2 reasons (maybe there're more):

 

1. Because they want to call him ugly and hurt his feelings (and/or army's feelings). If this is the case, you should ignore them. 

2. Because beauty is subjective and they really think he's ugly, so it's their opinion. If you don't like that you should ignore it too.
