How do you feel about idols dividing their income with their group?

I personally think it's incredibly naive and foolish. Idol careers are short lived and unless they are a top tier group, there will come a point in the future when the money flowing in will come to a halt. I've read articles about first generation idols who end up experiencing financial struggles in the latter stages of their career and it makes me realize that these idols really aren't being taught proper financial planning.

I'm sure kids like Sejeong and Mina feel it's noble to help out their group, but they really shouldn't have to. To put it bluntly, I don't even understand how their groupmates can accept their financial help? Stuff like this is bound to create a mess in the future (see: miss a) and I also think it's also quite irresponsible of the companies to encourage this type of financial handling.

It depends, the successful groups can later change their contracts which ends up happening with groups under JYPE and the group themselves can change it the way they want to.

But even groups we see as not successful can change their contract terms as well.

This is not just kpop though most groups in the music industry share income first and just get their part.

This is the type of thing that is none of my business, tbh. I don't know why people are so up in arms, it's not their money anyway. Idols are mostly adults who can sort this out and if they aren't they have their parents help/consent.

Edit - got negged bc of this comment. You guys are way too sensitive about things

I don't know. I understand a portion of the income that an idol earns from individual activities going to the group. (NOT divide evenly, but a specified portion), because I feel like that idol being a member of that group might have a lot to do with them getting that gig (i.e, the group's name/popularity may have a role in landing that idol's individual gigs). If that makes sense, lol.

But that's just my opinion. And they can split their money however they choose. It's really not our place to decide. smile.png

I dont agree with it, at all.

Frankly, financial planning should be taught in school.

I understand that its seen as selfish or whatever to not share the money, but Id never with coworkers/friends/family without some dire reason and a payment plan LOL

My coworkers are not my family, and even with family financial issues are a thing (my bro owes me 1800 because financial aid didnt come thru this term)

Save for your own future, you never know when things can change instantaneously. Bubbles can pop and the economy can go to shit. Its never to early to start saving for retirement/healthcare/travel/whatever.

Group contracts where you share everything is also dumb. Share only group activity earning, but your solo schedules? Keep that for yourself.

In any case, it is their money, they have a right to do whatever they want but that doesnt mean i agree with their actions...

Mina is still a minor, she's only 17 lol and Sejeong is 20. Even if they are legally adults, I honestly don't think they have enough life experience to know the true value of money. I mean they've been trainees for x amount of years as well, they don't really know much outside of trainee/idol life.

I mean most people wouldn't even split like 5% of their income to their immediate families lol. I think it's naive that they're splitting their money for group members they've only known for a few years in an such a volatile industry. Especially the money they earned from IOI promotions, that's completely separate and before the group was formed.

I think this only works well during the start of their careers when the group has to pay off their 'debts' or the investments put on them. After that, it probably needs to reevaluated and see if the members themselves wants it or if it's still a good option. Money is a sensitive issue and dividing income equally is probably fine if everyone puts it in around the same amount of work but unfortunately that's not the case. There's always one or a few members doing all the brunt of the work.

I really don't understand why people think this is just a kpop thing though?

I don't know anywhere it happens. In adult world, this is consider unfair.

As an adult, I understand the value of money nowadays. If only I can't live without food and shelter then it's ok but that's not how reality is.

The music industry over all it happens in groups, they share income and if a person starts making more than sure someone might make a little more but overall they share.

I'm a adult too but just because a group shares money doesn't mean it's bad other groups like Beast did a long time as well and look at them now.

Plus groups can change the terms of their contracts so its not like they are stuck like that.

many dont know how idol groups split their money. LOL  they take into account payment to the entertainment company, cameramen, coordinators, promotional team, other staff etc

.mA splits all profits equally among the 4 members even if one member has more solo activities in first years. This includes income from CFs, variety shows,.. and album sales.  However, money made from drama roles and homeland CFs (product promotions in Thailand or chinese activity for chinese memb) are pocketed by the member who did the work.    If this was true, in mA others doesnt share homeland activity  but korean  members ,yes .S  earned 12,5%  in her peak years and after that-diferent % from each activity

Now is this : Company (50), Artist (50) or Company (60), Artist (40)  wtf is this?

Personally I wouldn't stand to share my earnings with anyone my personal money when I'm working my ass off and bringing in most of it...
