Looking to try out Magic the Gathering but don't know where to start? Don't feel like spending a lump sum on a deck where you might dislike? Or simply, you spent too much on your oppars/noonas' albums but tempt to play MTG? Look no further! You have to come to the right place! Yes, today, i will show you guys a deck where you won't empty your wallet, and it is easy to learn for beginners. Best part? It only cost below $50! Woah! Is this a dream? Or is Lovely Summer-oppa bragging? Nope, because i can guarantee this deck is easy and simple to start with and make your friends gasp in breath as you fire off your spells non-stop. I repeat, non-stop! Without further ado, let's take a look~

Decklist:

Storm...the greatest deck ever existed in the Modern format of Magic the Gathering. A combo deck where you cast a trillion spells before finding the final piece to end the game. In Modern, this paricularly was being build around the namesake mechanic, Storm, along with one card in that will put the deck together - Grapeshot.

So what does Grapeshot do? It is a 1-mana red sorcery spell that deals 1 damage to target player or creature, and a second ability that says "Storm (When you cast this spell, copy it for each spell casted before it this turn. You may choose new targets for the copies.)", meaning if you have cast 10 spells before casting Grapeshot, you can then copy Grapshot for 10 times. The same mathematics applied if you casted 20 spells or 30 spells or etc...blahblahblah.

But Grapeshot is no longer legal in Standard, so how would you play Storm in Standard? With the help of one card - Aetherflux Reservoir.

Aetherflux Reservoir is a 4-mana artifact spell that reads "Whenever you cast a spell, you gain 1 life for each spell you've casted this turn" and "Pay 50 life: Aetherflux Reservoir deals 50 damages to target creature or player". So in overall, Aetherflux Reservoir works in the same way like how Grapeshot, but with a more consistent flow and less fizzling, compared to the sorcery. But you might be thinking: how do i cast spells in order to gain insane amount of life before firing off the artifact at my opponent? I will tell you slowly. Let's starts from the spells that will help us build up the Storm count we need for the deck to work.

First up, we have a total of 12 costless spells (meaning 0 mana), that will help in building the Storm count before we fire off the 50 damages from our Aetherflux Reservoir's second ability. Ornithopter is our only 0-mana artifact creature that will occassionally help us block some huge creatures, allowing us to take no damage at the very least. Bone Saw and Cathar's Shield are our handy Equipments which we can equip it to our Ornithopter if needed.

Our other Equipment is Inventor's Goggles, which could be useful in late games as part of the Storm count. Renegade Map can act as a tutor for our missing land drops, if needed; while Pacification Array could help stall the game a little when we are facing aggressive.

The combo pieces:

Paradoxical Outcome is our core piece to this Storm deck. At 4-mana instant speed, it can gain us not only massive hand cards advantage but allowing us to reset our board, then recast the 0-mana spells again, to add up the Storm count. Baral's Expertise is our newest addition to the deck, a 5-mana sorcery spell which bounce any 3 creatures and/or artifacts back to our owner's hand (which usually we will be targetting ourselves), and allowing us to cast a spell for free. This sorcery spell could chain up with Paradoxical Outcome, to add 2 extra count towards Storm.

Reverse Engineer is our cantrip spell, giving us 3 cards, flitering through our deck to find our combo, and with the Improvise ability, you can cast this as early as turn 3, or even better, turn 2! Worrying about your Storm plan might foil? Don't fret because we have Plan B - Bastion Inventor is 6-mana 4/4 Vedalken Artificer creature that comes with hexproof and the same Improvise ability. Bastion Inventor could close up the game if the whole game get too saturated with persistent threat. And also, did i mention, Bastion Inventor + Inventor's Goggles is our secret deck tech?

What about our manabase? Easy. Just 20 basic Island and you are good to go. And have you notice that in the decklist, we are playing 61 cards instead of 60? That is because with 1 extra card, it could means we can increase the Storm count, or simply, get fizzled by our own spells, but usually, it won't happen.

Upgrades:

Personally for me, if you want to upgrade the deck, i would suggest adding Whir of Invention, a X+3 blue instant speed spell, that help us tutor any artifacts out from our deck; and also, having a couple of counterspells in the sideboard would be good against grindy control decks or midrange threats in the games over the long run. I have seen another version, where it splashed white as a second color, utililizing lifegain spells of that color to increase your life total faster.

Conclusion? This is definitely a fun deck that you can playtest over casual games, and i have witnessed other players in local game stores beating Tier 1 decks using this Standard Storm deck during major events, which is quite, satisfying. Leave a comment below and tell me what you think about the deck tech and if you would like to know more budget deck techs, just DM me and i might have a few cheap yet enjoyable deck techs for you.

We have come to the end of another edition of MTG deck tech. Hope to see you guys soon~ adios~ (possible, i might post a Modern deck tech next week. Who knows)
