I'm australian and I've heard exchange students and such praise our accents but sometimes when I speak I can just hear the crappy bogan australian accent and I absolutely cringe. I'm from the southern states of the US, so my accent sounds incredibly harsh sometimes. It's frustrating because I know my accent is not nearly as strong as other southern accents, but I still have a hard time pronouncing certain words or learning new languages because of it. These days I don't care for it much and sometimes speak in a thick accent. In my previous workfield talking with an accent was impossible so I turned it off there as well. Am I embarrassed of it?
