Why do we allow words to have power?

All this talk about the N word, has me really thinking. Why in 2017 do some minority groups allow derogatory terms to still be issues of contention? I mean logically why do we allow bigots and racists the satisfaction of thinking they can insult us with mere words? Taking away the power makes them look foolish.

language has always been power. Especially when someone knows how to talk.

never underestimate the power of speech / language.

Language also has a HUGE impact on culture. (for Example: a tribe living in a cold region has over 20 words for snow).

Would you not agree that human nature plagues most of us with the desire to partake in the forbidden or taboo. It's one the reason why many so people partake in illegal drug use, because it is a thrill of sorts.

Couldn't the same logic be applied to language too? Certain words being taboo and forbidden only encourages people to want to say them more. Many want to be seen as provocative or edgy by saying these "forbidden" words and they feel justified and smug all the more.

yes, forbidden / taboo is tempting. When you use the shock effect of breaking taboo, its gets you more attention/clicks.
