I though he chased those men after the incident happened, found them and killed one. In this context I said "he shouldn't have taken the law into his hands". Another user clarified he was present there, when the incident happened. In this context, of course he had to help his mother if some attacked her and not just stand still and it wasn't premeditated murder. so "life sentence" (the harshest sentences of any crime) appears as unjust sentence.
