It's an action rpg bullet hell platformer. It also has a deep story the encourages you to play through multiple times time get the full effect of the story.

Platinum made it if that gives you a better picture of what the game plays like. So if you like other Platinum games like Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising, Vanquished, etc. that imagine that plus the cool stuff from the original Nier like bullet hell stuff, changing perspectives, amazing music, and all that.
