Blood, thorns, and tears in first teaser for Seven Day Queen

Two brothers, one queen, and one throne… is it any wonder that this is going to end in blood and tears? The first teaser has been released for KBS’s historical romance drama Seven Day Queen, and though it’s just a teeny tiny glimpse of the three leading characters and quick flashes of symbolic imagery, I have a feeling that this drama is going to be beautiful to look at.

Seven Day Queen tells the tragic story of the queen who had the shortest reign in Joseon history. Park Min-young (Healer) stars as Queen Dangyeong, the daughter of a powerful politician who dreams of an ordinary life but ends up embroiled in two brothers’ struggle for the throne, and falls in love with one of them. Yeon Woo-jin (Introverted Boss) plays King Jungjong, who spent most of his life living as if dead under the watchful eye of his jealous half-brother, tyrant king Yeonsangun, played by Lee Dong-gun (Laurel Tree Tailors).

Yeonsangun was overthrown and replaced by Jungjong, but he was heavily opposed as well, and when Queen Dangyeong’s father led a coup attempt against him, she was deposed after only seven days as queen. Legend has it that he looked up at a mountain in her direction every day, and so she hung up her skirt on that mountain so that he’d know she was thinking of him too.

The teaser is over in a flash, but we can catch glimpses of Park Min-young leaning against a man’s back, and then tears spilling from her eyes before she walks off into the distance. The two kings give steely looks, and we get a series of visual metaphors: a man and woman interlacing their fingers, an empty throne, a woman who pricks her finger on a thorn and spills blood. Love, politics, and tragedy. Check, check.

Did anyone else squeal when they saw Yeon Woo-jin in a hanbok? It’s been too long! It’s hard to keep my expectations down when the PD of Healer is bringing us a romance between Park Min-young and Yeon Woo-jin, even though history tells us that their story is no picnic. But since when have dramas ever cared about being faithful to history, right? Great, the show hasn’t even started and I’m worried about how it’s going to end. Seven Day Queen follows Mystery Queen on Wednesdays and Thursdays and premieres May 31.

Thwarted kisses and rom-com hijinks in Seven Day Queen

7dayqueen27.jpg

Well this is a 180-degree turn if I’ve ever seen one. The first teaser for KBS’s new Joseon-era romance Seven Day Queen promised tragedy and tears for the royal love triangle, but this newest teaser for the series could not be more different, featuring pratfalls and kissyfaces. Did the show become a rom-com overnight, or are they just trying to lure us in with cuteness? I don’t know, but I can’t say it’s not working.

The drama is about the real-life tragic love story of King Jungjong and Queen Dangyeong, who were torn apart by political enemies, forcing the queen out of the palace after only a week—the shortest reign of any queen in Joseon’s history. Park Min-young (Healer) stars as Dangyeong, and Yeon Woo-jin (Introverted Boss) will play Jungjong. At the start of the story he’ll be a prince who lives a stifled life so as not to threaten his half-brother, tyrant king Yeonsangun, played by Lee Dong-gun (Laurel Tree Tailors). In this story, Yeonsangun will be a powerful king who has everyone under his feet, but will never have the heart of the woman he so ardently loves.

The teaser opens with Park Min-young’s voiceover: “Because I love you, all of the tears in the world came to me along with you.†She sees Yeon Woo-jin smiling at her, arms stretched wide. She breaks into a smile and runs to him in slow motion… and then suddenly trips on a rock and falls flat on her face. The tone goes full-on comedic, as the romantic mood is shattered by her mortifying fall, though Yeon Woo-jin just seems to think it’s adorable.

He takes full advantage of the moment by swooping in for a kiss, only to have Lee Dong-gun literally get in between them like a haughty child. And for added cheekiness, the song in the background goes, “Oppa-ya, I found someone I really like.†Heh. I don’t know that this teaser’s tone is one that we can expect for the drama, since it feels more like a commercial for the show than a preview of what’s to come, but it does make me hope for some happy romantic moments for the couple, because they’re pretty darn cute together.

Seven Day Queen follows Mystery Queen on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning May 31.
