Whisper: Episode 14

whisper1400109.jpg

With the head of Taebaek under official investigation for murder, there’s a desperate race to see who will fill his shoes and lead the company. Everyone has their own motives to gain control of Taebaek, but only those who are the most persuasive — or those best at blackmail — will settle into the lofty granite office. There’s also finally a hint of romance between our heroic leads, proving that the greatest aphrodisiac is dismantling the foundations of powerful corruption.

EPISODE 14 RECAP

Young-joo arrests Lawyer Choi, although technically he’s just being detained under suspicion. Soo-yeon rushes to Jung-il, insisting he get down to the station to testify before a warrant is officially issued. She’s convinced she can find a way to discredit Doctor Dad and Driver Park’s statements, but Jung-il reveals that Dong-joon has already met with the chief prosecutor who was with Jung-il the night his father was killed. No one would now believe any alibi he would create on Lawyer Choi’s behalf. After Lawyer Choi is sent to a holding cell, Young-joo and Dong-joon plan their next move — a way to link Jung-il and Soo-yeon to the case. Secretary Song knows exactly how Soo-yeon is involved, and offers up his knowledge in return for a light sentence for his embezzlement.

Turns out Soo-yeon recently cashed out two funds to repay the money that Secretary Song stole, and as Young-joo orders her team to look into it, Dong-joon sends them a fancy box of fresh sushi for lunch. She warns him that it could be considered bribery, but he says that the bribery act doesn’t pertain to a person’s loved one. Ooooh, smooth. When Dong-joon returns home, he finds Soo-yeon in full PR damage control. He tells her that she should get some rest — he’ll take care of the family and company. But she warns him that her father will be released and return to work tomorrow. She blames him for her father’s arrest, but he reminds her that Young-joo has also lost a father. It’s about time Soo-yeon felt what it’s like to lose someone, too.

In the morning, Soo-yeon returns to the police station, ignoring the crowd of reporters shouting questions at her. She’s been able to convince the news stations to reveal the video of Secretary Song moving the body and being arrested to embezzlement, with the intention of making it look like he was the one who killed Chairman Kang.

But Young-joo is already prepared for her, thanks to Secretary Song’s intel. Not only is she able to prove that Soo-yeon cashed out a couple of accounts to repay the money Secretary Song stole, but she also has written statements from the Taebaek employees that were ordered by Soo-yeon to track down any cars with blackboxes from that night.

whisper1400524.jpg whisper1400485.jpg

Attorney Jo runs to Jung-il’s office to update him that Soo-yeon is now considered a suspect, but Jung-il is momentarily confused because he knows she’s not the real target. Dong-joon made it clear that he’s out to get Lawyer Choi and Jung-il. Dong-joon also knows that Jung-il is still determined to be in charge of Taebaek, and idly wonders if that was the only reason Jung-il got together with Soo-yeon in the first place. Maybe that’s also why he’s so angry that his father was killed, since he lost another way for him to get control of the law firm. In the interrogation room, Young-joo muses that Soo-yeon is in a difficult spot. If Secretary Song is arrested for murder, Soo-yeon will be considered his accomplice. She also can’t let her father be accused of murder, either.

But Soo-yeon has the video of Jung-il’s confession that he killed Sung-shik — it could make a useful bargaining tool. Young-joo knows she must have something on him, since she was able to convince Jung-il to make up an alibi for her father — the same person who killed his father.

Whisper: Episode 16

whisper1601185.jpg

All the power and privilege that has been hoarded by the rich and mighty begins to slip through their fingers when the scales of justice seemingly teeter towards those who strive to live by truth and honor. While the war against corruption has been brutal and relentless, the effort to destroy Taebaek may finally start to prove fruitful — but not without some heart-breaking casualties.

EPISODE 16 RECAP

whisper1600068.jpg whisper1600071.jpg

Young-joo arrives at Taebaek to arrest Jung-il, but she’s a few minutes too late — he’s already made his escape. Soo-yeon visits her father in jail to update him on the situation, and he surmises that Jung-il will leak the information about the slush fund. Annoyed, he tells Soo-yeon that she should have just married Jung-il like he told her to.

Angry, she asks him if he really wants her to live with the man whose father he killed, and who also promised would divorce her as soon as they had a child. Soo-yeon instead insists that she wants out of Taebaek — and for Taebaek to fall apart as soon as possible.

whisper1600155.jpg whisper1600159.jpg

Jung-il hides out at the temple while Attorney Jo tries to figure out their next move. But Jung-il is desperate to get rid of Young-joo, assuming that she must have been the only one to see the video. Worried about his own future and worried what would happen to him if he’s caught up in Jung-il’s schemes, Attorney Jo tells him that the best thing to do is run away.

When Jung-il grabs him by the collar in protest, Attorney Jo makes a point that Jung-il is only one phone call away from being locked up in prison. The only choice now is to trust Attorney Jo to find a ship headed out of the country as soon as possible.

whisper1600238.jpg whisper1600247.jpg

That’s a step Young-joo has already considered, and Secretary Song (for the cost of a delicious meal) helps her narrow down what shipping companies Jung-il would most likely use. He’s also convinced that, based on what he knows of Jung-il over the years, he won’t try to run away without first trying to get his revenge on Soo-yeon.

Soo-yeon finds Young-joo waiting for her in what used to be her father’s office. She’s annoyed because if she’d known this was a meeting between her and Young-joo, she never would have agreed to it. Dong-joon smirks as he tells her that he couldn’t send “his wife†to the interrogation room, so he thought this would be better way to help Young-joo with her investigation.

whisper1600479.jpg whisper1600491.jpg

Soo-yeon insists the case was closed once she submitted the video, but Young-joo reveals that things aren’t as clear as they seem. She brings up Sang-gu, reminding her that Soo-yeon was the one who ordered him to help take care of any problems with the bulletproof vest case. That means while Jung-il is under investigation for murder, Soo-yeon’s under investigation herself for contracting assault.

Playing dumb, Soo-yeon acts like she doesn’t know who Sang-gu is, although she thinks she heard his name from Jung-il. She adds that Jung-il was the one who solicited Sang-gu to harm Dong-joon that night on the docks, and also drugged him at the club. If Young-joo wants to catch the real criminal, she should find Jung-il.

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Whisper" Episode 17 Final

photo851862.jpg

The callousness never ends for our villains, who fight until the very end to turn things around for themselves and take one another down. Yeong-joo and Dong-joon's work is not done after his arrest, because there is always the trial. The time has come for everyone to pay for their sins and merits and we all know which ones owe the most. Meanwhile, Tae-gon makes a new friend in prison.

By now I am surprised that the villains are still trying. I understand why they are, but it is funny seeing Jeong-il (Kwon Yul) act cocky when he is no longer free to influence the evidence as he likes. There are several trails and people who can point to them on the outside. Then again, Jeong-il has not been playing with a full deck for a while, so perhaps this is just another manifestation of his madness.

photo851861.jpgphoto851860.jpg

Il-hwan (Kim Kap-soo) and Soo-yeon (Park Se-yeong) try their own luck and fail and although the two are more on the sane side than Jeong-il, they have proven slower than him before. One thing which surprises me is Ho-beom's (Kim Chang-wan) final act of kindness. As I suspected, we get some parental redemption. Even Il-hwan becomes supportive by the end. I suppose "Whisper" is an overall less dark series than the writer's previous so a neat ending with everyone possible redeeming themselves makes sense.

I have tried my best to view "Whisper" as a standalone work, but it is quite hard to do so at times. Sometimes I wonder if I even should. After all, if a creator has gained a following and that following watches their new drama because of their name, do they not have the responsibility of maintaining a certain level of quality? "Whisper" has been a far cry from "Punch - Drama" and even the premiere work of Park Kyeong-soo, "THE CHASER - Drama".

photo851859.jpgphoto851858.jpg

Which is why I am surprised that the creators themselves encourage a comparison by bringing Jo Jae-hyeon back as Lee  Tae-joon. The guest appearance is by all means great. Tae-gon (Kim Hyeong-mook) is a fun character and having him become a pupil to an enlightened Tae-joon is quite funny, but it says a lot about my experience that the peak of my investment in the series is when it most resembles another.

All things considered, however, "Whisper" is an okay work when viewed in a vacuum. There is plenty of drama, a search for justice that is easy to feel invested in and horrible villains inviting hate from the audience. We have a little romance, some messages on responsibility and morality and copious amounts of suspense. While the series is not to my own taste, it is a mostly solid one.

"Whisper" is directed by Lee Myeong-woo, written by Park Kyeong-soo and features Lee Bo-youngLee Sang-yoonKwon Yul and Park Se-yeong.
