Whisper: Episode 9

whisper0900665.jpg

In the world of Taebaek, it’s all fun and Machiavellian games until someone gets hurt. Every side is desperate to persuade Sang-gu to be loyal to them, but it will cost them more than just money — in order to save one’s future, one must destroy the past. Unless, of course, that past is the reason someone has a future at all.

EPISODE 9 RECAP

Both Lawyer Choi and Chairman Kang spring into action as they call in all their powerful legal and political connections to make sure Soo-yeon’s video confession will either be used as evidence against Jung-il (per Lawyer Choi) or be thrown out (per Chairman Kang). Meanwhile, Attorney Jo freaks out because they need Sang-gu in order to have any leverage against Soo-yeon’s testimony. Jung-il studies an old photo of him and Soo-yeon from happier days, then throws it into the trash as he tells Attorney Jo to contact Sang-gu. Knowing that Jung-il will be wanted to meet with Sang-gu, Soo-yeon’s assistant points out that they’ll need to get to him first. As they round the corner of the hallway, they come face-to-face with Jung-il and Attorney Jo.

whisper0900054.jpg whisper0900055.jpg

Staring straight into Jung-il’s eyes, she tells her assistant to contact Sang-gu and ask him how her husband was hurt that night on the docks. She’s sure that whomever paid Sang-gu to hurt Dong-joon is also the one who killed Sung-shik. When Young-joo returns to Taebaek to meet with Dong-joon, he tells her in frustration that everything was taken care of. Her father will be proven innocent and she’ll be reinstated as a detective. But it’s a small victory when Lawyer Choi, Chairman Kang, and Jung-il still have all the power. She wonders if Dong-joon’s refusal to begin a war that he can’t win is rooted in fear or wisdom. In return, he wonders if her determination to fight is due to naïveté or recklessness. She retorts that he probably only wanted to make sure her father was declared innocent so he could clear his conscience due to compromising his principles.

Ki-yong arrives with a couple of detectives who are there to arrest Young-joo for forging documents. But Dong-joon holds out a hand and stops them from putting the handcuffs on her, insisting that he’ll first need to investigate if they have the authority to arrest her without a warrant. He immediately goes to Lawyer Choi’s office, who says that it will be beneficial for Young-joo to spend a few years in jail. It will get her out of the way while they deal with the situation at hand. Lawyer Choi orders Secretary Song to look into weaknesses of the judge and prosecutor overseeing Chang-ho’s case, so they can exploit and bribe the men to get control over the case. Dong-joon stubbornly insists that he’ll keep Young-joo by his side, and if Lawyer Choi tries to remove her, he’ll release the truth about who originally wrote the verdict in Chang-ho’s case. He vows that he’ll capture the true criminal and prosecute anyone who helped falsify evidence. He’ll stay at Taebaek; after all, he is Taebaek’s son-in-law — and Young-joo is his secretary.

whisper0900182.jpg whisper0900162.jpg

Lawyer Choi warns him that if Dong-joon goes against his wishes, then his father’s hospital will also be in jeopardy. Dong-joon simply tells him that what should fall, will fall, and then they can start anew.

By the time Dong-joon returns to his office, the detectives are on their way out — without Young-joo. With a determined expression, he tells Ki-yong he sent Chang-ho to jail to save himself. This time, he won’t make the same mistake. Looking directly at Young-joo, he adds that he will capture Lawyer Choi, Chairman Kang, and Jung-il. Seems like he’s made his decision to fight alongside her. Yay!

Pre-emptions in store for Chicago Typewriter, Rebel, Tunnel, Whisper

WhisperTunnel1.jpg

The South Korean presidential election is coming up in under two weeks, which means that this is probably just the first wave of drama pre-emptions in store for us. With debates and other election-related news specials popping up in the days leading up to the election, we have quite a few dramas already announcing programming changes. I know, it’s never good news for a drama addict! But on the upside, we’ll probably get a bunch of hilarious memes out of it.

SBS’s Whisper will be pre-empted on May 9 for Election Day. Producers are still considering a 1-episode extension for the series to make up for it, so I suppose in the case of Whisper, we might end up ahead. Unless the extension somehow causes the plot to derail completely, because the average ratio of betrayals to episodes is about 17:1.

Fingers crossed that there won’t be any more pre-emptions ahead.

Whisper: Episode 10

whisper1001179.jpg

A missing dead body may be yet another link to the case that’s consumed our leads since the beginning, and perhaps could even the final blow that will free them from Taebaek’s nefarious clutches. It’s just one more step in this continual battle to see who has more influence and power — those who wish to reveal the truth, or those who wish to hide it.

EPISODE 10 RECAP

Dong-joon runs into Jung-il in the Taebaek lobby, and Jung-il smugly points out that it’s only ten minutes until Chang-ho’s trial — there wouldn’t be a problem, now, would there? Dong-joon warns him that they’ll find Sang-gu, and Jung-il will not only be accused of murder, but of abducting a witness as well. Jung-il simply tells him that he’ll take good care of Sang-gu until Chang-ho dies (and thus the trial will be over).

Dong-joon vows that he’ll find Sang-gu and have him testify, but Jung-il leans in and whispers that Dong-joon should just give up. As he heads up to his office, Jung-il calls his father.

In the old Taebaek office, Young-joo cautiously approaches the Chairman Kang’s body to retrieve his ringing cell phone, but before she can pick it up, Secretary Song knocks her over the head with a heavy glass award that was sitting on a shelf. After she drops to the ground, unconscious, he picks up Chairman Kang’s phone and ignores Jung-il’s call. Jung-il finds it suspicious that his father isn’t answering.

Lawyer Choi returns to the sleek, shiny offices of the modern Taebaek, where he finds a worried Soo-yeon fretting over the fact that Secretary Song didn’t show up at the trial. Even though it means he hasn’t testified against them yet, she wonders if he could have filmed a confession like she did.

She worries what will happen if Secretary Song testifies against them, since it would mean Chairman Kang would take over Taebaek. As she starts to cry, she apologizes for how much she hated him because he wanted her to live the rest of her life the way he had planned and not how she wanted to live. Lawyer Choi pulls her into an embrace and reassures her that everything will be fine.

He reminds her that he was the one who saved Chairman Kang from going to prison during each new change in governmental leadership. He reassures her that, even if Taebaek was started from Chairman Kang’s money, he’s the one who’s built the powerful company from the ground up. He reassures her that he’s paid back Chairman Kang everything he’s owed him. Well, that’s one way of describing it.

Soo-yeon seems reassured, but she sees a blood stain on her father’s collar, which causes her to wonder about what really happened.

Jung-il is still trying to reach his father, but his calls aren’t going through. Soo-yeon enters his office to let him know that her video confession will apparently be released at the next trial, but she also knows they’re in a stalemate because he still has Sang-gu. She muses that it’s just like their lover’s quarrels back in America — neither of them liked to lose.

Attorney Jo bursts into the office, revealing that Chairman Kang’s missed his next appointment. He whispers to Jung-il, wondering if something’s happened to the chairman, and Soo-yeon starts to piece together her father’s statements, the blood on his collar, and the missing Chairman Kang. She looks sick as she wonders what her father has done.

whisper1000392.jpg

Back at the old office, Young-joo regains consciousness. But the office is empty — there’s only a faint trace of blood to show where the body was. Dong-joon calls her, worried that he couldn’t reach her for the past few hours and demanding to know what’s going on.Secretary Song returns to Taebaek, appearing a little stressed and disheveled as he wipes at his hands and brushes off his suit jacket. He looks like he’s seen a ghost when he sees Young-joo get on the elevator with him. He tries to hold in his reaction as they ride up together, but she just silently brushes at the stains on his cuffs. She knows that he was there when Chairman Kang was killed.

She reveals as much to Dong-joon, assuming that Lawyer Choi was the murderer and Secretary Song was the one who cleaned up the mess. Dong-joon is stunned that Lawyer Choi would kill someone, but Young-joo points out that this means Taebaek will collapse and Chairman Kang’s company will also disappear — Jung-il will have no support.

As the only eye-witness of the crime, she’s planning to go back to the scene to gather evidence (such as fingerprints, etc.) that will prove Lawyer Choi was there. Just then a news report reveals that there was a fire in the office building, destroying Taebaek’s old offices. Any hope for getting evidence is gone.

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Whisper" Episode 11

photo845142.jpg&key=961bcfd7e97f06769aaa

There is no friendship or loyalty between monsters and our villains are met with some tough decisions on which carrot to drop in favor of their survival. Jeong-il has to free his pursuer to trap Il-hwan and Il-hwan's enemies just keep piling up outside and inside of his doors. Yeong-joo and Dong-joon take some bold measures, but a very tough choice has to eventually be made for Yeong-joo's future.

I wish "Whisper" had pitted everyone against each other sooner, because there is much more excitement to be found in different sides with conflicting agenda and I feel more invested when the heroes stand more of a chance. Jeong-il (Kwon Yul) may have found a way out of his dilemma between maintaining his innocence and proving Yeong-joo's (Lee Bo-young), but now he will have two sides against his cause for his father.

Soo-yeon (Park Se-yeong) and Il-hwan (Kim Kap-soo) will also have two sides against them, but their power is formidable. I do wonder where Yoo-taek's (Kim Hong-pa) own company and supposed allies are, however. Have they all switched over to Il-hwan? Is no one worried about the ease with which he gets rid of those who no longer serve his purposes? On the other hand that is how the corrupt rich operate, so I suppose monsters feel comfortable among monsters.

Chang-ho's (Kang Shin-il) decision in light of these circumstances is understandable and it gives Yeong-joo another chance to live, but I wonder where it leaves Jeong-il's punishment. Even if the suspect has confessed and the case has been closed, can it not be reopened with sufficient evidence of a coerced confession? Security cameras in the clinic to capture Jeong-il's visit would have helped but then again this is fiction and nobody records crucial evidence when it would solve everything too quickly.

Aside from pitting the villains against each other and teasing Tae-gon's (Kim Hyeong-mook) fluctuating confidence in his allies, the episode handles Chang-ho and Yeong-joo's farewell and their selfless choices well. However, I do wish the burden placed on Yeong-joo as the daughter of a killer were something the series explored. It looks like Yeong-joo will be reinstated soon and that makes little sense given the stigma and her lack of connections.

I wish every episode of the series were as entertaining as this. Given we had to go through almost two thirds of a plot engaging in "writing foreplay" before getting to meaty content, I am very pleased about this. We now have more complicated relationship dynamics and more conflicting interests. This does not redeem the drama in my eyes, but I will be glad to see it end better than it started.

"Whisper" is directed by Lee Myeong-woo, written by Park Kyeong-soo and features Lee Bo-young, Lee Sang-yoon, Kwon Yul and Park Se-yeong.

Whisper: Episode 11

whisper1101523.jpg

Like father, like daughter. History repeats itself as the innocent Young-joo is framed for murder, but this time, Dong-joon has a chance to redeem himself in the fight for truth and justice. Of course, the lies and corruption are unceasing, and it will take a miracle for Young-joo to be freed from the tangled web that Lawyer Choi has so elaborately spun.

EPISODE 11 RECAP

Due to the discover of Chairman Kang’s body in her car, Young-joo is taken into custody as the most likely suspect. The news stations are buzzing with this information, which means everyone knows about it. Dong-joon races to the police station, taking control of the situation as Young-joo’s attorney. Once they’re given some privacy, he gently asks if she’s okay. She’s more focused on why Secretary Song moved the body, but instead he dabs at her raw wrists and bruised cheek — it doesn’t seem like it was a gentle arrest. He urges her to refuse to say anything to the detectives, since any statement she might make will get distorted and used against her by Lawyer Choi. Anything she needs to say, she can say it to him, her lawyer.

She doesn’t want her father to know, and even though Dong-joon was just at the nursing home where her father watched the breaking news, he reassures Young-joo that her father is in no condition to know what’s going on. He also promises her that he’ll make sure she’ll be free and able to be with her father in his last moments. As the detectives escort her away to her holding cell, he leans in and whispers: “Trust me.†It’s an ornate funeral for Chairman Kang, and Lawyer Choi leads the procession of guests to the memorial hall where Jung-il waits. He and Soo-yeon pay their respects to Chairman Kang while Jung-il stares them down, and then Lawyer Choi tells him that Soo-yeon will give the eulogy, since he knows Chairman Kang was fond of her. Um, that’s not exactly the word I’d use, but sure.

Jung-il simply says that he’s indebted to Lawyer Choi, and promises to repay that debt as soon as possible. He also tells Soo-yeon that he hopes she gives his father a nice eulogy, since he plans to do the same for her father. Despite the polite veneer, there’s a distinct threat behind his words. When Dong-joon arrives at the office the next morning, he’s determined to track down the original car Secretary Song used and find some trace that the body was in it. But Ki-yong reveals it’s already headed for the scrapheap. Secretary Song talks to his daughter who lives overseas, apologizing for waking her up. His apology sounds like it covers more than just forgetting the difference between time zones. Dong-joon finds him and reveals that a shard of the celadon vase was discovered at the scene, and idly wonders if Secretary Song could have been the one to smash the vase against Chairman Kang’s head.

Even if Young-joo is out of the picture, Secretary Song still has to deal with him — and he knows how persistent Dong-joon can be. Not only that, Lawyer Choi is the kind of person who will change tactics and make it so Secretary Song was the one holding the vase. Considering he was coerced into hiding the body, Dong-joon’s convinced Secretary Song could make a deal and be out of jail in just a few years. But when the two men enter Lawyer Choi’s office, it’s revealed that the one Lawyer Choi will threaten to destroy is Dong-joon himself. He’s ready to set him up as Young-joo’s accomplice. He reminds Dong-joon that his father has been the Choi family doctor for the past twenty years and it would be a pity if something happened to the doctor’s family. He orders Dong-joon to put a stop to things.

At the cemetery, Attorney Jo urges Jung-il to rest for a few days after they bury his father. But Jung-il, with fire in his eyes, is determined to return to work right away. He knows that Dong-joon will be working hard to prove Young-joo’s innocence. Since the original car has already been destroyed, Dong-joon is now looking for copies of the blackbox videos from cars that would have also been parked there that night. Young-joo has already figured out that Dong-joon is being painted as her accomplice, and she muses that he must be feeling regret. He admits that he is — he regrets that he didn’t originally listen to Chang-ho’s voice of conscience. He regrets that he didn’t join her side earlier. With a smile, he says that he may be in trouble, but at least now his heart is at ease.

Young-joo points out that it won’t be easy for him to get records of the cars that were parked there that night, or figure out who owns the cars without the police’s help. She wonders what he’ll be able to do without her. Then she points out that they can just make others do the work for them, and she casually knocks his notes off the table as the detective inters the interrogation room.

As the detective picks up the piece of paper to return it to Dong-joon, he reads the notes that indicate they’ll be tracking down the blackboxes. He then reports back to Lawyer Choi, who reminds everyone that they still have the perfect set-up of Young-joo killing Chairman Kang in retaliation for Jung-il killing Sung-shik and framing her father. He’s using them against each other to clear his name.

whisper1101176.jpg

Jung-il returns to Taebaek, and his first stop is Lawyer Choi’s office. He’s prepared a small “thank you†gift for everything Lawyer Choi did during the funeral. It’s a vase exactly like the one Lawyer Choi used to kill Chairman Kang, but Lawyer Choi hides any reaction and simply says that this one must be authentic, since he heard his father was going to give him the real vase for his office.

Whisper: Episode 12

whisper1200779.jpg&key=8e0957fa50f3e5d46

Young-joo and Dong-joo’s partnership only grows stronger as they work together to try and reveal the truth about Chairman Kang’s death. Jung-il also wants the truth to be known, and will do whatever takes to see Lawyer Choi removed from his Taebaek fortress. But Lawyer Choi’s formidable power means he won’t be easy to trap, even as Secretary Song’s loyalty begins to crumble.

EPISODE 12 RECAP

Dong-joon attends Chang-ho’s memorial and finds only Young-joo there. She sadly tells him that hardly anyone has stopped by — not even friends and relatives. She worries that there won’t be enough people to carry her father’s coffin, but Dong-joon volunteers himself, Ki-yong, and anyone else he’ll be able to find. He wonders if it would be appropriate for him (the one who originally sentenced Chang-ho and started all this mess) to carry Chang-ho to his final resting place. But Young-joo wants him to carry her father’s coffin, since even those who her father was close to don’t want to have anything to do with the funeral — she was even told that his hometown doesn’t want him buried there. All because people don’t want to be associated with a supposed murderer. This is all weighing heavy in his mind when he later has breakfast with his in-laws. He tells his mother-in-law that this morning he will say grace. Instead of bowing his head and closing his eyes, he looks directly at Lawyer Choi and says that, even though God said to love your enemies and leave vengeance to the Lord, he’s unable to do so. He vows to do everything he can to revenge the righteous man.

Later, in her father’s office, Soo-yeon wonders what Dong-joon could be thinking. Lawyer Choi tells her not to worry about it, because Dong-joon can’t possibly have any ammunition against them. Besides, he’s planning to quietly kick Dong-joon out of Taebaek as soon as the time is right. More important to focus on now is Jung-il, who will surely make his move soon since he’s been cleared of any suspicion of murder. Lawyer Choi advises Soo-yeon to hide behind her father, since if Jung-il tries to take a shot at them, then he’ll fall as well. After all, his father’s company and Taebaek have been so entwined the last thirty years that if Jung-il attempts to destroy Taebaek, he’ll end up destroying his father’s company as well. Lawyer Choi’s confidence doesn’t last long, since Secretary Song rushes in to turn on the TV, revealing Jung-il giving a press conference where he promises to donate his father’s entire multi-billion dollar company to the government. Not only that, he’s requesting an official audit of the company’s activities since it was founded so that the country can praise his father’s note-worthy actions — or punish any wrong-doings.

Soo-yeon confronts Jung-il, pointing out that if he allows his father’s company to be audited, then everyone will find out about his father’s corruption. But Jung-il is more focused on the fact that it will also mean Lawyer Choi’s corruption will be revealed.

whisper1200382.jpg

He’s fully prepared to throw away his father’s business to destroy Lawyer Choi, especially since he plans to take over Taebaek when Lawyer Choi is out of the picture. He reminds her of the wine bottle they last emptied, and that he plans to fill it with something — either her tears or her father’s blood. But Soo-yeon says that he’ll have to fill it with his own tears or blood. She’s not going to give up her father without a fight. Dong-joon watches Young-joo sprinkle her father’s ashes alongside the lake. The only other people in attendance are Chang-ho’s grieving widow and Yeon-hwa. He then arrives at a restaurant where his step-brother Dong-min is celebrating his birthday with his mother and Dong-joon’s father. He hands over his birthday present — an investigative report into the plastic surgery center that details all the irregularities and corruption that went into establishing the center.
