  1. 1. Do you think f(x) could've done better than SNSD in the US?

There's a TLDR at the bottom ;*

Let me start by saying that I don't think SNSD's activities were quite the best for a US debut. The two shows they performed on were Letterman and Live with Kelly. While I cherish the fact that they were able to perform on these shows, they didn't help them gain attention. Letterman and Kelly viewers tend to be older, especially Letterman. Even with Letterman being a late night show, their median viewer age is around 55. No uncle fans in America; they aren't checking for SNSD. Especially with a song like The Boys. Had they had an image and song similar to Nobody, perhaps it'd be more appropriate.

What Wonder Girls did, the Jo Bros tour, was something that would've benefitted SNSD much much more. SNSD's music would appeal to a much younger audience than they were promoted to. It also would've been nice if they could've gotten their video played on MTV or VH1 but maybe that's a stretch.

On to f(x), I think they would've been a better choice (maybe one of the best choices in K-Pop?) for a US debut. I know this topic has been done over and over and no one thinks any K-Pop group can make it, but I at least think f(x) would've done better than SNSD did.

  1. Less Members = easier to remember names and faces. 9 girls is kind of intimidating and a turn off for even some k-pop fans. One of the remarks about SNSD was "The people seemed nice, but none of them really stood out or did anything different from anybody else." With less members, there are more chances to stand out.
  2. Friendlier image: SNSD were described as "hot asian girls" a lot when they performed on Letterman. I think f(x) has more of a girl-next-door type of image and would be taken more seriously
  3. Music: Pink Tape and Electric Shock is a bit closer to what America is listening to than The Boys, and I think a song like Airplane especially would've gotten more appreciation.
  4. Not tryhard: One of the reasons some think 2NE1 would never be taken seriously.
  5. Krystal: an easy face of the group. Just give her a slight tan and she's good to go. Good thing she can sing.
  6. Amber: People will be curious. This point could either go very right or very wrong.

TL;DR: SNSD could've done better had they promoted more to teens. f(x) would probably do even better than them and appeal to more people with less members to focus on, music that's good yet stands out, and an image that makes people take a closer look and not just see them as "hot asian girls".

Tell me what you think!

EDIT: I think we all know no group will be very successful. I'm just saying that f(x) would've been a better choice for testing the market.

It won't happen ever and we all need to realize this. Each group they send to the US will flop hard. The racism, the stereotypes, the hate, the language barrier, the beauty standards, etc. It will never work. Korean companies just need to stick with the support international fans give them.

America should try listening to what they're not used to some time.

Lol America will be too busy making fun of their accent/ clothes/ faces/ music. Us Americans can make fun of anything. They will probably call them wannabees and will tell them to go back to their country. Americans can be very close minded at times imo.

Not really.

1) SNSD never had an American debut. They just released one song for their fans internationally. An American debut is what the Wonder Girls did

2) Appealing to teens clearly didn't work for Wonder Girls so why would it for f(x)?

Because Wonder Girls had Nobody. They sound like ahjummas compared to Jo Bros.
