水中月 镜中花

梦打碎 æ‰ä¼šçŸ¥çœŸå‡

风潇潇 雨飘摇

泪眼问花花ä¸ç”

mèng dǎ suì / cái huì zhī zhēn jiǎ

fÄ“ng xiÄo xiÄo / yÇ” piÄo yáo

lèi yÇŽn wèn huÄ huÄ bù dá

Moon in the water, flower in the mirror;

Only by shattering a dream does one learn whether it is true or false.

The wind howls and the rain sways.

The tears ask the flower; the flower does not answer.

There is no returning to the initial years.

Love or hate, [it results from] merely one momentary slip.

If one could go through life with one's loved one just as sweetly as the first moment of encounter[1],

would be willing to lay down [my] bitter and persistent struggling.

There is no waiting until the time of full bloom arrives.

Longing has long since swirled through the air to the ends of the earth.

[Loving to the point that it is] carved into the soul, expending all worries and attachment,

cannot make [you] stay. Moreover, [i'm] unable to let go.

sigh [over the fact that] all of the luxuriant flowers fall down.

How many springs and summers have come to pass?

Roads have an end, but yearning is boundless.

There is no safeguarding the flower-like years.

T/N:

[1] 人生若åªå¦‚åˆè§: This is the famous starting phrase of the poem 《木兰è¯Â·æ‹Ÿå¤å†³ç»è¯æŸ¬å‹ã€‹ by Qing Dynasty poet Nalan Xingde.

Original text:

I'll just translate/paraphrase the first half:

If one were to always interact/get along with one's loved one as one had done in the beginning, so full of sweetness and profound joy, then there would be no separation and abandonment such as in the case of Lady Ban. You had an effortless change of heart for no reason and yet you turn around and say that feelings normally change easily between lovers.

Lady Ban was a prominent consort of Emperor Cheng of Han, but she was eventually cast aside by him in favor of the dancer Zhao Feiyan and set up for accusations of witchcraft. The poem 《怨歌行》 (Song of Resentment) is attributed to her and in it, she is compared to an autumn fan that has been discarded.
