(CNN)A US aircraft carrier-led strike group is headed toward the Western Pacific Ocean near the Korean Peninsula, a US defense official confirmed to CNN.

Adm. Harry Harris, the commander of U.S. Pacific Command, directed the USS Carl Vinson strike group to sail north to the Western Pacific after departing Singapore on Saturday, Pacific Command announced.

 

The move of the Vinson strike group is in response to recent North Korean provocations, the official said.

It is not uncommon for aircraft carriers to operate in that area, and the United States regularly deploys military assets, such as aircraft, to the region as a show of force. In fact, the Vinson was in South Korea last month for military exercises.

Earlier this week, North Korea launched a Scud extended-range missile, which US officials said exploded in flight. The regime also has recently conducted several missile engine tests as it works to improve its ballistic missile technology.

The Vinson strike group will operate in the Western Pacific rather than executing previously planned port visits to Australia, Pacific Command said. The group will remain under the operational control of the Third Fleet.

Reuters first reported the move of the group.

This is a trick to try to scare them. CNN's use of the word "strike" in their seems like this is a declaration of war, but it's really not. I've said this before but don't just immediately assume "WW3 IT'S WW3 WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE" about everything. If this were an action with intent to wage war or seriously attack North Korea, we wouldn't know anything about the ship's movements, they would be top secret.

North Korea has some anniversaries coming up. They are definitely testing nuclear weapon/missiles this month. The army is also holding a military parade on the 25th. Perfect time to strike North Korea if you ask me even though no country has ever attacked another country while that country is holding a military parade. I guess it's a bitch move.

I just wanna inform OHers that the era of the aircraft carriers is ending - just like the era of the battleships was ending by WWII.

 

Not over yet, but will be soon.

 

But anyways, the US has carriers around there all the time so this is just another one of those.

Carrier is a threat to small middle country. Plane of one carrier equal to  a whole fighter aircraft unit of such country. Country like NK, don't have well equipped airforce.

(Carriers have become too big and too slow, because they have stayed the same for decades whereas mssiles have advanced a lot. Easy targets)

long ass range missiles can be intercepted and destroyed, it's not the perfect solution smile.png 

In order to lower the risk of interception, these missiles must be launched as near of the target as possible in order to accomplish that, they need something to carry them, be it submarines, planes or aircraft carriers smile.png 

 

It's true that the tactical advantage of the aircraft carrier is not as big as before but it won't disappear as soon as that. In the future they probably will carry drones instead of aircraft before disappearing.

It's just there to piss off everybody including china while trump is there. If it pissed off North Korea and China then it has done it's job.
