Tribute to old pop stars

I suspect that I am the oldest member at OH, so I will tribute my favorite pop stars from late 70s and from 80s who started career (or solo career) on my eyes. And sadly many of them are already passed away.

1976 - Boney M - track "Sunny" from debut album "Take The Heat Off Me"

1979 - Gotta Go Home

1984 - Kalimba De Luna

1979 - Michael Jackson - track "Don’t Stop 'Til You Get Enough" from album "Off the wall" (considered as first solo album released under MJ brand)

Of course album "Thriller" made him wide world star. But since all knows it well I will put another track I appreciate.

1995 - Scream - MJ shows once again his killer dance skills

1979 - Eruption - track "One Way Ticket"

1980 - Ottawan - title track "D.I.S.C.O." from debut album

1981 - Hands Up

1982 - Secret Service (Swedish group, one of many from Swedish wave started by ABBA) - track "Flash In The Night"

1982 - F.R. David - track "Words don't come easy" from debut album "Words"

1982 - Pick Up The Phone

1984 - Cyndi Lauper - track "Time After Time" from debut album "She`s So Unusual"

1986 - True Colors

1984 - Sade - track "Smooth Operator" from debut album "Diamond Life"

1992 - No Ordinary Love

1992 - Cherish The Day

1992 - Feel No Pain

2000 - King Of Sorrow

1985 - A-ha (another Swedish group) - track "Take On Me" from debut album "Hunting High and Low"

1985 - title track "Hunting High and Low" from same album

1990 - Crying In The Rain

1985 - Whitney Houston - track "All at once" from debut album "Whitney Houston"

1990 - I'm Your Baby Tonight - my favorite

1987 - George Michael - track "One More Try" from first solo album "Faith" (after he left the Wham!)

1987 - Kissing A Fool - I love jazz so

1990 - Freedom - funky tune and super models at the peak of their careers

1992 - Too funky - again funk and models

1991 - Papa was a rolling stone - that clip was a shock, a revelation - I failed to find full original version, only this

2002 - Freek - sexy sound, sexy video

1988 - Kylie Minogue - track "Love At First Sight" from debut album "Kylie"

https://youtu.be/qGlTlnPZmiY?t=1s

1994 - Confide In Me

1994 - Put Yourself in My Place

I am sure I already forgot some names.

PS One from 1990 (because I love these guys) - Deee-Lite - track "Groove Is In The Heart"

Don't know any of these people besides Michael Jackson

Even Madonna? I am not surprised. It happens all the time - you get older and newer generation is not aware of your idols. Someday you will meet persons who will only shrug on the artists you call.

Edit: And of course every new generation is sure that their (new) artists are true geniuses while old artists are trash. And of course in reality new artists take some value from old ones and create their own value - which is permanent process.

Ok. Let me continue (and finish) with 90s. These bands/artists were very popular back then (will post only ones I like):

The KLF (actually debuted in 1988 but I love their music)

https://youtu.be/frIUgilfsWA?t=1s

https://youtu.be/M5z4kR7bZPI?t=1s

Seal (debuted in 1990)

Beats International (debuted in 1990)

Snap! (debuted in 1990)

2 Unlimited (debuted in 1991)

Dr. Alban (debuted in 1991)

M People (debuted in 1991)

Haddaway (debuted in 1992)

Sheryl Crow (debuted in 1992)

Real 2 Real (debuted in 1992)
(strong NSFW warning! world went crazy when this track was released - this shit is a genius` work)

The Prodigy (debuted in 1992)

E-Type (debuted in 1993)

Corona (debuted in 1993)

Stakka Bo (debuted in 1993)

Ace of Base (debuted in 1993)

La Bouche (debuted in 1994)

E-Rotic (debuted in 1994)

https://youtu.be/387PiIvJT4s?t=1s

(NSFW and I would say 18+)

Mo-Do (debuted in 1994)

Aqua (debuted in 1996)

Pop music of 2000s is not so interesting to me, and anyway I know much less about it.

No Depeche Mode? I'm disappointed!

Be not - Depeche Mode simply is not in a pop genre in my eyes. I was trying to stay in dance music book.

But sure I remember their first tracks leaked to our audio cassettes. Tracks were very interesting. They created a huge wave of fans in our generation.

Well they've spanned many genres so you can make arguments for putting then in all kinds of places I guess. They're my favourite band still, seeing them yet again in June :)

They are always bigger then one genre. My fav album is "Ultra" - so dark and intense.

Btw, back then most devoted DM fans (who adopted distinct hair style and dresses) frequently had clashes with aggressive fans of heavy metal  (also with their own style of hair and dresses).

I just checked your profile; you're five years younger than I am.

That said, I'd like to add Thomas Dolby (debuted 1982; currently a professor at Johns Hopkins)

Non-dance-music favorites, none of whom would have passed their Korean idol auditions:

The Ramones (debuted 1976; all deceased)

Elvis Costello (debuted 1977)

Steven Page (solo debut 2010)

I don`t know why but it was sad (a little) - to be oldest one here. So I am glad I am not.

I remember Thomas Dolby in one of Pink Floyd`s "The wall" performances.

And first time I saw Ramones in BBC`s documentary series "Seven ages of rock" in episode about punk rock. In that same episode I was deeply amazed learning that Sex Pistols managed to release only one album but helped to create huge wave nevertheless.

I will not post about musicians of rock, jazz, electronic, folk music. They are too many.
