MAGIC THE GATHERING DECK TECH: ZOMBIES~~~

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow OH-ers, welcome to another edition of MTG deck tech, where i delve into a deck that caught my attention in the metagame and gives you a guide on how to build it and play it. So today, we will be heading back to Standard, for a particular deck that might get some spotlight once Amonkhet hits the shelves in your loca game stores - Zombies!

This deck is meant for those who loves grindy games and board control; people who likes zombies (especially those dancing zombies from TWICE's Like Ooh Ahh MV or those from T-ara's Roly Poly MV), and of course, this deck is a deck where you closes up the game with a horde of zombies running amok over your opponent uncontrollably.

Here is the decklist: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/639519 (updated list)

One of the common thing in Zombies is: they don't die. Simply. So this deck works the same way. I will divide in different segment about the main zombie spells, discard fodders and other related spells that can buff the deck a bit.

The Zombie Crew:

Cryptbreaker is a 1-mana 1/1 black Zombie creatures that gives you 2/2 Zombie token everytime by discarding a card and at the cost of 2-mana. In early game, it doesn't do anything but during mid-game, if your opponent have no answer to this 1-mana zombie, it will pretty much game over. Ran out of hand cards? No worries, because Cryptbreaker also lets you refill your hand cards by tapping down 3 untapped zombies, so it is quite a strong card being 1 mana.

On the other hand, Prized Amalgam is a 3-mana 3/3 blue-black Zombie creature that pops out on the field everytime a creature enters the field from your graveyard. You must be thinking: this deck only uses red and black manabase so how you do cast Prized Amalgam if it's stuck in your opening hand? Simple, we either discard it through Cryptbreaker's 1st ability or by Haunted Dead, a 4-mana 2/2 black Zombie creature that you may pay 2 mana and discard two cards to return it to play tapped, along with a 1/1 white Spirit token with flying. Let's say you have 2 Prized Amalgams in your hand and a Haunted Dead in your graveyard, you just simply dump the 2 zombies into the graveyard and they will recur back on the battlefield tapped at the beginning of your next end step. One advice would be: hurdle the Prized Amalgam-Haunted Dead combo at your opponent's turn if he or she have no open mana, and that way, you will have lethal damage on your turn.

Discard outlets:

Insolent Neonate is a good one drop 1/1 red Vampire creature with menace. But that is not all: it is a discard outlet that lets you draw a new card while discarding something away (e.g. Haunted Dead or Prized Amalgam). Voldaren Pariah, on the other hand, is one of the biggest payoff while being used as a discard outlet: this 5-mana 3/3 black Vampire Horror creature with flying can be casted with 3-mana when being discarded, on top of that, by sacrifcing 3 creatures, you may have it transformed into a 5/6 Eldrazi Vampire flier that forces your opponent to sacrifice three of his/her creatures. Amazing isn't it?

Cathartic Reunion is one of main staple in this deck as it helps us cycle away dead cards we don't need and refuel new cards into our hand that maybe useful during midgame or late game. Lightning Axe is a spot removal that interacts with the discarding subtheme in this deck and helps you destroy any big creature your opponent have. Key to the City is a 2-drop artifact that also acts as an extra discard outlet and a card draw engine if needed. Ironically, both Haunted Dead and Cryptbreaker can be counted as discard outlets too.

Discarding zombies is our main goal in here but what if we don't have sufficient fuel to close up the game when our opponent's life total is below? That is where these payoff spells comes in.

Alms of the Vein is a 3-mana black Sorcery spell that says "Target opponent loses 3 life and you gain 3 life". It may look costly at 3 mana and being sorcery speed but if you cast this with a Cryptbreaker in play or a Haunted Dead in your graveyard...yeah, that is game over already. Why? Because you can cast spells that have Madness in instant speed! So this is one of alternate wincon. What about Fiery Temper? Just a 3-mana red instant spell that can be casted with 1 mana when being discarded, turning Madness ability online.

Other stuffs:

Scrapheap Scrounger acts as a pseudo-Zombie in this deck as it can recur from the graveyard as much as it can, provided if you have the sufficient amount of creature fodders in graveyard. Geier Reach Sanitarium is our colorless Legendary land, which act both as a discard outlet and our manabase.

Manabase:

Our manabase is pretty straightforward: a playset of Foreboding Ruins, our dual land that produces both the mana we needed for this deck and of course, 9 copies of sweet basic mountain and 7 copies of sweet basic Swamp to sum up the whole deck.

As for sideboard tech, it could be varied, according to the metagame at your local game store. Too much aggro? Just side in a couple of boardwipes and spot removal. Too much control/midrange? Hand disruption and more burn spells would be great.

One thing about this deck is: with the Cycling mechanic returning to Standard with the release of Amonkhet, the cycling spells in that set could further buff up this deck. And also, if you want to splash a third color into this deck, best would be getting blue for Prized Amalgam and you will have access for counterspells and cantrip of that color.

Well, that is for all today. Leave a comment below on how you think about the deck, and tell me what deck tech would you like me to make next.
