  • Monica Mares, 37, and her son Caleb Peterson, 20, of Clovis, New Mexico, were arrested on incest charges in February 2016
  • The couple were living together with Mares' eight other children, some of whom even called Caleb, their eldest biological half-sibling, 'Dad'
  • Mother Mares gave up her son Caleb when he was a baby and didn't raise him - they reconnected over Facebook when he was 18
  • The couple were arrested after an argument with an in-the-know neighbor who reported their unusual and illegal relationship
  • They were released on bail in August and ordered to stay away from each other
  • Avoiding a trial, they pleaded guilty to fourth degree incest and given three years probation each
  • They are ordered to stay away from each other for a year and a half, but have vowed to remain together

This happens a lot with family members who only find each other as adults. It's called GSA, and we shouldn't treat either one like pieces of shit just because we don't understand.

With the rate of adoption, etc. we need to be open about this so people can overcome it and move on with their lives rather than hiding it and perhaps following through because they fear help in case people treat them just like this.

To clarify: I don't approve of incest in any way, but I also don't approve of judging situations we've never experienced in case it cuts people off from real help.

ugh i don't know many times i've heard of these "parent gave up son/daughter for adoption, later fall in love without knowing who the other is, find out they're related, but don't care" stories. ohdearplz.png Like if I was adopted and the person I fell in love with later down the line was my own parent I would cancel that relationship so quickly.

I've heard about these situations...Basically bc they never developed a familial relationship and establish that boundary that they can develope attractions to each others....it's kinda messed up....

This.

I've heard too many stories like this for the disgust to register. Daughter x dad, grandma x grandson is usually what I hear about. So, in that sense, mom x son is unusual in this context.
