Agencies show concern over new fair contract changes

Article: Agencies worry over changes for fair contracts "Our A-tier trainees might get stolen"

Source: Ilgan Sports via Nate

In an effort for fairer contracts, recent changes have made it so that trainees can terminate their contracts by paying back only what was invested in them (previous contracts demanded 2-3 times the investment). This is mainly concerning for mid-tier agencies who are now afraid that bigger agencies can "steal" their best trainees by paying the lower fee for termination.

-

1. [+259, -3] Considering how much is invested in these trainees, these companies only get paid back once those trainees debut under them and make money. If those trainees end up debuting somewhere else, then of course it's a problem for agencies... especially mid-tier agencies who spend all their time and investment in training someone only for a bigger agency to scoop them away.

2. [+194, -4] It is a gray area... it will also be a big blow to mid-tier agencies since most celebrities are willing to backstab and will go wherever is willing to pay them the most

3. [+184, -4] I'd be pissed too if I spent all this money on training someone just to have them picked out by another agency

4. [+20, -0] Well on the flip side, it's extremely profitable for big agencies. For mid-tier agencies, though, it's going to be like having all their best gems picked out by bigger agencies.

5. [+18, -2] These changes will make mid-tier agencies just like a temporary academy before bigger agencies pay the fee and take them away. I've noticed even on 'K-Pop Star' with YG and JYP openly admitting to wanting to cast trainees who are already under mid-tier agencies.

6. [+13, -0] It's great for big agencies... Not like anyone can pay to steal any of their trainees, and they obviously have the money to steal ace trainees from smaller agencies. Mid-tier agencies will just have to resort to casting trainees who were eliminated from the bigger agencies already.

7. [+8, -1] Make it like soccer where you have to pay a transfer fee too

8. [+4, -0] Maybe we need transfer fees or buy outs for contracts like in soccer ã…‹ã…‹

9. [+3, -3] But it's pretty much like quitting an internship at your company to start full time at another company, why is that bad?

10. [+2, -0] So mid-tier agencies have to invest all this money and time into feeding, housing, and training their trainees... only for a bigger agency to scout them away for a minimal fee. There's nothing that protects mid-tier agencies against that... other than say goodbye I guess.

For me it is fair under the new law, it protected the trainees, but it seem people in nate have different views.

or they could apply this lol

Btw, these changes included things like:
-changes in the penalty fee for terminating contracts. they only have to pay one fee now rather than 2 or 3 fees

-when a contract expires, artists can't be forced to resign or pay a fee to leave (even though their contract already expired)

-unfair termination, companies can't terminate contracts for reasons like "disrupting the honor of the company"

- it is now easier for artists to open up legal disputes against these following companies in regards to the contract

Now, if they could do something about 'old' artist blocked by their old agency (cockblocking) and TV appearances.... imstupid.png

People are always complaining how trainees get treated badly and have little rights, but now, when they are given opportunities to better themselves, all people care about are companies?? Not saying companies should loose out on investments, but if a trainee wants to change companies, it's better that they have a fairer chance to do so than have to be trapped by ridiculous interest fees.

^what I came here to say

There's no way Sohee isn't going to JYP now. Or Chrisha to YG for that matter lol

I heard the news somewhere that Chrisha Choo company had already announced to debut new girl group. I think he made that decision to stop Chrisa Choo from being snatched, but reality is not too away far from hell.

i think it'll depend on how much longer Chrisha is a trainee. Which she will be at least until she leaves Kpop Star, either by elimination or as the winner. Either way I still think its possible YG might buy out her trainee contract before she signs on for a debut under her current label. Any idea which entertainment company she is under?

So that means things will be better for trainees then since these companies will have to think of more ways to make it advantageous for their trainees to stay with them. They need to start being creative.

Or like some said they can work out additional charges for transfers.

Damn trainees have to pay back 3 times of what was invested. Damn that sucks

They have to pay 2-3 times of the training cost if leave middle of their trainee contract. If you leave after the contract ends then you don't have to pay anything. So it is a fine breaking the contract.

Thats why agency also need being smart, the longer they've been trainees the agency need invest more money. MBK doing smart thing with DIA, they made an open audition and some of them is come from establish company who had great talent but being wasted didnt get a chances to debut so they are on free market. Cathy from Woolim, Eunice from Star Empire, Jenny from Source Music and then Project A, Yebin and Eunchae also from Project A, Eunjin from dance company and only Chaeyeon who really get scout from scratch and only need six month of training days before get debut. Instead having long training period, they let them debut first and learn by doing. Watching DIA is like watch idol documentary how they grow up day by day.

That's... Business.

Like what the fuck do you expect?

The free market is free for a reason. Tons of people can expect these things to happen in industries. It's a business expense and risk.

It's not up to the government to coddle these multi-million businesses. If you're worried about employee drain

DO

BETTER
