Senseless People Caused a Turtle's Death in Thailand

A popular sea turtle in Thailand suffered tremendously, fell into a coma, and later died of blood poisoning after people threw hundreds of coins into her pool. Passersby in the seaside town gifted the animal money in hopes of gaining good karma. Over the years, Osmin - which means "piggy bank" in Thai - swallowed so much currency she could barely swim. On the day of her rescue, veterinarians found her panicking and nearly drowning in her pool. When they examined her stomach, they discovered over 915 coins. Once, her shell had cracked from the large mass of metal she ingested, she underwent intensive surgery. Afterwards, she clung to life until she tragically died from an acute intestinal infection caused by the coin removal.

Ignorant and twisted people were throwing them to her for good luck.

Then who ever was in charge of carrying for this sea turtle should have done something to prevent that from happening.

Its not something that happened in a spur of the moment, it has been going on for years.

Apparently, it's like a tradition for good luck. Nobody cared before. But since the incident, people have protested that it puts animals at severe risk.

Well there you go, now they are crying that an animal is dead because of a tradition that someone must have started at some point.

If the keepers were responsible enough they would have stopped it, but clearly that did not happen.

Poor turtle... did it have pica, or did the people in charge of its care not feed it properly, forcing it to ingest the coins for lack of anything else? Either way, the people in charge should have noticed it was eating the coins; its death could have been preventable. They should be punished for neglect. I don't blame the people who threw the coins in though; they probably didn't realize the turtle would eat them.

She didn't have pica. But people were very much allowed to give her coins as food, since it's a tradition.

Turtles are a good source of food. That turtle will be eaten in a short period of time.

Unfortunately, the vet will keep its body for studying.

Seemingly, it ate few coins daily over years. The caretaker couldn't notice. Also, my dog ate metal staples and I would not know if it did not vomit them out.

why would a turtle eating your coin give you good luck? wtf... the poor thing ohdearplz.png

No one fed her coin. They just threw the coin into the pool without knowing she would eat them. I guess this is a loan tradition originated in the west? Don't the westerner throw coin into the fountain for good luck?

Anyway, now, peoples are aware that animal in the pool may eat whatever thrown into the pool and some temples has started putting up "Don't throw coin" signs.

Yes, Westerners throw coins in a FOUNTAIN, where no animals live.

In a Chinese zoo, people threw coins at two turtles and they ingested them.

As an American, I don't understand why anyone would throw money at an animal.

It greatly baffles me that this was such a recurring problem.
