Turning 21...

Tomorrow (or after tomorrow for some) is going to be my birthday: April 7th, I'll be turning 21 but where I'm from turning 21 isn't that big of a deal. I feel numb and kinda apathetic but the last few days I was very worried. I'm no longer a teenager nor am I at the turning point that is 20 years old and at the same time I'm not an actually grown mature adult either. It's such a weird age to me, I don't feel like I want to grow older, from now on there will only be responsabilities and I need to become financely independent soon (I'm a student rn) and in no time, the older people around will expect me to settle down with someone. There will be more expectations than ever now. The future is so scary.

What do you think about it? How do you feel abour your current age? Also is there anyway to make my birthday be fun?

if ur an american the absolute must is celebrating by drinking whether by party, bar or just having fun with a few friends. if ur not american you probably already had this privilege 3 years ago. in which case bdays shouldve stopped mattering already. after you reach drinking age people dont typically care its just another day of the year haha. just do whatever you want and make the day an excuse to do things you dont normally do

Birthday's can be quite scary.. I like celebrating my birthday with the people who are important to me and who I love. I like focusing on the positive things like how much I've learnt through the years and great memories that I'm thankful for. You shouldn't think too much about the future, but more on the present. Don't get ahead and don't look behind, just accept what is happening now. You are the only thing that can ruin your happiness. Changes happen constantly, whether you like it or not. Your whole life could change tomorrow, for the better or worse. Yearning for the future will cause you to miss the gift of the present, and the present is all we have. No one knows for sure how many days we get to have. So, don't miss the opportunity to take full advantage of every single one.

Also : Happy early birthday! I wish you the best! smile.png

I have a huge age hang-up and it started when I turned 20. I feel like before that I was growing up in each passing year, now that I'm in my 20s I'm growing older instead, as each year is one step closer to 30, 40, 50, etc. I keep counting how long I have until I'm 30 or how old I'm going to be by the time this or that is released, etc. Where I'm from turning 21 is not a big deal either so I guess it was just as scary as turning 20 was, and just as scary as turning 22 will be this year.

Whenever I'm feeling like this I try telling myself that 30s are the new 20s, that you can be a youthful person no matter your age, it's more of a mindset and way of living, and that my life will probably get better as I get older since I'll keep getting to know myself, grow as a person and let go of past insecurities.

Also, happy birthday in advance :)

bruh literally your age means nothing. It's just a pointless number telling you how much time you've wasted waiting for your demise.

Bruh why you gotta make me more depressed, this nihilistic view makes my existential crisis want to grow even more.

The good thing about getting older is that other peoples' expectations matter less and less to you. It's your life; don't let anyone dictate what path you should take.  Live at the pace you want to live. Happy early b-day btw. smile.png

Thank you, your words are definitely uplifting. smile.png

My parents are coming over, they'll probably force me to go to some fancy expensive restaurant to celebrate as a family. it's not like I have anything else to do either

I have no idea what I did for my 21st birthday and I think that's pretty great- you should do the same. Just make sure to eat delicious food.

You'll also learn to not gaf about pressures soon (just try to make sure you do and do it the right way, as in not just becoming a jackass to everyone but actually becoming capable of handling situations and emotions).

Cheers.

you dont necessarily have to celebrate ur bday the way you want on ur bday either. if you got something you wanna do in particular by yourself or with other friends, then make time for it and declare it ur day

Happy early birthday! My birthday is on the 12th and I'm turning 17. Honestly these years are gonna be really stressful... thinking about the future makes me really anxious bc I have to pick a college soon and graduating from high school.. all of that is just too stressful for me.

Happy early birthday as well! Turning 17 can be stressful indeed. Don't forget to treat yourself and take time to relax. Graduating High school and embarking on a new journey will be very fun and exciting, look forward to the fun part of it all.

Don't get ahead and don't look behind, just accept what is happening now.

When it was my 21st birthday, I went to my favorite cafe and ordered a huge version of my favorite pie to commemorate the occasion since 21st birthdays aren't a huge deal for my family either. I recommend treating yourself too, it'll make you feel better! You have a year of experience and memories to celebrate.

As for the growing up and finding yourself part, I don't like to limit it to a specific age either. Some of my friends are married already or have stable jobs. I'm still a student and haven't made a place for myself yet, but that journey doesn't need to be defined by a schedule imposed on you by other people.

It also makes me feel a bit better when I remember that the UN defines youth up to the age of 24
