Whisper: Episode 13

whisper1300241.jpg

Thanks to the presidential election pre-emptions, there’s only one episode this week of our usual dose of corrupt cat-and-mouse games. But at least it’s a good one full of intrigue and surprises — although by now we shouldn’t be quite so surprised when someone else gets the upper hand. After all, it isn’t Whisper if there isn’t a little backstabbing as everyone attempts to usurp the king of Taebaek.

EPISODE 13 RECAP

Dong-joon runs into Jung-il in the lobby of Taebaek, where Jung-il informs him that he’s returning from his father’s grave and he’s made sure to find a place for Lawyer Choi’s grave as well. Dong-joon muses that Jung-il’s anger at losing his father is understandable, but it seems he’s lost any sense of guilt for killing Sung-shik. Jung-il tells him that he’s sure it’s buried deep inside, and Dong-joon offers to take that heavy burden from him. The words are polite — the meaning, not so much. With a glance at Soo-yeon as she and her assistant leaving the building, Jung-il tells hm that Dong-joon’s shot at Lawyer Choi merely winged him, but Jung-il’s aiming for his heart. Taebaek’s managed to bury the case around Secretary Song, largely thanks to Soo-yeon’s efforts, who visits him at the police station. She’s there to offer him a deal if he keeps quiet about what really happened the night Chairman Kang was killed. She’ll minimize the embezzlement charge, instead calling the money he stole as his “severance pay.â€

Soo-yeon stops by Young-joo’s desk, and the other woman looks up at her nonchalantly, telling her that she’ll talk to her as a witness after she’s finished investigating Secretary Song. Soo-yeon reminds her that any investigation without evidence is unreasonable, and as Young-joo’s phone rings, she also reminds her that the Chief of Police is under Taebaek influence. Young-joo ignores the call from her boss, pointing out that it’s difficult putting people who are above the law, under the law. Soo-yeon just smirks and tells her to try it according to the law. After all, Taebaek has 800 lawyers — does Young-joo think she can take on everyone of them by herself?

When Soo-yeon returns to Taebaek, she organizes a team to tackle the case. They’ll make sure that there are no press leaks about Secretary Song’s embezzlement because it will tarnish the company’s reputation. She also mobilizes some of the attorneys to look into the prosecution and judges of the case to see if they can prevent it going to trial and get Secretary Song out on bail.

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

unnamed-2-1.jpg

So many interesting new shows to catch, and barely enough time to fit them all in! It was a struggle to keep up this week with three new shows to catch, but I was too interested in all of them to consider letting any fall by the wayside. Was your week chock-full of shows, or are you waiting for the next wave to bring in new offerings? â€“javabeans

girlfriday :: At this point I’m just in this to see the villains get their comeuppance. I suppose that’s not negligible in a drama about corruption, but I just wish there were more keeping me emotionally invested in the whole thing.

gummimochi :: Oh man, people are out for blood. I thought along the same lines as Jung-il when Soo-yeon tried to entrap him with a bloodied white shirt, since it never seems like Soo-yeon puts a great deal of thought into her plans. But it was a nice twist that she had a backup plan that made the hair on the back of his neck stand on edge. I find it mildly hilarious that Young-joo and Dong-joon hash out their most badassery plans inside a Subway, but honestly, I love them so much that I don’t care where they meet, as long as they’re together.

tineybeanie :: You know what would have been awesome? If Ji Sung had played Dong-joon instead. I like Lee Sang-yoon a lot, and I think the chemistry between the two leads is cute, if not sizzling hot. But think about it, the plots have very similar arcs: Defendant and Whisper both have an unjustly framed and cornered man of the law, and only one woman believes in them. But Whisper has the vastly more kickass heroine, and Defendant has a hero who is capable of unfurrowing his eyebrows once in a while. Thus, this is me wishing a real life couple would go inhabit dramaworld together.

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Whisper" Episode 14

photo849480.jpg

Things are getting complicated and tiresome for everyone involved as Il-hwan's arrest makes Jeong-il the next target for our heroes. Our villain fights tooth and nail for his safety and that means trying to out-bid Dong-joon for Soo-yeon's good will. Soo-yeon on the other hand is after the safety of Taebaek for the sake of her father and her choices are limited.

I have rarely seen such a busy case of villains changing alliances like underwear. This time around it is Soo-yeon (Park Se-yeong) who finds herself between a rock and a hard place and there really is no easy way out of it. This is great to see, however, because she has already lost and choosing who backstabs her is a fitting punishment for all that she had done. Not that I would not welcome jail time as well, but this is a good start.

photo849479.jpgphoto849478.jpg

One thing I particularly like about the episode is that it remains consistent with Il-hwan (Kim Kap-soo). I have seen the miraculous repentance and forgiving of crimes from Korean drama on account of someone's parenthood enough to worry. "Whisper" did not excuse or change Ho-beom (Kim Chang-wan) and now Il-hwan follows suit. His confession is for his company, not Soo-yeon. In fact, he specifically asks for her sacrifices to keep those afloat.

Jeong-il (Kwon Yul) does not get a free pass either. His revenge only goes as far as his personal interest. I have to say, however, that I still lament the lack of good villains here. I wish we had people who know loyalty and love, but who also do horrible things. Soo-yeon is the closest to that, but the series has not explored her thoughts enough. Since she stands to gain by saving Taebaek, we are also not sure how much of it is for her own future, rather than her father's company.

photo849477.jpgphoto849476.jpg

Speaking of relationships, I am pleased to see the leads' romance happen naturally. Their connection will surely be used against them at some point, but at least there is no drama within the relationship. I do wish their early abuse toward each other had been addressed, however. Dong-joon (Lee Sang-yoon) has done his part, but the rape has not even been mentioned again.

Regardless of what shadows lie in the past, it is the ones currently being created that inject suspense back into the series. Dong-joon might pay dearly for his crimes, but I feel that can happen without the ending being too sad for audiences. After all, he played his part in this mess. Whether he finds a way out or goes down with the ship, he is finally someone I can get behind.

Whisper: Episode 14

whisper1400109.jpg

With the head of Taebaek under official investigation for murder, there’s a desperate race to see who will fill his shoes and lead the company. Everyone has their own motives to gain control of Taebaek, but only those who are the most persuasive — or those best at blackmail — will settle into the lofty granite office. There’s also finally a hint of romance between our heroic leads, proving that the greatest aphrodisiac is dismantling the foundations of powerful corruption.

EPISODE 14 RECAP

Young-joo arrests Lawyer Choi, although technically he’s just being detained under suspicion. Soo-yeon rushes to Jung-il, insisting he get down to the station to testify before a warrant is officially issued. She’s convinced she can find a way to discredit Doctor Dad and Driver Park’s statements, but Jung-il reveals that Dong-joon has already met with the chief prosecutor who was with Jung-il the night his father was killed. No one would now believe any alibi he would create on Lawyer Choi’s behalf. After Lawyer Choi is sent to a holding cell, Young-joo and Dong-joon plan their next move — a way to link Jung-il and Soo-yeon to the case. Secretary Song knows exactly how Soo-yeon is involved, and offers up his knowledge in return for a light sentence for his embezzlement.

Turns out Soo-yeon recently cashed out two funds to repay the money that Secretary Song stole, and as Young-joo orders her team to look into it, Dong-joon sends them a fancy box of fresh sushi for lunch. She warns him that it could be considered bribery, but he says that the bribery act doesn’t pertain to a person’s loved one. Ooooh, smooth. When Dong-joon returns home, he finds Soo-yeon in full PR damage control. He tells her that she should get some rest — he’ll take care of the family and company. But she warns him that her father will be released and return to work tomorrow. She blames him for her father’s arrest, but he reminds her that Young-joo has also lost a father. It’s about time Soo-yeon felt what it’s like to lose someone, too.

whisper1400370.jpg whisper1400353.jpg

In the morning, Soo-yeon returns to the police station, ignoring the crowd of reporters shouting questions at her. She’s been able to convince the news stations to reveal the video of Secretary Song moving the body and being arrested to embezzlement, with the intention of making it look like he was the one who killed Chairman Kang.

But Young-joo is already prepared for her, thanks to Secretary Song’s intel. Not only is she able to prove that Soo-yeon cashed out a couple of accounts to repay the money Secretary Song stole, but she also has written statements from the Taebaek employees that were ordered by Soo-yeon to track down any cars with blackboxes from that night.

whisper1400524.jpg whisper1400485.jpg

Attorney Jo runs to Jung-il’s office to update him that Soo-yeon is now considered a suspect, but Jung-il is momentarily confused because he knows she’s not the real target. Dong-joon made it clear that he’s out to get Lawyer Choi and Jung-il. Dong-joon also knows that Jung-il is still determined to be in charge of Taebaek, and idly wonders if that was the only reason Jung-il got together with Soo-yeon in the first place. Maybe that’s also why he’s so angry that his father was killed, since he lost another way for him to get control of the law firm. In the interrogation room, Young-joo muses that Soo-yeon is in a difficult spot. If Secretary Song is arrested for murder, Soo-yeon will be considered his accomplice. She also can’t let her father be accused of murder, either.

But Soo-yeon has the video of Jung-il’s confession that he killed Sung-shik — it could make a useful bargaining tool. Young-joo knows she must have something on him, since she was able to convince Jung-il to make up an alibi for her father — the same person who killed his father.
