[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Whisper" Episode 8

photo840351.jpg&key=e72903fb0be51b573a1f

The hinted rift between our lovebird antagonists cannot stop expanding and it is aided by Yeong-joo and Dong-joon's actions, but also by the two elders who want to win over their rival. The desperate villains are starting to change their mind on their loyalties and this yields importance evidence for our heroes' case. At the same time, the shift of alliances creates new dangers and the suggestion for an unwelcome compromise.

I did not expect the loss of trust between Soo-yeon (Park Se-yeong) and Jeong-il (Kwon Yul) to happen as soon as it has and so I am curious to see the new paths opened ahead. Now Soo-yeon will not manipulate her father for Jeong-il anymore and her ex-beau will not protect her from his father. Il-hwan (Kim Kap-soo) is shaking things up by cowering away from a solution, but it would have been equally fun to have two relentless elders.

What his cowardice achieves, however, is to boost the story to its next phase by bringing Yeong-joo (Lee Bo-young) back to the driver's seat and in conflict with Dong-joon (Lee Sang-yoon). "Whisper" is a two-lead series and so, while I understand that Yeong-joo's lack of a high-ranking position limits her, I am glad to see her growth. If male heroes can escape abroad and miraculously return as rich geniuses, a smart woman can learn to play the game while working among lions in their den.

While the loss of love and trust between the villains creates fun new dynamics on their end, it is not really a source of emotional investment for viewers, since those are characters we are meant to hate. A possible new rift or new uncertainty between the leads, however, is more interesting and frankly more realistic than a sudden friendship between two people who clearly do everything for their personal goals alone, even if those goals align at times.

I do have a complaint about this latest crisis and it is one I have about Korean drama plots in general. The only reason why Dong-joon is pushed into picking a new "culprit" is because drama characters become conveniently oblivious when it comes to gathering game-ending evidence. The series has to continue, of course, but the tension created instantly evaporates when these situations are written poorly.

It has taken "Whisper" half a series to get somewhere interesting and so I cannot really sing its praises too much, but as someone who has taken up the task of covering this show, I do feel happier to watch it now. As someone who knows how hard producing a drama is, I wish the work will pay off in quality. As a viewer, I also wish to enjoy it until the end, so dazzle me, "Whisper".

“Whisper†Viewership Ratings Soar As It Surpasses Its Previous Record

Lee-Sang-Yoon-Lee-Bo-Young2.jpg&key=7de1

SBS’s “Whisper†is killing it in the ratings game. On April 19, Nielsen Korea announced that the drama recorded an impressive 16 percent in its viewership ratings. This is 1 percent higher than the previous episode.

“Whisper†starring Lee Bo Young and Lee Sang Yoon follows a corruption scandal at Taebaek Law Firm. The drama has been receiving a lot of love for its unpredictable plot line and chemistry between co-stars.

The drama has been continuously breaking its records for ratings. How high do you think SBS’s “Whisper†will go?

“Whisper†airs every Monday and Tuesday.

omg! You cannot trust anyone in this drama!

Sooyeon and Jeong Il betray each other, well kind of expect it but DAMN!

Yeonju cannot wait for Dong Jun anymore. He likes to keep it safe but she doesn't. Her dad doesn't have time for it.

Whisper: Episode 7

whisper0702251.jpg

The bigger they are, the harder they fall. It’s a race to see who will be the first to strike the major blow, causing the wobbly Jenga tower of puffed-up egos and multi-million dollar companies to finally teeter. The toppling results may be surprising, but not even the most powerful are safe when it comes to the stalwart David valiantly fighting against the Goliath of corruption.

EPISODE 7 RECAP

As Dong-joon hugs her tight, Young-joo weeps at the realization that her father only has a few months to live. Meanwhile, Chairman Kang continues to prove that he’s the worst person ever by laughingly reminding Lawyer Choi of a time when they were boys and Lawyer Choi’s mother was beaten for trying to sneak some food home for her son. Lawyer Choi smiles and agrees that those were indeed “the good days,†but then he turns to a very unamused Soo-yeon, letting her know that the injuries sustained during that punishment was the reason her grandmother would never give her piggyback rides when Soo-yeon was a child.

The two families are enjoying dinner to celebrate the end of their thirty-year partnership, a fact that surprises Chairman Kang. He insists that they were never partners. Lawyer Choi was essentially nothing more than “hired help†to him, and Chairman Kang makes it clear that he still calls all the shots. But Lawyer Choi pulls out the old contract to dissolve their partnership, informing Chairman Kang that even though Chang-ho didn’t die on the operating table, Chang-ho still won’t live until the end of the years. Chairman Kang isn’t eager to sign the contract dissolution, but finally agrees when Lawyer Choi tells him that he’s managed to keep the National Assembly from investigating the corrupt defense contracts.

Just as he’s about to put his thumbprint on the contract, he gets a call to turn on the news. Chief Justice Jang is reported to be looking into the corruption cases with the defense department, specifically requesting the maximum punishments possible for the companies found culpable — which includes Chairman Kang’s company. Looks like this so-called “partnership†will continue.

The younger generation speculate on their fathers’ states of mind, knowing that neither will be pleased about Chang-ho’s surgery or Chief Justice Jang’s actions. But Jung-il’s made a deal with the Chief Justice, promising to get rid of Dong-joon from Taebaek and hand him over to the Chief Justice. It’s a deal that satisfies Soo-yeon, because even if it disrupts Taebaek, only Dong-joon will really suffer.

Whisper: Episode 8

whisper0800308.jpg

Soo-yeon’s feeble attempts at manipulation seem like child’s play compared to Young-joo’s master class. But even subtle and skilled psychological undermining can’t compete with cold, hard facts. Yes, as unbelievable as it may seem, the show has reached the point where the honest truth is now Taebaek’s most powerful weapon — a weapon that may turn out to be a double-edged sword.

EPISODE 8 RECAP

Over a bottle (or two) of wine, Jung-il and Attorney Jo discuss Chang-ho’s case. Since the best lawyers are looking into it, Attorney Jo worries that they’ll soon find the real culprit. Jung-il reassures him that because Chang-ho only has six months to live, there’s no way the trial will continue — he’ll make sure of that. Attorney Jo tipsily admits that he trusts Jung-il, he just doesn’t trust the person Jung-il trusts: Soo-yeon. Much to Jung-il’s shock, Attorney Jo suggests that they pin the blame of Sung-shik’s death on Soo-yeon. Yes, he knows Jung-il loves Soo-yeon, but they should focus on protecting their own lives first.Jung-il returns to the office, which is empty at that time of night. But he can’t shake the image of seeing Soo-yeon kissing Dong-joon. After thinking it over, he calls Sang-gu, requesting that they meet.

Over breakfast, Soo-yeon tells Dong-joon about all the media interviews she’s set up. But Dong-joon (with support from Lawyer Choi) has already made sure that the interview (and kiss!) from yesterday won’t be published. In return for the interviewer’s silence, he’s promised an exclusive story for when he and Soo-yeon divorce. That’s news to Soo-yeon (and her mother), but Dong-joon calmly informs them that they will soon break up, then reminds Soo-yeon about her appointment in court that afternoon. Soo-yeon is affronted, but her father says he’s already given Taebaek’s legal team permission to treat her as a key witness and not as his daughter.

Soo-yeon stubbornly schedules a doctor’s appointment at the same time of the trial — her way of protesting that she won’t take part in the trial since there’s no connection between her and Sung-shik. But Dong-joon simply reminds her about Sang-gu. She tries to persuade him to stop the trial, because that way Jung-il will be safe and Dong-joon can remain as Taebaek’s son-in-law. It’s the guaranteed way to make the everyone happy. By “everyone†she must mean just her and Jung-il, because I’m thinking Chang-ho and Young-joo wouldn’t be too thrilled.

Dong-joon coldly tells Soo-yeon that she’d better be in court this afternoon or next time she’ll be forcibly summoned. Later, at the office, Young-joo informs him that she’s heard from the legal team that Soo-yeon did indeed show up to be questioned as a witness. However, she knows that Soo-yeon and Jung-il have been dating for at least four years, so Young-joo isn’t confident that Soo-yeon will so easily testify about what happened at the fishing spot that night.

But Dong-joon vaguely says the courtroom is also where couples who have been married for over thirty years pin-point each other’s weaknesses as they squabble over their assets. A nice sentiment, but it doesn’t address the fact that Soo-yeon is still unlikely to testify against Jung-il.
