Lookout: Episodes 9-10

Lookout9-10-00660.jpg&key=c8d0f53eac7f7c

Suji and Do-han are anxious to bring down a common enemy, but are they working together or against one another? Unless they straighten that out, it’s possible that they won’t know success, which would leave some very bad people free. In order to achieve their goal, they need to get on the same page, but that requires communication, not so easy when they are both buried deeply in the shadows.

EPISODE 9 RECAP

A loud tick-tock magnifies the silence as Prosecutor Oh sits with Chief Prosecutor Yoon. When Prosecutor Oh understands that he’s expected to take the blame for everything related to Woo-sung’s case, he recalls Do-han’s advice to use his leverage against the chief prosecutor. Prosecutor Oh reminds the chief prosecutor that he knows enough to derail his nomination.

Chief Prosecutor Yoon offers to pour Prosecutor Oh a cup of tea and notes, “If you do too much, it overflows.†The hot tea spills over, and Prosecutor Oh drops and breaks his cup. He’s asked, “It can’t be fixed, can it?†Chief Prosecutor Yoon then cautions, “Don’t make me an enemy.â€

In interrogation, Woo-sung denies the recorded claims about his release the year before. From behind the one-way mirror, Soon-ae tells Eun-joong that faced with Choi Myung-hoon’s testimony, Woo-sung admitted to kidnapping and attempted murder, but nothing else. Eun-joong concedes that they know nothing about how Woo-sung was released and Soon-ae worries that Suji’s efforts will be wasted if they can’t link Chief Prosecutor Yoon to the criminal. Do-han presents his resignation to Chief Prosecutor Yoon since it was his idea to release Woo-sung the previous year to cover up Prosecutor Oh’s mistakes. Do-han then bows in belated congratulations for the chief prosecutor’s nomination and is asked, “Do you want to remove Prosecutor Oh so you can take his place?†Do-han can hardly contain himself as he answers, “I’d like to be useful to you.â€

Chief Prosecutor Yoon asks what Do-han can do in return and he offers, “I will catch Jo Suji.†Do-han believes that the chief prosecutor is her real target and argues that an ally is needed on the joint investigative team who will catch her, yet protect the chief prosecutor.

At home, Do-han surveys an evidence board projected onto a wall that lists Yoo-na’s accident, the Missing Housewife Case (linked to Kyung-soo) and the Yian Apartment Murder Case (linked to Bo-mi). Do-han recalls Chief Prosecutor Yoon’s agreement to give him only one chance to catch Suji and wonders if he should follow his plan or take a dangerous shortcut. His television broadcasts the news that a sexual assault suspect was arrested after fifteen years.

At the hideout, Suji and Kyung-soo watch televised news of Prosecutor Oh’s resignation. Kyung-soo wonders why Chief Prosecutor Yoon didn’t resign and Suji mutters that he slipped away again. Do-han is behind the chief prosecutor when he announces a joint investigation to catch Suji. Kyung-soo recognizes him from Yoo-na’s case and applauds his survival skills as Bomi notes his close association to the chief prosecutor.

Chief Prosecutor Yoon makes it clear that Suji’s accomplices will be held responsible. Suji realizes that the direction of the investigation just shifted and Bo-mi suspects that Kyung-soo’s hacking left traces, but he insists it was flawless. Suji urges caution and explains she’s worried the others are in danger.

Wearing a patrol officer’s vest and hat, Suji exits an apartment building, only to be stopped by another officer. When she runs, he catches her and throws her against a car. And then we rewind through the previous thirty hours, showing us the highlights and stopping just before Do-han enters the Joint Investigation Headquarters. He greets the team as Soon-ae awkwardly returns the sentiment. Do-han declares it the perfect day to catch Suji.

Eun-joong walks in and Do-han reminds him that he works in the countryside. Not anymore, though; Eun-joong announces that he’s joined the team and Do-han quietly inquires if he used his father’s influence. Do-han laughs in delight when Eun-joong answers that he’s there to catch Suji because he can’t allow someone like Do-han to do it.

A prosecutor enters and introduces himself as PARK JOON-PYO, head of the joint team. Do-han becomes curious when he notices a glance pass between Eun-joong and Prosecutor Park.

Lookout: Episodes 11-12

Lookout-12-00115.jpg

Oh man, the stakes are mounting as we delve deeper in our character’s backstories. We finally find out about at least one of our sidekicks, but bringing up the past may have some ugly consequences for the future. I hope Do-han has several back-up plans in place because while he does spin a lovely tangled web, Suji may lead her fellow cohorts into a coup before he can complete his master plan.

EPISODE 11 RECAP

At the church, Suji gets the call that the kidnapper/molester, Jang-soo, has just picked up a woman in his taxi. Both Kyung-soon and Bomi urge her to go after him, but as she starts to head out, Suji remembers that the light on the confessional booth had stayed lit even after the priest had left, meaning someone was still inside.

She slowly walks over the confessional’s other door, but when she yanks it open, there’s no one there. She hurries out, and as she drives away, Do-han emerges from the shadows behind the church, watching her.

Lookout-11-00030.jpg Lookout-11-00029.jpg

Jang-soo drives through the night, his victim now unconscious in the backseat. Yikes, did he drug her? Not far behind, Suji follows Kyung-soo’s directions as he monitors Jang-soo’s route via the tracker that Suji had placed on his taxi earlier. Bomi worries that there are few CCTVs along the current route and she might lose visual on the car, but Kyung-soo assures her that he can follow the GPS signal. Of course, right at that moment, Kyung-soo loses the signal and Suji is driving blind.

Following the last known location, Suji comes upon a car that had just been in an accident and realizes that Jang-soo must have done a hit-and-run with it, knocking off the tracker she had placed on it. Spying a nearby shadowy bridge, Suji guesses that she knows where Jang-soo is headed.

In the shadow of that very bridge, Jang-soo pulls over and starts looting through the woman’s belongings, pocketing cash and her necklace. Then he leans into the car, grinning lecherously as he looms over the unconscious woman. Ick.

Lookout-11-00046.jpg Lookout-11-00044.jpg

Fast-forward a bit and the woman wakes up in the back of the taxi, unharmed, except now it’s Suji who’s driving the car. She drops her off at home where the girl’s father is waiting, and the young woman stumbles out of the car, glancing at the driver’s side before Suji drives off.

Suji pulls over in a remote area and opens the taxi trunk to reveal a bound and unconscious Jang-soo. She tells Kyung-soo to call the police since they can’t just let him loose to prey on someone else. Kyung-soo and Bomi are skeptical since they still haven’t found any evidence to tie him to his past crimes, but Suji has figured out that Jang-soo stole something from his first victim, Se-in.

Lookout-11-00061.jpg

Rewind to Jang-soo leaning over his unconscious fare, when Suji had shown up and knocked him out cold with a quick punch and kick. She found the necklace he took from this woman and realized that he must have also taken Se-in’s necklace (which had been missing when she died) as a souvenir, then pawned it off much later.

Kyung-soo posts a message looking for the jewelry on every social media site, and sure enough, a woman recognizes it. The next day, the news reports that a civilian came forward with a crucial piece of evidence (the necklace) and Jang-soo was once again arrested on charges of robbery and rape. As an added bonus (or problem?) the woman that Suji saved comes forward. Apparently that one glance at the driver’s side was enough for her to identity Suji and now the news has a new spin on their story: The fugitive Jo Suji rescued a girl from a released sex-offender before he could re-offend.

Do-han watches the news, thinking about Suji’s “confession†and how she wished she could see her daughter in her dreams. He looks over at his evidence wall, staring at Suji’s picture, and murmurs, “This is just the beginning. I can’t let you do what you want.†At his school, Shi-wan walks into a silent classroom and finds his desk littered with pictures of famous psychopaths. I’m not sure if this kid is capable of emotion, but he looks hurt by the photos. Se-won, Soon-ae’s daughter, watches his reaction closely.

Lookout-11-00080.jpg Lookout-11-00101.jpg

Assemblywoman CHAE HYE-SUN (Song Sun-mi) makes an appearance outside the Prosecutors’ Office, arriving amidst a sea of reporters. She addresses the cameras, coolly stating that the prosecutors owe the public a straight answer in regards to the fugitive Jo Suji, and if her claims about her daughter being murdered are true, then Chief Prosecutor Yoon has no right to become attorney general.

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

Why are there so many good shows to watch lately? Is anyone else watching so many dramas all at once that fictional worlds are starting to blur together? Every time I open up a new episode of a historical drama, I find myself having to ask, Wait, who’s the king in this one? I should probably just choose a few to binge-watch later, but sometimes it’s the fun of being in on the discussion now that keeps us watching! â€“girlfriday

javabeans

  • Lookout: This show isn’t very polished, but I’m finding a sort of rough-around-the-edges appeal to its underdog plotline. What it lacks in glossy production value, it makes up for with fast-paced missions-of-the-week, and usually delivers a satisfying payback arc for those wronged by the system. I find myself wishing the cases themselves were a little more nuanced, but at least the Lookout team itself has plenty of nuance within it, particularly with the mysterious Boss whose true agenda nobody can be sure of.

  • Lookout: I like this. It continues to be fun and capery, and stays on the light side, which makes it very easy to watch. I just want to know more about Kim Young-kwang’s two-faced prosecutor and Shin Dong-wook’s mysterious priest character so badly. They’ll get their turn, right? They’re being withholding on purpose? Well, it’s working. Hmph.

  • Lookout: I’ve barely scratched the surface with this show. After the first two half-hour episodes, I definitely knew it was one I wanted to keep on my ever-growing to-watch list. Kim Young-kwang’s character is perhaps the most interesting of all. In terms of dramaland mothers losing their children, Lee Bo-young in God’s Gift—14 Days still reigns supreme in tugging my heartstrings.

  • Lookout: Yay, I’m glad we’re getting into the cases that brought our Lookout team together, because the ones in between made my interest wane. My expectations might’ve been too high because of the promos and the first week’s episodes, but I feel like the pace is slower than I’d like even though a lot of stuff happens. I actually think the time jump sucked some of the momentum out of the story because I wanted to see the team when they first started to work together. I wish this show was also smarter. Because you have this awesome vigilante team setup, but then so many elements moving the plot forward is through coincidence and not through our characters’ maneuvering. I’m hoping that Bomi’s case will bring the tension back, though.
