[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Whisper" Episode 4

photo835962.jpg

There is justice in the world after all, or at least the world of Park Kyeong-soo. Dong-joon gets a rude awakening about his importance in Taebaek which changes the terms of his collaboration with Yeong-joo. The newly discovered deadly lover duo gets serious with its scheming and spares no one in order to protect their better half. With Yeong-joo's identity compromised, the time has come for alliances to be reassessed.

Ah the sweet sound of tables turning. Dong-joon (Lee Sang-yoon) discovering that he is not Taebaek's golden boy is quite cathartic. I am surprised it took him this long to figure out that he is only a glorified groom and a pawn, but I suppose that is part of being blinded with power. Taebaek supposedly needed him for his clean reputation and he failed to realize that joining hands with them he killed off his only power.

photo835961.jpgphoto835960.jpg

From a writing point of view, his lashing out over this betrayal kicks the power games off in a more exciting manner. Yeong-joo (Lee Bo-young) lacks access and connections, which means that she has not been able to raise the stakes of this battle enough on her own. She has been blackmailing her only lifeline, but has been lacking the necessary force to really make her opponents aside from Dong-joon sweat. Now that he is invested, she has the tool she needs.

Speaking of said tool, I do want to see Dong-joon's reaction now that Yeong-joo has nothing to threaten him with. I do not see why he would be inclined to help her now, unless she is smart and has made several copies of the video. Given she did not even plan for the material to be released in the event of her incarceration, however, it seems the writer does not really want their heroine to be the sharpest pencil in the box.

As for the rest of the villains, I wish Soo-yeon (Park Se-yeong) and Jeong-il (Kwon Yul) had a bit more to their personalities worth the emotional investment needed to enjoy their Romeo and Juliet plight. Choi Il-hwan's (Kim Kap-soo) obsession and inferiority complex against Kim Yoo-taek (Kim Hong-pa) feels like an element created to raise some pity for the evil couple, but I wish their own development helped.

That being said, we are still in the beginning of this series. If what we know about our characters so far is only an introductory look at their bare dramatic essentials, then this is a good enough start. I cannot imagine where the story will go unless things keep happening that push the leads together out of necessity, but at least this gives me enough curiosity to raise my anticipation.

DRAMA REACTIONS & REVIEWS
Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

wwwhisp.jpg

Maybe it’s just me and not dramaland, and my problem is that I’ve just lost that lovin’ feeling. Maybe it’s not the fault of the drama offerings, because it seems that a number of shows are doing pretty well these days, but I’m back to feeling the drag. Now I know why family dramas do so well, because although I feel like they’re among the less fresh, creative, and exciting stories in K-drama (along with morning and daily serials), in my current slump they’re the only type of show I have the energy to follow. Not because they’re better, but because they’re easy and familiar, and once you get past the first couple episodes of setup, you don’t have to put in much mental effort to keep following along. Maybe one of these days I’ll feel excited and sucked back into the wonderful world of miniseries, but for now, it’s the family sagas that keep me watching. â€“javabeans

Whisper: Twisted. It was an eventful premiere—a little TOO eventful at times, with so many things happening so fast that it was hard to get my bearings at first—but I’m definitely sucked in by Lee Bo-young’s hard-edged character and her blinding anger at the injustice of the world. Everyone in the cast seems to have good angry chemistry with everyone else, so while it’s not a happy drama, the tension is simmering all around in a good way. But was anyone else disappointed that everyone switched careers after one episode?? I wanted a cop and a judge fighting against the corrupt system, not everyone and their father working at the One Law Firm to Rule Them All.

Legal thriller 'Whisper' adds more ground, solidifies lead

AEN20170405003800315_01_i.jpg&key=753bae

SEOUL, April 5 (Yonhap) -- SBS TV's legal thriller "Whisper" gained further ground to solidify its lead in the Monday-Tuesday late night TV race, data showed Wednesday. Tuesday's night's episode four of "Whisper" recorded 15 percent viewership nationwide, according to Nielsen Korea. Ratings for in and around the Seoul area stood at 16.7 percent.

MBC TV's period series "Rebel: Thief Who Stole The People" came second, with 12.5 percent and KBS 2TV's "Ms. Perfect" came third, with 5.6 percent. Starring actress Lee Bo-young, "Whisper" debuted at No. 1 on March 27 on the heels of the success of preceding show "Defendant."

Lee plays Shin Young-joo, a homicide detective who seeks revenge on Lee Dong-joon, a corrupt judge played by Lee Sang-yoon, who wrongfully convicts her father of murder. Throughout her quest, Shin ends up falling in love with her nemesis.

But it wasn't without competition, as "Rebel," in a heated race, took over the lead the following day.

The first three episodes of "Whisper" were panned by TV critics, many of whom saw character and plot developments as being half baked and boring, while lead star Lee's acting was received as cringe-inducing and overdramatic.

But the latest episode seemed to free itself from what many saw as plain boredom, while better defining and highlighting the series' core conflict structure between Lee and Lee Sang-yoon's character.

This composite photo captured from SBS TV's legal thriller "Whisper" shows highlights from the show's fourth episode. (Yonhap)

DRAMA RECAPS
Whisper: Episode 3

jLwYTuA.jpg

Dong-joon continues to deal with the relentless push-and-pull of everyone demanding something from him, yet no one cares to listen to what he wants — not that there’s a place for truth and justice in this world of greed and power, anyway. If he’s going to learn to survive in this new life he’s been suddenly thrown into, then he’s going to have to learn to play just as dirty as everyone else does.

EPISODE 3 RECAP

Jung-il enters the restaurant to meet with Sang-gu, who notes with mild surprise that he was expecting someone else. Namely, Soo-yeon, who calls him just then to warn him that it’s a trap. Wait, I thought Dong-joon cancelled his voicemail warning her about the trap. Sang-gu grabs the waitress and threatens to harm her unless she tells him what’s going on, and she nervously glances at the hidden camera that Young-joo set up.

Sang-gu throws a bottle against the camera, and watching from her video feed, Young-joo realizes in annoyance that her trap is ruined. As he stands to leave, Sang-gu tells Jung-il that he’s gotten his hands dirty cleaning up after Taebaek — now he wants to know who will clean up after him. He declares loyalty to whomever will support him.

As Young-joo watches the men leave the restaurant, she recognizes Jung-il. Just then, Dong-joon gets a call from his wife, who tells him that friends get closer when they share secrets, which means that the two of them must have just gotten closer, too.

He goes to meet her at the fishing site where Sung-shik died. He asks how involved she is in the case — did simply order his death, or did actually kill him herself? Cutting him off, she quotes Hebrews 10:19: “Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus,†adding that Dong-joon now has the right to enter Taebaek thanks to the blood shed by Sung-shik.

He can’t believe her casual attitude and earnestly reminds her that they’re standing on the spot where someone was killed. She just smiles, telling him that he was the one who manipulated the trial. He protests that he had no choice, and she muses that married couples do start to resemble each other after all, because neither did she have a choice.

She then reveals that Jung-il is looking into who’s behind Sung-shik’s death. She’s relieved that Jung-il arrived at the restaurant before she could, but then reiterates that if she is taken down, her father and Dong-joon will also be dragged down with her.

DRAMA RECAPS
Whisper: Episode 4

4R3BAtg.jpg

I’m not sure how each episode manages to continuously accelerate the intensity and intrigue, especially since we started off running full speed through Taebaek’s sticky web. You’d think someone would finally get caught and actually suffer consequences for their actions, but despite the best efforts, everyone — including the heroes (or should I say, anti-heroes?) — is slick enough to somehow slip through. Or at least make sure that someone else is more caught they they are.

EPISODE 4 RECAP

Dong-joon struggles with being drugged by Sang-gu and with the realization that Jung-il and Soo-yeon have been secretly lovers. Or maybe not-so-secret, since a few months ago their respective fathers told them to end their relationship. Lawyer Choi reminds her the promise she made with him that day to break up with Jung-il, but Soo-yeon tells him that she’s fulfilling an even earlier promise she made, which is to stay with Jung-il forever.

At the club, Jung-il smugly tells Dong-joon that he should just give up — it’s not like anyone is coming to save him. The police will be here soon to arrest him for illegal drug abuse, and the reporters will immediately make the scandal front page news. Ah, but there is someone coming to save him, but Jung-il slips out of the club and doesn’t see Young-soo enter.

She barges into the room, telling Sang-gu that she’s there for Dong-joon, but he’s passed out. Ha, Sang-gu recognizes her as the one who beat him up in order to take her father’s phone, and tells her that the only people Dong-joon will be leaving with are the police. Taking matters into her own hands, she leaps across the table and pins Sang-gu down, force feeding him the leftover drugs. She tells him that he’ll be arrested for illegal drug use, too, if they don’t let Dong-joon go.

Angry about the trap his daughter has set for Dong-joon, Lawyer Choi orders his secretary to get in touch with all their high-ranking connections in law force. But Soo-yeon tells him that he should stay out of it. This is something that is strictly between her and Dong-joon.

At Dong-joon’s mother’s nursing home, one of their patients is in critical condition. She’s trying to figure out how to move him to an emergency care center when Dong-joon’s father arrives. Mom attends to the dying patient, reassuring the old man that his son will be by soon to see him. But Dad points out that per the visitor’s log, the old man’s family hasn’t visited him in three years. It’s not like they’re going to magically appear in the next hour. Mom looks distraught as she watches Dad stick a syringe in the old man’s arm, but she doesn’t stop him as he assists the man into death.

Dong-joon also gets a syringe in his arm, but it’s to help ease the effect of the drug. Young-joo’s managed to get away from the club and to the safety of an old friend’s apartment. Her friend is the real Jo Yeon-hwa, which explains how Young-joo got her hands on her false identity. The real Yeon-hwa is also a doctor and attends to Dong-joon before she leaves for her shift at the hospital.
