This drama is going to be the death of me. rlytearpls.png

I really just want the four of them to be vigilantes solving crimes outside of the law, but I know it just won't happen.

I really need something to prove that DH isn't as culpable as he's saying. If they're not going that route, SJ will never forgive him and it will kill me.

Tunnel's end hurt me in the best kind of way, but I feel like I'm going to be hurt in the worst kind of way with Lookout. ã… ã… ã…

    Lookout: Episodes 25-26lookout2526-00102.jpg&key=c70879ef3f6ab6

It’s the moment of truth as Do-han faces the man who changed his life. He’s not taking any chances as he risks everything to secure the fall of his nemesis. Since his opponent always manages to survive, the question is, will Do-han’s efforts be enough, or has he sacrificed his future in vain?

EPISODE 25 RECAP

Suji watches as Shi-wan and Se-won walk out of school together. They appear friendly as they confirm plans for Se-won to visit later that afternoon and smile as they wave goodbye. Once Shi-wan is out of sight, his smile disappears. Chief Prosecutor Yoon arrives at the National Assembly for his hearing and promises the reporters that their questions will soon be answered. In his office, Do-han is on the phone and adjusts his promise of three witnesses to two. Police detectives enter to arrest him for forgery.

Just before he’s called in to his hearing, Chief Prosecutor Yoon advises someone over the phone to discover a link to Suji during interrogation to eliminate two threats. The priest watches Yoon’s hearing in his room, but is interrupted by detectives who explain that he’s needed as a witness in Do-han’s case. Chief Prosecutor Yoon’s hearing begins as he takes the candidate’s oath and promises to tell the truth.

The priest sits in interrogation with Do-han and is asked if Lee Kwan-woo is his real name. He’s warned that he could be charged as an accomplice, which Do-han considers a threat. Do-han demands proof of the allegation against him and the detectives produces some documents. Assemblywoman Chae directs a question at Chief Prosecutor Yoon: “Do you believe that the prosecution shouldn’t interfere in politics?†When he agrees, she asks about his interference in the Miseo-dong case in order to protect the ruling party.

The ruling party objects to her making an accusation without proof, so the assemblywoman calls Lawyer Oh as a witness. But then she’s given a message and glances over at a very calm Chief Prosecutor Yoon. The lead detective shows Do-han school records that list his blood type as AB, as opposed to recent records that list it as type O. Curiously, the priest’s blood type was type O before it became type AB.

Do-han laughs that school tests are unreliable and wonders why he was arrested over something so petty, suggesting that someone very powerful is behind it. The detective clarifies that his question was meant for the priest, who has refused to say anything. The detective advises the priest that his silence could work against him if the search of their belongings yields incriminating evidence. Lawyer Oh ignores his ringing phone as we see in flashback that Chief Prosecutor Yoon offered to make up for what he had done to him. Lawyer Oh asked for an end to all of the investigations aimed at him before he would discuss any compensation. As he ignores another call from the assemblywoman, Lawyer Oh smiles broadly.

A phone call informs the lead detective that a second phone was discovered in Do-han’s car. Do-han looks up at the CCTV camera in the room as the detective orders the call history. The priest finally speaks and asks the detectives to stop their investigation because he’s the real Lee Kwan-woo. Even after the detective reminds him again that he will be charged as an accomplice if he’s lying, the priest insists, “I’m telling the truth.â€

Do-han threatens a lawsuit for false arrest. The lead detective argues that if Do-han is that confident, then he should agree to a DNA test to prove his identity. Because Detective Nam requested the test earlier, Do-han’s signature can release the results, and if test shows that he’s not Lee Shin-hyuk’s son, he’ll be released right away. Do-han mutters that this is what they were after all along.

Assemblywoman Chae realizes that Chief Prosecutor Yoon somehow interfered with Lawyer Oh’s testimony. She asks her assistant about their informant, but he’s remained anonymous, so there is no way to contact him. The assemblywoman notes that instead of having three witnesses, she now risks a charge of false accusation. Do-han and the priest look anxious as the lead detective reviews the DNA report. But then, he announces that Do-han is not related to Lee Shin-hyuk. Do-han stands to leave, but the detective detains them until Do-han’s second phone can be investigated and promises to arrest him if it turns out to be a burner phone (untraceable, illegal).

Chief Prosecutor Yoon testifies that he’s never gone against his principles as a prosecutor. Assemblywoman Chae is given another message, and this time she announces a witness who can challenge his claim. And then Do-han enters the hearing.

In a flashback to nine hours before the hearing, we see Do-han visit the team’s hideout to ask for help. Kyung-soo and Bomi had monitored Do-han’s interrogation once the hearing was underway. From her car, Suji encouraged them to hurry while Yoon took his oath, which coincided with the discovery of Do-han’s second phone.

As an investigation was ordered on the phone’s call history, Do-han had looked up at the camera, knowing his teammates were watching. Before the hearing, he’d asked Kyung-soo and Bomi to hack the camera in the interrogation room to keep an eye on him. During Do-han’s interrogation, Kyung-soo changed the numbers in the call history to local takeout restaurants (as if Do-han would frequent such places!). As far as the DNA report, Do-han anticipated that it would be used to prove his true identity. While Kyung-soo and Bomi monitored Do-han’s interrogation, Suji had headed for the NFS (National Forensic Service) to switch the DNA report.

So now, Bomi and Kyung-soo use CCTV cameras to watch detectives chase down the takeout restaurants listed on Do-han’s call history. The detectives hand out flyers with photos of Suji and Bomi and one ends up in the hands of the realtor that Kyung-soo met with that morning. Bomi and Kyung-soo witness her exchange with the detectives and realize that she has the hideout’s address. Kyung-soo regrets that he used the numbers of neighborhood restaurants as the realtor leads the detectives to her office. Bomi and Kyung-soo work fast to move their suspicious hardware to a secret room.

Suji wears a mask as she makes her way to the DNA lab at the NFS. With the employees out for a break, she manages to switch the envelope that contains the real report with a different one. Checking CCTV footage on her phone, Suji can see when a detective arrives in the parking lot and is ready to meet him, dressed in a lab coat, to hand over fake report.

Bomi monitors the detectives from her phone as Kyung-soo encourages her not to worry. He uses a large valve to close off the room and then alters Bomi’s photo on his phone just at the police walk in.

Kyung-soo protests that his detective agency uses strictly legal means to help their clients, and acts offended when a detective suggests that his girlfriend is a fugitive. That detective checks Kyung-soo’s ID as Bomi listens from behind the wall. Kyung-soo concedes that his girlfriend does look similar to the fugitive, but shows the altered photo to prove how they’re not the same, declaring his girlfriend prettier.

Kyung-soo takes his charade a bit too far when he glances in the direction of the secret room while he inquires about the reward for Suji and Bomi. The detectives decide to check the agency more closely and become suspicious about the wall that closes off the secret room. Bomi grabs a walkie-talkie and moves away as the lead detective throws himself against the wall and tries to find a way to open it.

The detective is about to turn the valve that opens the room when we cut over to the police interrogation room, just as the DNA report is delivered. While Do-han remains detained until his second phone has been investigated, Suji reads the real DNA report in her car.

  • "I NEED A LIGHT" LYRICS

My [once] untainted heart was disturbed,
it was shattered and broken into pieces.
I can't breathe anymore.

As if it was a one night's dream, [the memory] is fading away.
I can't get out of this terrifying mire-like place.
Please get me out of this unbearable anguish!

I Need A Light...  I Need A Light
[To get out of] dried-up illusions and cold tremblings
Imbue me with colors again.
I Need A Light... I Need A Light
[To get out of] impoverished feelings and hollow moments
Allow me to breathe again

I've been waiting for you in my dark, secluded room's corner
My [once] withering and twisted mind
No longer hurts me

I guess this frozen heart has finally settled down.
I can't get out of this terrifying mire-like place.
Please get me out of this unbearable pain!

I Need A Light...  I Need A Light
[To get out of] dried-up illusions and cold tremblings
Imbue me with colors again.
I Need A Light... I Need A Light
[To get out of] impoverished feelings and hollow moments
Allow me to breathe again

I cannot run away anymore.

I Need A Light... I Need A Light
[To get out of] memories of losing my way and memories of resignation
Imbue me with colors again.
I Need A Light... I Need A Light
[To get out of] sorrowful  longings and dreary loneliness.
Allow me to breathe again.

Shin Dong-wook: “I’m joyful every moment at being able to act againâ€

ShinDongWookinterview1.jpg&key=b4ee81074

Each time he appears, he’s shrouded in mystery. He knows the truth, but he is silent. Shin Dong-wook (Wish Upon a StarSoulmate) plays the stoic priest Lee Kwan-woo in MBC’s Monday-Tuesday drama Lookout. The drama marks Shin’s return to television after seven long years, and his comeback has been both tense and thrilling.

(Warning: This post is rife with spoilers for Lookout. Although with this show, it’s possible the spoilers aren’t spoilers so much as red herrings.)

Shin suffers from a rare disease, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, that has no discernible cause. He’s been receiving treatment for the syndrome since his diagnosis in 2011, and thankfully, his condition has improved to the point that he’s been able to dip his toes into drama waters again.

He chose for his first comeback project Lookout, which is about people who have lost their loved ones to criminals and corruption and whose lives have been shattered to pieces. In the show, victims band together to overcome their pain and to fight for justice, and Shin’s participation has intensified the drama’s edge. Is it because we’ve waited so long for his return? Or because his priestly garments suit him so well? Or maybe it’s his exacting performance in collaboration with Lee Shi-young, Kim Young-kwang, Kim Tae-hoon and the rest of the ensemble? Maybe it’s a combination of all three.

ShinDongWookinterview2.jpg

Shin sat down with reporters recently to answer questions about his Lookoutcharacter and what it’s like to act again.

Q: It’s been seven years since 2010’s Wish Upon a Star. How does it feel to be on set again?

A: I still have to take medicine but my health has gotten much better. I’m joyful every moment because I’m able to act again. Since the director is so talented and the staff is so kind, I’m not experiencing any difficulty and I am having a great time filming. Only, I play a character that quietly disappears whenever I want to try to do something, which means I’m not on set for very long, and that makes me a bit wistful.

Q: You made viewers curious and confused in many ways: You were a mysterious priest with an unknown connection to Kim Young-kwang, and you were thought to be the leader of the Lookout gang.

A: The director asked me to maintain an aura of mystery. I knew heading into the drama that I was the stepbrother of Kim Young-kwang’s character. In analyzing my character, I wrote about 30 pages of copy. In the beginning I acted with the intent to convince viewers that I was the head of the lookouts, so if I confused viewers, then I somewhat succeeded.

Q: How did you digest the character of Lee Kwan-woo? How did he become a priest, and how did you imagine his stepbrother became a prosecutor?

A: In the drama, Kim Young-kwang’s father chokes my mother to death. As a result of the murder, one person dreams of revenge and lives with the purpose of slowly carrying that plan out. In high school, [my character] Lee Kwan-woo went through a terribly rebellious stage but happened to meet a priest who set me on the path to priesthood. One person became the incarnation of revenge while the other overcame his dark past through faith. I had these thoughts as I was digesting and trying to imagine Lee Kwan-woo’s past.

Q: There have been many comments that priest’s robes suit you.

A: Priest robes are actually very warm. It was to the point where I actually joked to the stylist, could you make a linen version? The fabric isn’t breathable. I asked a priest how the robes should fit and he said that priests have the freedom to choose a fit that’s to their liking. Except most priests are thin when they are young, and as they grow older they put on weight. Since they plan on wearing these garments their whole lives, they order them big, he told me. Since there weren’t any regulations regarding the fit, we had them made to fit my frame.

Q: We heard that you sought out a real priest and studied him [in preparation for the role].

A: Yes, I blindly sought out a Catholic church in the vicinity of where I live. After I sought it out, I learned how to preside over Mass and how to act, how to position my body, the type of accent to use—I learned them all one by one. The priest there even recommended a book, so I read it. Thankfully I am also of the Catholic faith, so it wasn’t difficult to learn.

Q: In the drama, you mostly work with male actors, like Kim Young-kwang and Kim Tae-hoon.

A: I have many scenes in which I engage with Young-kwang-shi, and I sense his intense passion for acting. And Tae-hoon hyung is too kind. He’s really incredibly kind and he tells me very wise things. He discovers and tells me positive things about myself that I had never been aware of.

Q: How do you think Lookout will end? Do you think Lee Kwan-woo will be able to return to living as Jang Do-han?

A: I’m curious too. About the next script. Please look forward to it.

Q: Lastly, please say a few words to the drama’s fans and your fans.

A: It’s been a long time; thank you for having interest in the show. On set, the staff and director are working incredibly hard and I hope the strength from the set translates into a good project worthy of your love. I’m deeply thankful for the production staff who run around on set sweating, and for the viewers.

  • Lookout: Episodes 27-28 Lookout-27-00464.jpg&key=0bfe67b150c7c90

Get ready for some sucker punches and big reveals as Lookout takes us on one heck of a rollercoaster ride. I can’t believe we’re already at the penultimate week — I’m so nervous about what’s going to happen that I can’t even think about what I’ll do when it’s over. We’ve finally made it to the big showdown that everyone has been waiting for, but, like most things in life, it doesn’t really play out as smoothly as we’d hoped.

EPISODE 27 RECAP

At the attorney general hearing, Do-han swears in as a witness against Chief Prosecutor Yoon. Assemblywoman Chae starts off the questions by asking Do-han why he’s testifying when it could have a negative effect on his career. He responds that he has broken the law on Yoon’s orders, and can no longer go against his conscience.

Assemblywoman Chae asks Do-han to elaborate, and he states that Yoon manipulated the cases regarding Bomi’s family, Kyung-soo’s mother, and Yoo-na’s death. Do-han explains that for the first case (Bomi’s family’s murder), in the interest of supporting a presidential candidate, Yoon had allowed the suspect — a US soldier — to leave the country so as to prevent an international alteration.

Lookout-27-00041.jpg&key=50f2edb89aa9aed Lookout-27-00042.jpg&key=cfd0384d02d64c8

Yoon’s defense is in disbelief at the accusation that Yoon would manipulate the law for political reasons, and so they call in their own witness: Lawyer Oh. Do-han’s former boss enters to take his seat on the defense side and, after a loaded glance at a glaring Do-han, Lawyer Oh testifies, “What he said is not the truth.†Amidst the rising murmurs from spectators, Oh waxes poetic about Yoon’s unfailing dedication to the law, and claims responsibility for failing to catch the culprit in Bomi’s family’s case. He even has the nerve to “apologize†to the victim’s family. At Lookout HQ, Bomi barely contains her rage as she yells that that wasn’t a real apology. Sensing a dead end, Assemblywoman Chae switches tactics and asks Do-han about his affiliation with Detective Nam. He replies that Yoon had ordered the detective to kill the fugitive Jo Suji instead of arresting her. Do-han claims to have been a part of it, and states that Suji was a hindrance to Yoon’s career as she kept bringing up his old cases.

This causes quite a stir, but when Yoon’s defense requests proof supporting this statement, Do-han has to admit that the only proof he has is his word and memory. Even Assemblywoman Chae cringes a bit at that, and the defense yells at Do-han for baseless accusations. Do-han argues that everything to do with Yoon always ends without evidence, thanks to people like Detective Nam, who clean up his messes. He brings up how Nam murdered Lee Eun-ja, Kyung-soo’s mom, on Yoon’s orders, and when Detective Nam was caught disposing of the woman’s body, Yoon strong-armed Nam into suicide by threatening the detective’s family. Yoon speaks up to calmly insist that Detective Nam was nothing but a corrupt police officer and that he had only ever advised Nam to follow the law. Yoon claims that he’s “heartbroken†over the detective’s death, but agrees that his misdeeds still need to be investigated. As Yoon testifies, we see Soon-ae watching the broadcast from a hospital room. In the hospital bed behind her is a prone figure also watching the television, but we can’t see who it is.

Back in the hearing, the judge reminds both Do-han and Yoon that they can be charged with perjury for lying, but both stick to their opposing statements, each claiming that they’re telling the truth. Assemblywoman Chae then leads Do-han into the subject of Yoo-na’s case, and Do-han states that her death was not an accident. He says that Yoon’s son, Yoon Shi-wan, murdered Suji’s daughter, then the chief prosecutor ordered Do-han to cover it up. Yoon jumps in to counter that the case did not have enough evidence, and chastises both Do-han and Assemblywoman Chae for bringing up a minor’s name in a public hearing.

Yoon addresses the entire assembly to swear that he never used his power for his own gain, and has always stayed faithful to “this nation and its people.†As he speaks, we see flashbacks of Do-han’s father’s torture and Yoon interrogating Kyung-soo’s mother, belying his virtuous assertions.

Lookout-27-00127.jpg&key=1a6ab1590ae0b49 Lookout-27-00131.jpg&key=6022dabc5e9f95f

It’s a pretty speech and the assembly is moved, until Do-han breaks the silence to say, “May 5th, 2016. Yoon Shi-wan took Detective Jo’s daughter, Jo Yoo-na to a rooftop, and I witnessed the incident with my own eyes.†His announcement is met with shock, and the Lookout team stares at the TV.

Yoon’s defense demand to know if this means he is admitting to aiding and abetting a murder. With a dead look in his eyes, Do-han concedes, “Yes. I could have stopped Yoon Shi-wan from committing a murder. I could have stopped Jo Yoo-na from dying. However, I did not do that.†Wide-eyed, Suji gazes at the TV in shock.
