The Military Manpower Administration will be responsible for the performance of domestic entertainers' military service from now on.

The MMA sent an official letter to a number of management companies in Korea earlier this month.

For the contents of the official letter, it is a request to cooperate and submit the list of the entertainers under the revision of the Military Service Law.

Companies are required to complete and submit the personal information of their artists (any man born between January 1st, 1980 and December 31st, 1999), including the contracted trainees. Popular culture artists mentioned by the MMA are singers, actors, comedians, dancers, performers, DJs, models, voice actors, musical actors, performing artists, and other broadcasters.

This comes after netizen kept raising concerns online about celebrities enlisting too late and continuing with their entertainment activities.

[+1884, -76] Entertainers should be treated without favors. If you are in the army then you are like any other regular citizen.

[+1197, -22] There are also irregularities in the army service of other countries but Korea is the worst when it comes to corruption in military service.

[+1222, -50] Finally back to normal ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹

[+1014, -25] Let's see if you get into military bands now ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹

[+215, -5] Please let the MMA handle the kids of members of parliament too

[+161, -9] 90% of celebs serve in military bands or in public service

[+172, -17] Are entertainers the only problem? What about the sons of politicians and businessmen? Manage them too

The problems are the entertainers and children of chaebol/politicians.

But the entertainers do get special treatment. Of course people here on OH will defend how that's okay since their faves are affected...it's not okay to get special treatment.

This topic really triggers me, got lots of Korean friends who served the army fairly. Nobody should be above the others, especially those who are in reality healthy and fit to do so.

I hate that entertainer, children of chaebol and politicians get special treatment.

I was in the Army myself in my country and I seem a few fellow soldiers being assigned to clerk instead of a combat role even though they are physically and mentally fit for it.

when you have a designated unit in charge of handling the matter, I feel that's where the special treatment would come around. Just have these people enlist the way how ordinary citizens enlist. Going through a seperate route is always a bad idea

I don't think this is enlisting through a separate route - this entertainer's unit will ensure that celebs waiting till they're 28 to serve will be less of a commonplace, it seems to be the focus of this unit. I also heard yesterday that the number of times celebs can suspend their enlistment is set to be limited so we might begin to see celebs entering the military in their early 20s instead.

No one's safe

This is big

I think for trainees now it is better they go into service voluntarily even without getting called. It is the only way they'll avoid getting a call into service in their early debut, when they are nearing their debut, etc.

Think about the number of celebrities that we will be hearing of enlisting in service by this year and next year.

Like there are a tone of celebrities in their early 20's!! Like actually most celebrities out there are in their early 20's...

I wonder, why k-netizens believe that new rule will actually stop the corruption in the army. Do they really think the companies/politics/businessmen couldn't negotiate unofficially with some MMA officials the same way as they negotiated with someone else before?

Maybe, some idols from that 1980-99 list will be enlisted immediately, but some of them will definitely not... it looks like pr campaign to calm the general public down.

Unless they're specifically talking about the few celebs who seem to successfully postpone service past 30 I think their concerns are misplaced tbh. If they don't like the way many celebs delay past 25 they should be looking to have the law changed so enrollment age limited is lowered cause as long as the celeb enlist before 30 AND they are using an allowed deferred clauses the complaining is unwarranted imo.

We'll see. I figured most celebs have been using the education clause (which is available to non celebs as well) to defer enlistment tbh. The only "special" clause I assume a company could/have use is the work scheduled excuse (I know some older celebs have managed to delay a few month to wrap up some work commitments). I think if they really want to get celebs to go sooner then later they'll need to put limits on the number of times a person can use a clause (assuming such limits aren't already in place). Ex: You can't defer for education more then twice.

? how is this an actual issue.

isn't the problem more with preferential treatment? unless the age makes a difference

This basically means almost every current boy group will be affected, doesn't it?

Yep even the rookies who debuted just last year and this year. This is going to fuck up alot of companies.
