The reason is that popularity is usually not determined by talent. Promotion, luck, and coming from a big name are main factors. Of course, you do need to have a minimum amount of talent to have a certain amount of popularity, but otherwise, there isn't a correlation in my opinion.

Thank you for sharing these!

I know its your opinion regardless it is motivated by jealousy or not, but there is a reason why she was chosen as #1 female soloist by kpop companies (incl SM JYP YG). So while you think she is "overrated", she is acknowledged even by music industry experts.

Knowing that Dean is famous while Babylon is still a nugu is damn sad because his vocals are way more versatile than Dean's in my opinion. I mean just look at those views, just pathetic. The fact that nafla is also on the track and it has this little views really leaves me asking how the fuck. If people knew the slightest thing about babylon then they'd know how damn talented the man is. Like have none of yall seem him dance, damn.

For digital sales, Lee Hi's Seoulite album was actually one of the best selling in 2016 and the title song Breathe was one of the top songs of the year.  But her fans generally are her fans due to her music and singing.  They aren't the type of fans who will bulk buy physical albums, buy photo cards and other typical idol group type merchandise....and like most of the big entertainment companies, for every 1 dollar spent promoting a solo act like Lee Hi, YG will spend 90 dollars on the company's idol group development and promotions.  Worse, during her long hiatus, YG was apparently actually rejecting almost all collaboration offers, OST offers, etc. that came her way.

The notion that she doesn't have much stage presence is mostly false and started due to the 1234 MV, where the MV producer and director intentionally cast her as an awkward rookie, with sloppy editing of the MV and everything for added effect. (For example, compare to the debut video of IU, where half of the video consists of scenery shots, distant shots from behind, mist, dancers, etc.  and all IU had to do was walk slowly and only be on camera for a few seconds at a time, before the video would cut away to something else.  Good debut video.)  For Lee Hi's debut video, they were inept at implementing the "awkward rookie" concept in the 1234 video.  They should have made it clearer that she was acting in the role of an awkward rookie for a video showing a rookie fresh off the mean streets and just starting out in the entertainment business.  Unfortunately,  a lot of casual viewers didn't realize that awkward rookie-ness was the whole point of the visual story of the MV and concluded that she really was as awkward as portrayed in the video, even though her acting and presence on stage and in subsequent videos just a couple months later were excellent and all more demanding for her as the solo performer than the performances are for typical idol group videos where 7 plus members take turns doing stuff in front of the camera and the producer/director simply picks out a few seconds of highlights for each member.)
