0 period is only for people in certain classes/electives like Marching Band)

So as you can see, with the exception of 3rd and 4th period, we have a long break after 1st period which makes it easy to interact with friends/classmates  And this is at a southern California high school.

Of course this is just the regular schedule. It's different on our Late Start, Minimum, and non-regular days.

My friend told me that they don't get to use calculators for tests/exams twitch.gif

School ends at around 3pm, but there is something called '야간ìžìœ¨í•™ìе' which means After School Self Study. This is at school and she usually does it until 12am-3am I believe. She studies alllll day and has to wake up at 630am. So she gets about 3 hours of sleep a day. She sounds really tired of it and she's only been a high school student for three months ;-;  I feel bad for her D:

That would make sense since your school is made up of 2 buildings but that wouldn't make sense if it was just one, which is what I see in shows.

we have more than 2 buildings, I was just using Building A and B as examples. We actually have like around 8 different buildings.

It's like all shows set in high school are unrealistic. Kdramas, anime, american tv shows have all these characters doing random ass things and it makes me wonder: do these kids even go to class?
