  • Lookout: Episodes 17-18

Lookout17-18-00638.jpg

Lookout promises to keep us riveted as the team edges ever closer to exposing the corruption that plagues both the police force and the prosecutor’s office. There’s no room for mistakes, so of course that means that we can’t just sit back and enjoy the ride. Get ready, the journey to justice is about to get very bumpy.

EPISODE 17 RECAP

Do-han drives his car through traffic and gets the feeling that he’s being followed. He’s right, because Suji has his car in sight while Kyung-soo and Bomi run a search on his background. When Do-han stops at a high end store, Suji parks on the street to keep an eye on him.

Kyung-soo unearths that Do-han’s mother died when he was in high school, killed by her common-law husband. Suji asks Kyung-soo if Chief Prosecutor Yoon was connected to the case, but he finds nothing. Suji watches as Do-han walks out of the store, convinced that his reason for revenge against Yoon is well hidden.

Lookout17-18-00051.jpg

After Suji drives away, Do-han steps out of a driveway. Now that he knows who’s been following him, Do-han recalls the priest’s phone call about Suji’s request to meet him. The priest wanted to take her into their confidence, but Do-han protested because they just managed to produce a witness. When the priest asked Do-han about the other person, Do-han answered that he found a clue. The priest sensed his lead was connected to the detective who tortured Do-han’s father, a man only known to them by his nickname.

When Suji stops at a light, she sees a televised news broadcast in a storefront that reports on her being shot and still at large. Eun-joong sits at his desk, puzzled over the video chip with evidence that Do-han helped Suji when she was injured, when he gets a call from Soon-ae.

Lookout17-18-00093.jpg

Soon-ae and Eun-joong watch over Suji’s mother, who’s resting up after having collapsed. When Mom wakes up, Soon-ae guesses she collapsed in shock after hearing of Suji’s shooting, and asks why Mom believed the news instead of calling her. Mom answers that she couldn’t turn to the police who shot her daughter, but she perks up when Soon-ae lies that Suji didn’t get hit by the bullet and is fine.

Soon-ae gets a call and steps out of the room. It’s from Suji, and Soon-ae asks about her injury, relieved that she’s all right. Soon-ae says that Detective Nam claimed that Suji broke out of the handcuffs and attacked him, but Suji just warns her to keep an eye on him. Suji asks after her mother and Soon-ae insists that she’s fine, tough like her daughter.

Although Soon-ae takes care to speak quietly and away from the room, Eun-joong catches a glimpse through the cracked doorway and overhears as Soon-ae urges Suji to take care of herself until she catches her.

Lookout17-18-00173.jpg Lookout17-18-00172.jpg

Do-han approaches Detective Nam and proposes that they share information. Detective Nam isn’t interested, but Do-han persists and asks if he’s been at work behind the scenes all along. We see in flashback that Detective Nam was the one who slipped Woo-sung notes while in custody and helped him escape.

Do-han tries to determine how long the detective has worked for the chief prosecutor, but Detective Nam ignores the question. Instead, he wonders pointedly how a badly injured Suji could have escaped, asking if Do-han knows the answer since he was the last person to see her before she disappeared. Detective Nam faults himself for her escape because he allowed Do-han to interfere.

Lookout17-18-00190.jpg

They return to the joint team headquarters for a meeting. Soon-ae confirms that Bomi lived at the apartment where Suji was arrested and Do-han suggests that she was the one who helped Suji to escape. Prosecutor Park reminds the team that there’s another person in the mix, the one who sent the photos to her apartment.

Eun-joong stares at Do-han closely as they hear that the courier never met the sender of the envelopes and picked them up from spots without cameras. Prosecutor Park orders the team to make Bomi’s wanted status public and discover how she met Suji.

Do-han approaches Eun-joong and asks the reason for his laser eyes. Eun-joong admits that he has lots of questions but can’t depend on Do-han to give him real answers. He’s determined to find out those answers wants on his own.

Lookout17-18-00246.jpg Lookout17-18-00247.jpg

Kyung-soo and Bomi are adorably awkward as they set up a monitor in the hideout. After their hands touch and Bomi pulls away, she agrees to let Kyung-soo finish the job. Bomi reaches for a can that she mistakes for food, surprised to see that it contains a pair of men’s underwear. She throws them at Kyung-soo, flustered, and her eyes betray her. Ha!

  • Lookout: Episodes 19-20

Lookout-19-00302-1-1.jpg

Lookout seems to delight in keeping me on the razor’s edge of panic. Don’t get me wrong, I love a little suspense as much as the next drama addict, but this is getting ridiculous. It seems like Do-han has everyone out to get him, with his crew doubting him, allies making other plans, and his mortal enemy circling closer to a truth that could destroy everything. I swear I’m going to have white hair by the end of this show.

EPISODE 19 RECAP

Lookout-19-00042.jpg Lookout-19-00039.jpg

Do-han and the priest both arrive at the church. Each thinks the other messaged them to meet, until Suji strolls down the aisle to reveal that shecalled them. She shows them the paper that she took from Do-han’s apartment and matches it with the paper that their boss sent messages with, proving that he is their team’s elusive leader.

The priest mutters that they never should have gotten her involved, but Do-han maintains his smarmy façade, claiming that she could have planted the paper there. Suji smiles and warns that he can’t talk his way out of this one. With the priest and prosecutor watching, Suji phones up Jin-ki on the Joint Investigation Team. Do-han looks distinctly uneasy as Suji says she’s turning herself in, instructing Soon-ae to come pick her up once they’ve traced her location.

Lookout-19-00064.jpg

Suji hangs up, and Do-han grits out that if she’s caught, it’s game over for her. Suji fires right back that if she is caught, then it’s over for him, too.

Do-han smirks as he says that she’s bluffing, at least until Soon-ae calls him to report that Suji just turned herself in, confirming that Suji’s call was real. As Do-han glares, Suji demands that he tell her all his plans before the police arrive.

With no other option, Do-han drops the act and admits that there’s someone he’s after, just like the rest of them. Suji argues that he’s been using them for his own plans, but Do-han reasons back that he provided the information they needed; she and the others pursued revenge for themselves, not for him.

Lookout-19-00127.jpg Lookout-19-00119.jpg

Suji cuts through Do-han’s smooth logic and says accusatorially, “Why did you use Yoo-na for this?†The priest shifts guiltily, but Do-han snarls that if he hadn’t intervened on that case, then Chief Prosecutor Yoon would have just used someone else to cover it up.

With fire burning in her eyes, Suji yells that that doesn’t justify using her daughter’s death as an opportunity for his revenge. She cries, “You are no different from Yoon Seung-ro. You crush someone’s life so that you can achieve your goal, and you don’t even realize that it’s wrong.â€

Lookout-19-00199.jpg

Do-han trembles with rage at being compared to his enemy, but they’re interrupted by Bomi and Kyung-soo bursting in through the side doors. Suji wipes away her tears as she tosses a recorder to Kyung-soo, asking if he got everything. Oh, snap!

As Soon-ae and her crew race to Suji’s location, she calls Eun-joong to fill him in. He asks if they’ve called Do-han yet, and gets suspicious when Soon-ae says she’s been unable to reach him after he hung up on her.

Well and truly cornered by his own people back in the church, Do-han asks what they want. Kyung-soo demands the intel on his mother’s case, and Bomi asks for his plan for catching Yoon. Do-han agrees, but he suggests that they relocate before the police arrive. Strangely, Suji assures him that they have lots of time.

Lookout-19-00206.jpg Lookout-19-00208.jpg

The police speed to the traced location of Suji’s call… only to find an empty street. Soon-ae uncovers a burner phone, and Detective Nam snarks that Suji is just toying with them. Eun-joong runs up asks if Soon-ae has heard from Do-han yet, saying he has a feeling that he’s with Suji right now. Uh oh.

Said Do-han is currently chuckling as he works out how his team fooled him. We rewind to see that when Suji made the call to the police, she’d actually called Bomi. Kyung-soo had then used a burner phone to call the real detectives, and he and Bomi had held their phones together, patching Suji through to Jin-ki. After the call, they’d abandoned the burner and cutely ran off, high-fiving each other in the process.

Returning to the present, Do-han answers Eun-joong’s call and fibs that he’s on his way back to the police station, adding that he knew they’d never catch Suji. Suddenly, the sound of approaching sirens fills the church and Bomi checks her surveillance feed, displaying the incoming cops. Grimacing now, Do-han asks Eun-joong where he is. The prosecutor answers, “I’m on my way to catch Suji.â€

Lookout-19-00228-1.jpg

Do-han hangs up, glowering at Suji. To stall for time, the priest meets the detectives and tells Soon-ae that the church is empty. Unfortunately, Eun-joong (who is being entirely too clever) remembers seeing the priest with Do-han and instructs the police to search inside. The detectives burst in, but Team Lookout has already vacated the church, so Eun-joong tells the cops to look for Do-han’s car.

Outside, Do-han and Suji are sneaking through the shadows when Detective Nam, Eun-joong, and some officers pass nearby. The two duck behind hedges, trapped mere feet away from the police party until another group of detectives call out. The cops and prosecutor race off, and Do-han and Suji resume their creeping.

lookout20-00032.jpg lookout20-00035.jpg

Oh no! Bomi and Kyung-soo are holding hands and sprinting away when they’re caught by a group of detectives. In a heart-wrenching struggle, Kyung-soo and Bomi desperately try to hold on to each other, but the detectives rip them apart. Kyung-soo manages to break free and shouts for Bomi, but she yells at him to run, grabbing on to a detective to keep him from giving chase. Left with no option, Kyung-soo runs away, and Soon-ae arrives to arrest Bomi for harboring a fugitive (Suji). As the detectives walk Bomi back, she spies a surveillance camera and immediately fakes a panic attack, crouching down and gasping while staring right at the camera.

Hiding in a bathroom, Kyung-soo watches Bomi through the hacked surveillance camera and gets an idea. Using the church’s speakers, he broadcasts the sound of gunshots. The cops run after the sound, leaving only one detective to hold the “asthmatic†Bomi.

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching??

javabeans

  • Lookout: I initially expected our Lookouts to be a team of damaged people who would unite in purpose and become a heartwarming surrogate family. That’s sort of true for our core three teammates, but I find it unexpectedly satisfying to see the tension between them and the Boss, and how they aren’t automatically on the same page even if they’ve been working together all this time. The grudging teamwork keeps things tense, in a good way.

  • Lookout: The backstory I’ve been waiting for finally came this week, and I was not disappointed. It only made me more curious about the prosecutor and the priest, whose broken bromance makes me instantly more invested in their story. Now that the Avengers have finally assembled (in their hostile, double-crossing way), I hope to really dig into everyone’s pasts and watch them turn into a little family of their own.

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Lookout" Episodes 7 and 8

photo861048.jpg

"Lookout" is barreling forward with Soo-jin at the lead. This grieving mother is brave, intelligent, and determined to bring her daughter's killer to justice. Her independence throws a wrench in the plans of Do-han and keeps everyone else on their toes. It's hard not to love such a driven heroine who keeps us guessing at how she will escape each new situation.

The focus of this pair of episodes is the search for Woo-sung, the man whose case incited cover ups and began Soo-jin's involvement with Chief Prosecutor Yoon and Chief Oh. Woo-sung is a lowlife, having taken the life of a man and then living free while an innocent young man took the fall for his crime. It is only Soo-jin's dogged hunt for him that brings him back to prison after Yoon releases him. In general, it is the chase and capture of Woo-sung that drives the episode, shows off how amazing Lee Si-young is at being a badass woman, and allows for Team Justice (Soo-jin,

Bo-mi, and Kyeong-soo) to really get to know each other and reveal some of their stories to us. Mostly it is Bo-mi, the closeted woman who monitors the CCTV feeds of the city, who reveals herself to us. A cranky nay-sayer and the primary person who thinks Soo-jin should strickly follow their Leader's orders, Bo-mi has a trauma that keeps her shut up 100% of the time. She alludes to it when she decides to go against their Leader's orders and help Soo-jin find and apprehend Woo-sung, who kidnapped his daughter to get revenge on his ex-wife. She mentions not wanting any other children to live in fear. Both she and Kyeong-soo have backstories that I want to unearth.

photo861049.jpgphoto861052.jpg

The events of this episode are those of the very first scene with Soo-jin chasing Woo-sung and I do very much appreciate the show coming full circle and then spinning us into new territory. We now clearly see Do-han's involvement, both as his coverup as a smarmy, ladder-climbing prosecutor, and as the leader of a secret group that he uses for punishing the corrupt people protected by money and power. While he's a fascinating character to watch (and I'm sure for Kim Young-kwang to play), he is not very likable. I hope this changes soon because a anti-hero one understands but does not empathize with is not going to stay in the good graces of the viewership for long. For now, Do-han is interesting because of his dual role and because of how brilliant and flexible he is, playing both roles with extreme dexterity.

Another solid aspect of the show is the corrupt prosecutors played by Choi Moo-sung and Kim Sang-ho. These men usually don't fill roles quite like these. Choi is chilling as the ruthless Chief Prosecutor Yoon, a role much different than his usual kindly father figure. I'm glad to see such a talented man make use of his wide variety of acting skills. The same is true for Kim as Chief Oh, whose nervousness and supplicating behavior takes finesse to execute convincingly. Kim Sang-ho and Kim Young-kwang have remarkable chemistry that makes Do-han's manipulation of Chief Oh much more real and grounded.

photo861050.jpgphoto861051.jpg

But in the end, the story is about Soo-jin and the emtpiness she feels at the loss of her daughter. She goes on eating and sleeping each day despite her loss and grief. Will she be able to capture Yoon and his sociopath son Si-wan?

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Lookout" Episodes 9-10

photo861148.jpg

Do-han has a lot to take care of in this pair of episodes of "Lookout". Soo-ji's headstrong influence is powerful enough to convince even the skeptical Bo-mi that what's right needs to be done. This pits our justice fighters directly against Chief Prosecutor Yoon who is wily enough to be a worthy opponent.

Do-han manipulated Chief Oh who is discarded by Chief Prosecutor Yoon with very little fanfare. Yoon covered up all of Oh's wrongdoing, a show of his power. Now Do-han is taken in by Yoon who believes Do-han's vows of loyalty. This new role has Do-han working hard to maintain his smarmy persona as well as his role as Leader. Until now, we've understood his motivations, but he's been hard to like. But when we see him tearfully empathize with Soo-jin in secret, he becomes a human; a very, very fallible human. My hope is that he will reveal himself to the justice fighters and that they will all actively work together. It would be good for him to have people on which he can rely.

photo861152.jpgphoto861150.jpg

Those people, the justice fighters as I call them, are starting to stray from their leader's desires. Although explicitly told not to stray from his orders, they do so anyway in order to protect another potential sexual assault victim. This is an especially important moment for Bo-mi who, until now, followed orders strictly in order to take revenge for the tragedy of her past. From what I can gather, her happy family was murdered and that was the cause of her trauma and inability to leave her apartment. Kyeong-soo's past was also revealed in part; he had been in jail, presumably for cyber related crimes. He has yet to be focused on as something more than a cheerful hacking genius.

The events of the episode cause Soo-jin to further doubt Leader as he was indubitably the person who blew their cover. Bo-mi and Kyeong-soo aren't quite as sure as Leader warned them of the police raid. The entire situation is tightly put together as we, the omniscient audience, see what the characters cannot. Soo-jin is the most savvy of the three and realizes that the priest she's run into several times has a role to play as well as the fact that Leader has to be a prosecutor or someone similar. While she is dead set on revealing his identity, Kyeong-soo and Bo-mi seem less curious and more trusting in spite of everything that has happened.

photo861151.jpgphoto861149.jpg

Si-wan had a moment on screen after not much airtime during the moment he realizes that a classmate is police team lead Soon-ae's daughter. This can't be good news for Soon-ae who is currently working with the recently transferred Eun-joong to catch Soo-ji. Even Si-wan's mother knows that he is off. It's revealed that she saw him smirk at Soo-ji's pain when he was being questioned about Yu-na's death. Perhaps this mother will break the case or perhaps not. Her duties to family may continue to overwhelm her duties to justice.

Until the next exciting episode!
