The truth is a funny thing, both fixed and fluid depending on how you look at it. It’s possible for multiple people to have the exact same experience, yet remember it in vastly different ways. A new case will force Ji-wook to look at his own past with new eyes, and help him realize that what he’s always believed to be true may have been a lie all along.

EPISODE 31 RECAP

SuspiciousPartner31-32-00008.jpg SuspiciousPartner31-32-00009.jpg

As they spend a lazy afternoon together, Ji-wook worries that Bong-hee is about to do something. When she turns to him, looking upset, he thinks that this is his sentencing. He tries to hold tight to her hand, but she pushes it away and says, “Let’s break up.â€

Ji-wook knows what this is about, and he asks when she found out. She asks him when he learned about her father, and why he suffered alone instead of talking to her. Ji-wook says that it’s because it’s not important to him what kind of person her father was. But Bong-hee argues that it’s important to her, saying that it hurts to watch him suffer because of her, so Ji-wook just promises not to suffer.

With tears in her eyes, Bong-hee says that her father wasn’t the man Ji-wook thinks he was, but that she can’t even insist on it (because the law says that he was). Ji-wook says that’s something they can think about, but Bong-hee says that she hates this whole situation.

suspiciousp3132-00043.jpg

She repeats that she just wants to break up, and asks him to stop trying to change her mind. Ji-wook says that he hates this too, because no matter what she says, he won’t ever let her go. But Bong-hee tells him that no matter what he says, it won’t work.

She turns and walks away from him, fighting her tears. As she goes, Bong-hee tells herself that she did the right thing, though she isn’t very convincing and she fears that she made the wrong decision. She wonders where she should go now.

When Ji-wook arrives home, he peeks into Bong-hee’s room, only to find it empty.

suspiciousp3132-00051.jpg

Somehow Bong-hee ends up at Ji-hae’s new apartment. She boldly asks if she can stay over for a few days, pushing her way in when Ji-hae tries to shut the door in her face. Bong-hee manages to talk Ji-hae into letting her stay despite her objections, even though they both agree that they hate each other.

Ji-hae isn’t happy about this, especially when Bong-hee flops down on her couch without permission, and she asks why Bong-hee can’t stay with someone she likes. Bong-hee argues that pushing yourself onto someone you like would be rude, but doing that to someone you dislike is different. This is her way of getting revenge on Ji-hae (and getting payback for Ji-hae stealing her boyfriend). HA, I love her twisty logic.

SuspiciousPartner31-32-00085.jpg SuspiciousPartner31-32-00083.jpg

A little sadly, Bong-hee says that Ji-hae is useful right now because Bong-hee was feeling miserable and stressed: “After I hurt him, I wondered all day if I’d done the right thing or not.†She says that she doesn’t know if she’s sane or crazy, and that she feels like she wants to die. But she brightens a bit and says that seeing Ji-hae gives her the will to fight. Ji-hae sees how upset Bong-hee is, and she gives in, sighing that this is nuts.

Bong-hee can’t sleep that night, her mind whirling with memories of Ji-wook kissing her. She remembers him begging her never to break up with him, and she can’t stop herself from crying.

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching? (by DB Staff)

  • I blinked and it’s suddenly July, which means that there’s a whole new crop of dramas appearing on the horizon. I’m actually a little sad that the current drama cycle is starting to wind down, because it’s a good batch of shows, and I think we all have the panda eyes to prove it. â€“girlfriday

  • Suspicious Partner: The separation was entirely warranted and understandable within the context, but also completely predictable, so I’m waiting it out because I feel like when these two are in resistance/denial mode, the show’s momentum halts. Now that Ji-wook’s revisiting his old memories, I’m hoping we’ll get the plot-ball rolling again, and also wrap up this serial murder case that feels like it’s run out of steam already. Can’t we just go back to what the show does well, which is bumbling Bong-hee being adorably awkward and the cuteness prevailing?

girlfriday

  • Suspicious Partner: Did they really need to push each other away again? I really dislike the my-father-killed-your-father-I-must-leave-you trope, unless there is actually a murderous, traitorous father and we’re in a revenge or historical drama. In so many cases, it’s used as a crutch to motivate a separation and a misunderstanding that feels contrived (because no fathers did any killing), and it really bugs me. Whatever the opposite of dramaland catnip is, that one’s mine.

News article talking about Suspicious Partner:

'Suspicious partner' Ji Chang-wook · Nam Ji-hyun

2017070307335939508_1.jpg&key=8c76845f89

Ji Chang wook and Nam Ji Hyun are unwilling to break up in the SBS drama 'winning partner' (directed by Park Sun-ho)

The beginning of Jiwook and Bonghee was very special. Bonghee has left a strong impression when she misunderstood Jiwook as a pervert on the subway. Coincidences  occured and how Jiwook eventually helps bonghee by dropping all charges against her for being accused of her ex-bf's murder which resulted in Jiwook losing his job as a prosector. Over time, it became clear that they were not a light fate as the two met again as lawyers and lawyers. Jiwook and bonghee then ended up working together in one office. Not long later jiwook belatedly acknowledged his heart and him and bonghee entered into a relationship. The couple, Ji Wook and Bong Hee, seemed to be the most beautiful couple in the world, but their fate was severe. Jiwook realized that the perpetrator of his parents' fire accident may be the father of Bong Hee. Bong-hee also noticed the situation and the change in Ji-wook's behavior, and eventually took things into her own hands and left him. In the past ep31-32, Ji wook recalled the appearance of Jang Moo-young (Kim Hongpa), who had pressured him into making false testimony against Bonghee's father as an arsonist, but the precise situation of the case is still unknown.

In the 'suspicious partner' who left only 8 more episodes, how would the love of Ji-Wook and Bong-hee who are having a hard time every day due to the unwanted farewell ends up especially when the new truth of his parents' fire case is revealed? The production team said, "We are grateful to viewers who send their love steadily to our 'suspicious partner' with only eight episodes left, and I would like to you to cheer us to the end so that Jiwook and Bonghee can overcome the difficult parting and walk the flowery path again."

  • Suspicious Partner: Episodes 33-34SuspiciousPartner33-34-00116.jpg

Personal issues get put on the back-burner as a familiar threat returns to menace Ji-wook and Bong-hee. As Ji-wook deals with the knowledge that his own memories may not be as reliable as he once believed them to be, he’ll be forced to consider what happens when a person’s memories actively lie. What is the truth, when even the person who owns the memories doesn’t know what really happened?

EPISODE 33 RECAP

Bong-hee finds herself alone in a hospital room with a suddenly very awake Hyun-soo. He stares at her for a long moment, then he shakes his head and steps toward Bong-hee. She says his name to warn him off, and he looks at her with innocent surprise, asking, “You know who I am?†(I knew it.)

After recalling some confusing new memories of his parents’ deaths that seem to contradict his older ones, Ji-wook heads home, but a call from Chief Bang has him rushing to the hospital. In a hallway, he sees Yoo-jung with Hyun-soo, who walks right by Ji-wook with just a mildly curious glance, not a hint of recognition in his eyes. Ji-wook finds Bong-hee, who tells him that Hyun-soo was taken for testing. She asks how Hyun-soo looked to Ji-wook, saying that he seemed strange to her.

SuspiciousPartner33-34-00058.jpg SuspiciousPartner33-34-00059.jpg

As they wait for Hyun-soo’s test results, Yoo-jung tells them that they won’t be allowed to talk to Hyun-soo today. Ji-wook asks her to call him when they can see him, and he and Bong-hee leave together. He offers her a ride, but she declines.

Ji-wook seems about to tell Bong-hee that he suspects his memories of the fire that killed his parents may not be reliable. But instead, he just makes awkward small talk about which bus she should take, then cringes at himself for chickening out. He drives past her at the bus stop a few minutes later, noting her downcast expression.

Eun-hyuk, Chief Bang, and CEO Byun have an impromptu meeting, including adorable little Jae-hong, who’s still at Ji-wook’s place. They discuss Hyun-soo, and Chief Bang vows to see him locked up, though Eun-hyuk assures him that Hyun-soo is already in custody and that Yoo-jung will take care of everything.

SuspiciousPartner33-34-00087.jpg SuspiciousPartner33-34-00082.jpg

CEO Byun suddenly asks Jae-hong why he’s still here, getting an irritated eye-roll in response (ha, he’s such a little Ji-wook clone). Jae-hong stubbornly refuses to speak to CEO Byun, but when Ji-wook arrives home, he throws himself at his new friend for a hug. Is it me, or does Ji-wook look a little smug that the kid loves him? Ji-hae nearly has a heart attack when she finds Bong-hee lurking in her dark apartment, but Bong-hee says in a flat voice that she no longer has a heart. She asks Ji-hae if amnesia is common, but Ji-hae has no idea.

When the stew Bong-hee made is declared horrible by Ji-hae, Bong-hee tucks an envelope into her hand, saying that it’s for her living expenses. Ji-hae frowns at the tiny amount of money, ha. Bong-hee starts to say something else in a depressed voice, and Ji-hae interrupts dryly, “Are you sad? You’re sad again? You’re not the only one who’s sad. I’m sad too.†HAHA, she’s hilarious. But Bong-hee sighs that she really is sad, and she’s not the only one. Ji-wook stays up late that night, thinking about his new memories. They seem to indicate that District Attorney Jang brainwashed him into believing that Bong-hee’s father killed his parents.

He heads downstairs to find CEO Byun still there, wanting to talk about a reinstatement application that he found. He asks if Ji-wook is trying to become a prosecutor again, wondering if he’s unhappy as a lawyer. Ji-wook admits that it’s frustrating that he can’t do anything about criminals like Hyun-soo, especially when he’s the one that got Hyun-soo freed.

SuspiciousPartner33-34-00138.jpg SuspiciousPartner33-34-00144.jpg

CEO Byun confesses that he didn’t like it when Ji-wook was a prosecutor because he was always exhausted and overworked, and that he always worried he’d end up like his father. Ji-wook smiles at his fatherly concern, saying that District Attorney Jang may not even allow him to be rehired.

Ji-wook approaches Chief Bang to ask his help in learning more about his parents’ deaths so that he can confront District Attorney Jang. Chief Bang interrupts Ji-wook to gloat that he’s thankful for his help, and Ji-wook snarls reluctantly that he’s a little grateful. At Chief Bang’s disappointed sigh, he snaps, “A lot, a lot!â€

He finally gets his chance to talk to Hyun-soo, stopping to check in with Yoo-jung first. She reports that the tests showed no damage to Hyun-soo’s brain, but Ji-wook feels certain that Hyun-soo didn’t recognize him when they passed each other in that hallway.

SuspiciousPartner33-34-00167.jpg

He says this means that either Hyun-soo is suffering from dissociative amnesia (which is caused by extreme stress or emotional trauma), or he’s faking it. Yoo-jung says that the amnesia may have been triggered by guilt, but Ji-wook doesn’t believe that Hyun-soo is capable of feeling guilt.

When he’s finally allowed in the room, Hyun-soo seems eager to speak to him. Ji-wook watches Hyun-soo closely, and he certainly seems to have lost his memory, what with his expression open and his eyes wide and anxious. He pleads with Ji-wook to tell him what he did, but Ji-wook says that it won’t be easy to hear.

Frustrated, Hyun-soo turns to lean on the cabinet next to his bed. As Ji-wook watches him carefully, Hyun-soo slams his hand into the cabinet in an unsettling echo of the temper tantrum he had the time Ji-wook showed him the photo of his past assault victim.

SuspiciousPartner33-34-00221.jpg SuspiciousPartner33-34-00225.jpg

But this time, Hyun-soo apologizes, saying that he’s just upset because nobody will tell him anything. He tells Ji-wook that everybody just asks him what he remembers, but everyone refuses to answer his questions. He really does seem very worried and upset as he asks Ji-wook again to tell him who he is and what he did. Smiling at his outburst, Ji-wook says that even without his memory, he still seems to be the same Hyun-soo.

He tells Hyun-soo that he used to be his lawyer, and Hyun-soo is relieved, assuming that Ji-wook was on his side, and Ji-wook lets him think that for now. Just as Ji-wook is about to give Hyun-soo some answers, Yoo-jung comes in to say that his time is up.

  • Suspicious Partner: Episodes 35-36SuspiciousPartner35-36-00376.jpg

I just love how this show plays with the idea of memory, and how it can affect people in different ways. We’ve seen how memories can affect even someone like Hyun-soo, for better or for worse. As all of our characters prove, a person’s memory shapes who they are, and those memories are capable of turning them into a fighter for justice or a cold-blooded killer.

EPISODE 35 RECAP

After losing Hyun-soo at the hospital, Ji-wook tries to call Yoo-jung, only to learn that Hyun-soo injured her during his escape. He calls Eun-hyuk, who’s driving Bong-hee to the office, and both of them head back to see Yoo-jung.

Yoo-jung is fine with just a mild concussion, but Eun-hyuk is beyond frantic and he begs her loudly and dramatically to wake up. Heh, Yoo-jung is embarrassed by his histrionics and hisses at him to shut up as Ji-wook and Bong-hee slink away.

Ji-wook says that he feels guilty for not anticipating that Hyun-soo would make a run for it, and Bong-hee wonders if Hyun-soo regained his memory. Ji-wook thinks he did, but he says there’s no way to know exactly how much he remembers. In light of the danger, he asks Bong-hee to come back to his house for the time being, but she declines and promises to be careful.

SuspiciousPartner35-36-00060.jpg SuspiciousPartner35-36-00062.jpg

Eun-hyuk is still fussing over Yoo-jung like a mother hen as he takes her home from the hospital. Ji-hae sees them with their arms draped over each other, and from her perspective, they look like a very close couple.

Eun-hyuk doesn’t intend to go into Yoo-jung’s apartment, but she steps inside without her purse, so he follows her nervously. She collapses on the couch and says wearily that she hopes she goes to sleep and never wakes up, embarrassed about losing Hyun-soo. Eun-hyuk ends up staying until she falls asleep, then leaves after covering her with a blanket.

Ji-wook paces, trying to figure out just how much Hyun-soo probably remembers. He lists the people Hyun-soo has met since waking up: Ji-wook, Yoo-jung, and Bong-hee. It’s torture to Ji-wook, not knowing how far back Hyun-soo’s current memory extends.

SuspiciousPartner35-36-00072.jpg

He asks himself if Hyun-soo recalls the murders he committed and his purpose for committing them. One thing he does know is that Hyun-soo remembers someone he went to school with, since he stole their photo from his old yearbook. It’s Bong-hee’s true identity in particular that’s bothering Hyun-soo, because she feels familiar to him, but he still can’t recall exactly who she is. He caresses his lost girl So-young’s yearbook photo, wondering why he killed those people and what he was trying to finish.

Two days after Hyun-soo’s escape, Yoo-jung’s boss is furious about the public’s opinion that by not watching the suspect properly, the district attorney’s office is now expending a lot of manpower trying to capture him again. He orders Yoo-jung to take a leave of absence, telling Ji-hae to do the same. Frustrated by Ji-wook and Bong-hee’s mopey moods, the guys all bravely promise to catch Hyun-soo themselves if he shows up around them. Ji-wook suddenly remembers Hyun-soo saying on the bridge that he wants Ji-wook to feel how he feels before he tossed out a casual comment that he’ll just have to “kill them all†to make Ji-wook understand.

He barks at them to stop making jokes, directing them to keep themselves safe no matter what.

SuspiciousPartner35-36-00111.jpg SuspiciousPartner35-36-00108.jpg

Hyun-soo takes another flower to his old school, and as he looks at So-young’s photo, a flash of memory returns. He sees So-young running from someone through a field of tall grass, glancing behind her in terror. The memory shakes him deeply.

Ji-wook and Bong-hee visit the school, since Ji-wook is certain that Hyun-soo will come here in an attempt to recover more of his memory. He tells Bong-hee that he’ll probably visit the places where he killed his victims next. They leave the campus, and behind them, Hyun-soo watches them go.

SuspiciousPartner35-36-00120.jpg SuspiciousPartner35-36-00121.jpg

He has another quick flash of memory, this time of seeing Bong-hee standing on her balcony the night that he first saw her. He stares after her now, whispering, “Who are you?â€

Bong-hee stays at Ji-wook’s late that night to finish up some work. Growing sleepy, she makes a cup of coffee, but on her way back to her desk, she senses something that makes her blood run cold. She turns slowly to see Hyun-soo sitting in a chair just a few feet away.

Upset, he asks, “Who are you?†Bong-hee says that she should be asking why he’s here, but Hyun-soo just moans that his head hurts, sounding like he’s in agony as he explains that she’s the first person he saw when he woke up but his head keeps telling him to get rid of her.

SuspiciousPartner35-36-00147-1.jpg SuspiciousPartner35-36-00140-1.jpg

He asks Bong-hee if she knows why, but then he suddenly remembers seeing her on her balcony more clearly. He hears his own voice growling, “I must make sure she can’t talk.â€

Frustrated and confused, Hyun-soo lurches towards Bong-hee, telling her to answer his question. He grows more agitated as he repeats over and over, “Who are you? What are you? What am I? Tell me who I am. Why am I like this??â€

Bong-hee calmly tells him that it’s because she witnessed his killing. While Hyun-soo tries to process this, she throws a stack of papers at him, then knocks him down with a taekwondo kick. She lands a few punches before he throws her into the desk and raises a heavy box to smash down on her head.
