I guess it's hard to start discussions because there's so much less content about him out there compared to the other BNM boys.

 

But here's a question: did your impressions of him change after watching his vlive? Since he hardly had any talking cuts on the actual show there wasn't much to base his personality on, until now.

 

I was surprised by how talkative he is? He carried the conversation really smoothly and was a really engaging natural storyteller. I thought his personality would be similar to his BFFs Youngmin and Sewoon. More reserved and quiet. I'm pissed at Mnet for not showing that at all!

I've always thought he was a smooth talker, since his PR video and eye contact, actually. He was so charming then, that was when I decided to stan him, too, OTL he ended up being non-existent in the show.

 

I'm really disappointed that they didn't showcase his sweet personality as often as they should've. He was supportive, smiley, talented, and much more, but it was always shown in the sidelines. He was close to many trainees and took care of little Woojin alongside others (when Woojin sat on his lap ;;). In Park Woojin's and Daehwi's B-day vids, you can especially see how caring he is towards his BNM family. During the finale as well, he cried for his members, prayed for them, and felt the stress. He's the perfect boyfriend figure. Honey voice, gorgeous smile, talkative and sweet, loving... what's more to ask for?

(Mess I ended up rambling about my love for Donghyun. Welp.)

So I poked around Naver a bit today and found some interesting information:

 

APP Music Academy, Donghyun's first academy (to my knowledge), made a post congratulating him for passing his JYP audition and becoming a trainee on 11/04/2014.

M Contents Vocal Academy, his second academy, made a post congratulating him for passing an audition for a company he really wanted to get into on 06/08/2016 but said they won't reveal which agency until August.

So assuming he officially became a trainee around when he passed the auditions, he was a trainee at JYP for at most about 1 year 7 months and has been at BNM for at most about 1 year. On his profile, he says he has been a trainee for 11 months, which matches up to this timeline if he's only referring to his time at BNM.

 

M Contents also posted a preview video for his showcase performance on 06/02/2016. It shows him practicing the cords to his self-composed song "You're Pretty."

JeA said Donghyun taught himself how to play the guitar and compose from watching Youtube videos and Somi said he started while at JYP. So "You're Pretty" was written sometime between 11/04/2014 and 06/02/2016. It's probably the oldest out of the 3 songs we've heard so far (Produce 101 audition song, You're Pretty, and I Just You).

 

So yea those are my findings! Hopefully that was worth the read. xD

I've always wondered why all (iirc) of our BNM boys came from JYP. In his vlive a fan asked him how he got into BNM, and he said "let's not talk about that" so I became curious. Since the start of the show I just believed that the boys transferred from JYP to BNM for whatever reason. And a few days ago I came across this one tweet.

Oh man that made me even more curious. I think the staff person behind the camera must've signaled for him to not go into that story.

 

My theory is the audition was a closed audition and how trainees got invited to audition is what needs to remain hush hush/is complicated. BNM did a very good job of hiding the fact that they're producing an idol group. When the boys first introduced themselves as BNM trainees, everyone from Cheetah ("I need to call Rhymer-oppa") to the rest of the trainees was shook. If BNM had gone around putting up audition posters, word would have spread real fast.

 

Maybe Rhymer had ties with JYP and he got to pick from their pool of trainees who weren't set to debut anytime soon?

In any case, I hope we get to hear the story eventually!

 

Until then I'm down to believe San e ransacked JYP's trainee collection on his way out.

 

LOL the San E part got me like ??? I should dig up in that Tumblr account for more info because San E kidnapping the trainees sounds so out of the blue. I wonder if they (and the other hidden trainees!!) chose to transfer, though. But yeah, they definitely kept it secret until the show started, considering how they released the idol group audition poster during the show as well.

I know Daehwi was at JYP when Sixteen happened (2015) so if Donghyun was still at JYP then, they probably would've met. I don't know about Woojin. No one has mentioned much about his time there other than the Somi shoutout. I'd like to think they knew each other. Then the 4 that got sent onto PD101 would be the ones previously acquainted with Woojin. (Next thing you know, we find out Jaehee and Myunghoon also knew Woojin lol)

 

Omg all this pre-BNM Donghyun content makes sense why he wanted to join Brand New. But Hongdae Geondae and acoustic boy lol. Who you trying to fool

 

About the BNM audition, I remember seeing a post about it last year. I don't know if there were any prior to that. But I was actually surprised the trainees were not aware they were forming a boy group since the company is more high profiled than many of the ones on PD101. So wouldn't an audition for a company like BNM be more known?

Donghyun is perfect for Brand New! Visuals and vocals, just that type.

 

Brand New Music isn't known for idols groups, they have many successful solo artists and duos, including their indie label. Much of them are not what you'd consider "idols", rather they are considered artists. So hearing that they're creating an idol boy band specifically is surprising when you compare that to BNM's current image.

 

And they had an audition? I googled it and apparently they did, I didn't know that.

So while we're waiting for BNM to let us in on what they're planning, let's appreciate Donghyun's taste in music.
