Update :

  1. According to article from yahoo japan the author said he did it on purpose to cause a frenzy.
  2. He's previously been under controversy for refusing to delete controversial description about epilepsy from a book. Japan Epilepsy Society protested against the description calling it 'promoting discrimination', he responded with 'I'm trying to preserve the literary tradition of dark humour.
  3. His next book's publishing contract with Ginko Tree Publishing House in Korea has been now cancelled upon uproar from customers online on their SNS platform.
  4. Top comments on Yahoo Japan are mixed, some are calling him insane/cynical/crazy while others are like his views are honest/refreshing/we support him etc (lots of people are right-wing nationalists who hate Korea/Zainichi Koreans/deny war crimes etc). Twitter tag under author's name '#筒井康隆' has mixed reviews too.

According to google the top comment (14k+ upvotes) in this particular article says 'We support Mr. Tsutsui' and 2nd one is like 'maybe there's more praise than criticism'.

Screencap under spoiler

Yasutaka Tsutsui's most famous work : The Girl Who Leapt Through Time + Paprika.

He deleted the tweet and then later defended it as freedom of speech.

Other non-instiz context :

  • Wrote this craaaazy tweet about how the Japanese ambassador to Korea returning to Korea is acknowledging that comfort women exist..

  • ..because we put this comfort women protest statue right in front of their embassy to remind them of the Korean history they deny.

And he wrote how "we should express our gratitude to that cute little girl by covering her in jizz" and I was like THIS GOTTA BE FAKE? wth

edit:

checked yahoo news japan, and it's only internet commenters so idk how "general" their viewpoint is or if it's skewed but literally every single comment i've read over about 10 pages of comments (there are way more pages but i could only force myself through about 10) were highly supportive of tsutsui.

trash.

glad I pirated your movie, psycho!

also isn't the attack on titan author also a crazy nationalist?

um the author has nothing to do with the movie, he only wrote the book. The movie's screenplay is by Satoko Okudera and directed by Mamoru Hosoda.

good thing i never watch or read his stuff

he has nothing to do with the animated adaptation of his books.

But he would have still earned a part of the movie's sales, wouldn't he?
