Lookout races to the front of the pack with second teaser

Lookoutteaserno2-8.jpg

Oh my goodness, Lookout has way more action than I thought it would. While the first teaser was a bit melancholy, this second teaser is all about speed. Lookout is an action-thriller that follows the life of “Lookouts†in contemporary South Korea. The story is about a group of ordinary people who lost loved ones due to violent crimes. The police cannot solve their loved one’s cases, so they band together to realize their own form of justice.

The story revolves around Lee Shi-young (My Beautiful Bride), who plays Jo Su-ji, an ex-detective who is an expert shooter; her goal is to catch the criminal who killed her daughter. In this trailer Lee Shi-young is at the center of all the action as she zooms past cars on a motorcycle, jumps out of a window, and perilously hangs from a moving car. The music is hot and the sequences are quickly edited to match.

Making quick appearances are Kim Young-kwang (The Man Living in Our House) as an ambitious prosecutor, Kim Tae-hoon (Fantastic) as a righteous prosecutor, Kim Seul-gi (Second to Last Love) as an extreme recluse, and Shinee’s Key (Drinking Solo) as a genius hacker.

From the trailer this drama looks like a gripping female-led action thriller with a fleshed out supporting cast. The fast action sequences give me flashes of Healer and even the Jason Bourne series, which is never a bad thing. In addition, I am very interested in the kind of fighting sequences Lee Shi-young will perform in this drama because she won several awards as an amateur boxer and even made it onto the Korean National Olympic boxing team. She is the real deal.

Lookout is directed by PD Sohn Hyung-seok (Two WeeksShine or Go Crazy) and is the debut project of writer Kim Soo-eun, who won MBC’s open scriptwriting competition last year. It will broadcast on May 22 following Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People.

Walking off ledges and traversing cyberspace in new Lookout posters

Lookoutposter-2.jpg&key=580a19af10180bb5

We’re diving a little deeper into understanding our characters in MBC’s new action-thriller Lookout, which has released its main posters. Lookout is the story of an unlikely crew who band together after being victimized by violent crimes. This drama will show the different activities of these “lookouts†as they catch criminals whom the prosecution and police department could not or would not catch. It will also show how they heal each other on their quest to realize justice by themselves.

I love the retro first poster as it shows the motley crew and their personalities. There is the ambitious prosecutor played by Kim Young-kwang (The Man Living in Our House) exuding swagger as he looks back at his team, and Lee Shi-young (My Beautiful Bride) confidently breaking the fourth wall as she looks at us through the poster. Kim Seul-gi (Second to Last Love) has her head shyly bowed as the extreme recluse, Shinee’s Key (Drinking Solo) has his skateboard thrown over his shoulder in a devil-may-care attitude, and Kim Tae-hoon (Fantastic) looks so wholesome as the righteous prosecutor.

It would be an uplifting poster if they weren’t all about to walk off the edge of a building. And if the world is upside-down, will they fall up or down? But it kind of makes me think that they are in this until the end and will happily trade death for justice. The tagline reads “Wait for us, we are coming.†Ah, it gives me goosebumps.

Lookoutposter-1.jpg&key=e37c3d2725fe3f95

The second poster shows the juxtaposition between Lee Shi-young and Kim Young-kwang, with her standing in the cyber world and spying on Kim Young-kwang’s character. The tagline reads “Because you can’t or won’t catch them.†I am very intrigued as to the relationship between these two—I initially thought Kim Young-kwang was the antagonist of this drama, but these posters have given me pause. It looks like they are all on the same team, but it also appears that Lee Shi-young may not be able to trust Kim Young-kwang wholeheartedly.

Kim Young-kwang’s character is described as a two-faced materialistic prosecutor; however, it now appears that he is hiding his past and has been acting like an ambitious person his entire life in order to seek his revenge. The production illustrates this in the still images as they show Kim Young-kwang smiling as he butters up his superior, but his smile quickly fades, revealing his true emotions. His character is said to be the most intriguing of the drama and I must admit, I am really interested in him.

We also have a bit more information on Lee Shi-young, who is a workaholic police detective and former sharpshooter. She is a single mother, yet no matter how busy she is, she always makes time for her daughter (played by Ham Na-young). But one day, her daughter is tragically murdered and the murderer weasels out of paying for his crime. Lee Shi-young is furious and does everything she can to get justice on her own. The still cuts show Lee Shi-young with her daughter on their first shoot together. My heart weeps already!

With less than one week to go, Lookout is turning into a must-watch for me. Of all the dramas releasing next Monday (Lookout, Circle: Two Connected Worlds, and Fight My Way), Lookout was the lowest on my radar, but now it’s hopped to the top. I love a motley crew and I really want them to get justice. Plus, the dynamic between Kim Young-kwang and Lee Shi-young’s characters is pulling me in.

Lookout will broadcast on May 22 following Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People.

Premiere Watch: Circle, Fight My Way, Lookout

premiere_circle1a.jpg

Tomorrow should be a very interesting day, with three competitors launching all at the same time and doing their best to command the most eyeballs right out of the gates. Technically, only two are direct competitors since tvN’s drama airs an hour after the rest, but it’s still going to be a fight to see who garners the most interest and the biggest piece of the pie. All three new shows are quite different in genre and approach, so on the upside, we can start the week with a little variety.

Lookout

premiere_lookout1a.jpg

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: MBC
Genre: Action, thriller
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: If I had to bet, I’d call Lookout the underdog of this trio (although don’t hold me to that prediction because hey, sometimes you just can’t tell what audiences will like). It’s not because anything about the story is unappealing—it’s got underdog triumph written all over it, and vigilante justice can have a strong feel-good attraction to it.

I think the show will depend on the chemistry of the so-called Lookouts, the ordinary folks who come together to catch criminals when the system fails them, and on the upside we have a good mix of personalities: Lee Shi-young (My Beautiful Bride) as an ex-detective who loses her daughter; Kim Young-kwang (Man Living in Our House) as a cold prosecutor with a hidden agenda; Kim Tae-hoon (Fantastic) as the righteous, idealistic prosecutor; Kim Seul-gi (Second to Last Love) as a young woman who turned into a complete recluse after falling victim to a crime; and Key (Drinking Solo) as a friendly genius hacker. The group is just different enough that I can see them clashing at the start, but with conflict paving the way for a satisfying process of coming together.

I like Lee Shi-young best when she’s being badass (probably because she projects badass so strongly in her real personality), and it looks like she’s got some spiffy action scenes for us—I expect good things from the Two Weeks director! Man, did that guy know how to create heart-pounding sequences and nerve-racking cliffhangers. Dramas that focus too much on institutional corruption can get frustrating for me, but under strong direction, they can be suspenseful and dramatic. I’ll cross my fingers.
