I've been considering quitting college for some time now... been feeling discouraged

For the last 2 semesters I have just left so miserable and I honestly stopped carrying about my education. I pass the classes but with Cs because I just don't care anymore. I don't put in the effort as much as I used to do it.

I'm not sure what it is, if its exhaustion from trying to managed school and work, or whether I'm just physically and mentally drained from all the stress and anxiety from work. I work up approx. 50 hours a week and my only days off are Mondays & Wednesdays; they're also the only days where I can actually go to class.

In order to graduate with a BA I need 120 credits. So far I have 64. I registered for the fall semester already and I am taking 5 classes and I'll be in school from 7am till 7pm with a 5 hour break. Thankfully the commute from campus to my apartment is only like 25 minutes by train.

I'm pretty sure that something has changed and shifted within me. When I was in a community college I actually cared about my grades and what classes I took but now since I transfers to a 4 year institution I really stopped giving a fuck about everything. Maybe its the placed I transferred to that has me so discouraged, for the past 2 semesters I have been taking classes that I don't even need because of how quickly everything closes and the department refuses to open more seats in the classes or they simply do not offer the course that is required in order to graduate. I basically took whatever was available and fit into my schedule.

This upcoming semester I will be taking 3 of my major classes because I was able to register the same day that registration was opened. So perhaps that will change my outlook on the future.

But idk, there's this je ne sais quoi and I can't really put my finger on it and describe what exactly it is that has me feeling so down and on a verge of quitting.

Any tips or advice?

I think if you need to take time off from college you should, and there's nothing wrong with that. You can always go back later and people do it all the time. It's pointless to go on doing something if you have no motivation for it, because then you'll end up stuck. I've been in your situation.

I know it's really hard for you rn but I always think about my parents. They work so hard to provide the money enough to pay for my ridiculous tuition and I go right back to studying. Stick it out just for a while & be optimistic about your future even if you feel like it's hopeless. I hope you feel better!! <3

I think I can relate to you because I was like, the most hard working student you ever met in high school. My motivation for studying soon started declining in my late high school year. Now I am in my second year of university and my motivation to study and do well is at 0 and I have been barely passing my semester 1 classes so I know Im in a very bad situation right now, but I still have no motivation to. It sucks but Im just gonna try my best until I graduate.

I think it may be because you have 0 interest in the course you have chosen. Maybe if you think and plan about the future you may have more motivation. For example think about the degree: once you graduate you will get to go into the job you've been wanting to, or you can even take some time off to travel the world a bit - whatever works for you. Once you think about what you want to do you will at least gain some motivation from this.

I think its hard to say what to do in your situation because its so personal, but you may have lost your way in life and just need some sense in direction. Maybe talk to a very close friend (or girl/boyfriend) or even the college psychologist.

That's definitely a tough situation and I'm sorry you're going through this. The best advice I can give now is to maybe stick around for those 3 major classes you managed to register for and see if you start feeling different after some time. You should try to figure out the reason why you're feeling this way, start writing down your thoughts and analyzing them maybe? See what kind of situations and things at your current college affect you negatively. Then you can start working through or around them.

Even if you decide to quit in the end you can always go back later, so just know that your options are always open no matter what you do now. If you need the time off, take it. If during that time you realize that college just isn't for you for now (or ever, if it comes down to that), there's no shame in that.

This is exactly what I'm missing. I had motivation, drive and passion before but somehow it got extinguished.

I would advice to stop being a cunt online hoplz.png maybe then things will light up for you

I'm still the straw that stirs the drink

You should talk to you school counselor, your psycharist, and your family.

This may or may not change your outlook, but you should try to get all the support you need for your decision regardless if you quit college or not.

I'm not someone who opens up easily to strangers. I think that emotions are for ugly people and I do have a cold, heartless exterior and I often do come off as someone who doesn't show sympathy or empathy but that's just how I am. I'm not the person who will cry on someone's  shoulder and talk to them about my problems. That's just not me. That being said when someone pushes my buttons and crosses my boundaries then all bets are off I will explode and it can get and it often does get very ugly and very personal

My situation is different than yours I do not rely on my parents to pay my tuition. I am able to afford and pay it myself.

There's nothing wrong with quitting college, but my suggestion for you is to have a back-up plan if you really don't want to go anymore.

I was in the same position two years ago and I headed to the Navy. After I was separated a year later, I decided to go back to college and i'm liking it right now.

Just make sure you talk to someone, like a family member about it first before doing so, so you know you have support

Sounds like you're burning yourself out.  Could you go down to a part-time class load?  Like stick with just the 3 major classes for next semester? That way you're still working towards your goal, but not killing yourself doing so?

I dropped out of my schooling because i got depressed and i really regret it.  I wish i would have stuck it out honestly, or lightened my load and kept going.  Now i have mountains of debt and no degree unsure.png

I don't recommend quitting unless you have a proper back up plan, of what you want to do.

Try to confide with someone you trust, and see how you can organise your time better. Yes, studying can be very tough, but it will help you in the long term if you finish, rather than quit.

Stick it out, but seek help.

I hated everything about high school everything! It was like a horror story for me. I came to USA in my early teen years so it was a massive change for me and I had some major personal and family problems that sort of distracted me from everything. I was and still am the only person who speaks English in my family. Soon after I came in both of my parents ended up in hospitals with life threatening illnesses. My dad had 2 heart attacks and my mother had an ulcer that exploded and the acid from her stomach was eating other organs and tissues around it. I was running around the city from hospital to hospital checking on my parents, consulting with the doctors and I was just mentally unprepared for something like that. I never could have imagined something like that even happening in the 1st place. Soon after I became extremely extremely depressed then I had major insomnia. Long story short I did not finish HS, I got my GED instead and went straight to work. Works in different places until deciding to go back to college at the age of 23. As I mentioned community college was perfectly fine I had the passion, motivation and drive but now I have none of them.

Those random classes are probably the reason why I've been feeling so down lately. I mean they're just a downer and I could give 2 shits less about them. The best thing for me to do is to probably take a semester or 2 off after fall semester and re-evaluate everything because I just need some clarity.

Perhaps you should consider quitting studying for now and drop out. You can always head back to study in the future.

I was like you in the past and that what I did. Did it affect me in seeking a job? I still managed to get a job in the industry I want to be.

But in the end it is up to you. You yourself need to decide the advantages and disadvantage if you decided to quit schooling.
