Should people that falsely accuse others of rape be punished heavily?

I present to you 2 cases

Elizabeth Coast accused a man of raping her when she was 17. He went to prison for 4.5 years. She later admitted she made it up.

Her quote in court:

"I never forgot about Jonathan. My life was ruined by it and so was his. I decided to take serious my faith and to give up the lie. I may go to jail but I must right this wrong. I selfishly tried to protect myself. The truth is Jonathan lived in a physical prison and I lived in a prison in my mind"

Her sentence for lying and sending a man to jail: 2 months in jail than can be served over the weekends and she owes Jonathan $90,000

Her lawyer successfully argued this point: Don't punish her greatly because this will discourage women from coming forward in the future.

wanetta-gibson-sued-money-brian-banks.jp

Wanetta Gibson accused Brian Banks of dragging her behind the bleachers at school and raping her. He was facing up to 41 years in prison but was able to get it reduced to 5 years, five years of probation, and registering as a sex offender. Wanetta also sued the school and got a $1.5 million settlement.

Once he got out he set up a sting operation to get her to admit she lied. He got in touch with her through Facebook, arranged a meetup and wore a wire. On tape he got her to confess that she made it all up. She refused to tell prosecutors that she had lied so she wouldn't have to return the money she and her family had won in court.

Her sentence for lying and stealing $1.5 million: Nothing, no jail time served

The school did later sue her for $2 million and they won a $2.6 million settlement against her, but she will serve no jail time for lying and sending a man to jail for 5 years.

Her lawyer's answer though harharplz.png Gimme his number! I already like him

Of course they need to be punished heavily, just like how Yoochun's accusers are facing 2 years of jail each, it's not an easy thing because the public is always siding with woman and once you accuse a man of such a thing he's automatically condemned because "it's hard to prove rape, he must have done it" lol

They should rot in hell , it's not fun to destroy other people's lives and it's even less fun when you use such a serious thing like rape to play the victimhood card just because you're a woman. It's sexist and self-victimization at its finest.

How can you prove that someone was falsely accused? It's really hard to prove.

They admit, there are alibis too you know.

yes twitch.gif  they are the reason actual rape victims aren't believed and are scared to come forward.

i was actually in court where this white girl got completely SHREDDED for falsifying rape claims just to further her racist agenda against black men (she contradicted herself on several occasions and fabricated evidence)

You can't prove it easily. It is up to the accuser to admit they lied.

That's the problem. No one will ever believe the accused

Yes. False accusations ruin lives of those affected, and it also gives negative connotations to people who have actually suffered from rape but have yet to come forward. False rape accusations take advantage of innocent people and makes coming out as a rape victim even harder due to some one else's selfish decision to falsely accuse.

that's not even something that should be asked tbh

a rape accusation can destroy someone's life, it can make you lose a job, relationships, friendships and people will forever look at you as someone who was once considered a rapist

people who make up things like that should be locked in prison forever because they literally don't care about the consequences of their own actions and they clearly don't know how to live in society

100 rape victims can be proven true but it only takes 1 lie to shake the faith of the public.

That's why they should be punished harshly. They do powerful damage.

There are so many cases of men being falsely accused of rape, and who spend many years in prison because of shoddy legal guidance. A lot of the times they end up taking plea bargains out of fear of being placed on death row, even when they know they haven't done anything wrong. The justice system is so bad that it doesn't give cases the attention they deserve. If anyone in the U.S. (or otherwise) wants to learn more I recommend looking into and supporting the Innocence Project at https://www.innocenceproject.org/ and for those in California specifically, you can look here as well: https://californiainnocenceproject.org/

Needless to say, these victims pay a heavy price because of the lies of others. There is no justice. Proven liars need to be punished just as heavily as the innocent people they put behind bars, while at the same time, we need to protect real victims of rape who may fear repercussions for speaking out.

Here is an unfortunate case of a man that was exonerated with help from the California Innocence Project.

To learn more about his case you can click the link on his Twitter. He is now an advocate for the California Innocence Project. He's a very eloquent speaker, definitely worth hearing.

Honestly yes, because the ruin the accused's life. Even after they get in trouble and it's proved false, the accused still has to go around with people thinking "it was proved wrong, but he must have done something to make the girl fabricate a story" or something. Also because it makes actual victims scared of being called fakers. They deserve serious and heavy punishments.
