a thought on fans

I was listening to sports talk radio and they said something about fans that I think bears repeating on here (with some additional commentary).

It is YOUR choice who you want to follow and how you want to follow them. If you want to spend your time watching them or spend your money supporting them, it doesn't matter. It is about what is best for you, not what is best for others.

If you don't like something they do and speak out against them, that does not make you less a fan. If you choose not to speak out it doesn't make you a bad person. Enabling bad behavior isn't the same thing as not talking against it every chance you get.

If you choose to only be a fair weather fan or a bandwagon fan, that does not mean that you enjoy them any less than others. Just because your time together is short doesn't mean it isn't a good memory.

Ultimately, you are the one who must live your life. No one else has the right to tell you that you aren't a real fan just because you do things differently than them. Passion doesn't always equal obsession.

Oh, God, yes! I hate it whenever I see those comments of "You aren't a real fan, if you don't..." "If you were a real fan, you would...".

A lot of people seem to think that being a fan means you have to do certain things, but literally the only condition to be a fan is to be enthisiatic about something and if you don't stream their Youtube videos, but buy their albums instead it doesn't make you a better or worse fan than someone who doesn't buy their Youtube albums, but streams their videos.

There are many ways to support your faves and none of them makes you a more "real" fan than another.

You can be anything you like. Sounds nice and pretty yes.

But let's be real if comparing two people of equal circumstances, where one is willing to fork out money to support their fave and the other is not. Their life priorities are different and one is clearly more invested as a fan than the other.

Not necessarily. What if someone wants to support their faves with money, but doesn't have any? But tries to make up for it by streaming and promoting them as much as they can.

Not really, it just means they have different priorities. Two people with $50 expendable income and similar interest won't always spend their money in the same way. One may enjoy something and spend time on it, but would rather save their money towards a bigger purchase (like a new laptop), while the other wants to spend that money on an album, posters or whatever. That doesn't mean that the first person likes the group any less, just that they have some other need/want that needs to be filled first.

Also, there are plenty of people like me who don't have a place in their home/car/office to play cds. There's no point in me buying a cd if I can't listen to it.
