Chicago Typewriter’s star writer, ghostwriter, and anti-fan go for a spin

Chicago1.jpg

At last, here’s our first look at tvN’s Chicago Typewriter, the fantasy human rom-com from writer Jin Soo-wan of Kill Me, Heal Me, starring Yoo Ah-in (Six Flying Dragons) as a famous author struggling with writer’s block. The series finally has an airdate secured in early April, and has released a set of teasers introducing its three lead characters. On first glance, the show looks slick and stylish (not a surprise, since PD Kim Chul-kyu’s last drama On the Way to the Airport was beautifully directed), and Yoo Ah-in is going to have a field day with this character.

Yoo Ah-in stars as a prickly, sensitive bestselling author who broke out at the age of 21 as a genius writer and is now facing a career slump—he has writer’s block so severe that he can’t write a single word. So at the suggestion of his editor he takes on a ghostwriter, played by Go Kyung-pyo (Jealousy Incarnate), a character veiled in mystery.

Im Soo-jung (Time Renegades) co-stars as a veterinarian and huge literary buff, who was once Yoo Ah-in’s biggest fan and somehow ends up his biggest anti-fan, through a series of incidents. He’ll also have a rival in Kwak Shi-yang (Mirror of the Witch), the son of a famous author who suffers an inferiority complex because of Yoo Ah-in’s success. Complicating everything is the fact that our main characters are reincarnations of struggling writers who lived in the 1930s, during the Japanese Occupation.

The teasers all take on a typewriter motif, with the characters rotating on a cylinder like they’re being fed through a typewriter. In the first teaser below, Yoo Ah-in says, “I’m star writer Han Se-joo. But… I can’t write.†Go Kyung-pyo offers, “I’ll write for you. But I have one condition…†Yoo Ah-in asks what his terms are and then says in voiceover, “My secret deal with him has begun.â€

In the second teaser, Yoo Ah-in says, “The two things I don’t need in my life: a ghostwriter and a woman. They’ve appeared.†Go Kyung-pyo gives him the same offer to write for him, while Im Soo-jung presents him with flowers saying, “I love you!†Yoo Ah-in gives an exasperated look and says in voiceover, “Love’s miracle that begins with an old typewriter. Antique romance Chicago Typewriter.†I don’t think the teasers give us any new information, but it’s great to see Yoo Ah-in having such fun with the character and playing up the eccentric genius. I can see now why he picked the role!

Chicago Typewriter is scheduled to follow Tomorrow With You on Fridays and Saturdays beginning April 7.

tvN Reveals Vintage Posters For “Chicago Typewriter†Starring Yoo Ah In, Im Soo Jung, And Go Kyung Pyo

tvN’s upcoming Friday-Saturday drama “Chicago Typewriter†released a group poster and individual posters of the three main characters.

In the group poster, Go Kyung Pyo is hard at work with his typewriter, while behind him hangs a picture of the three characters 80 years ago. The same typewriter that Go Kyung Pyo is using is also in the framed picture, and the text reads, “A miracle of love that begins with an old typewriter.†The mysterious poster is triggering curiosity in many potential viewers.

The individual character posters are also worth a look. Yoo Ah In has manuscript paper scattered around him as he plays Han Se Joo, a popular writer who falls into a slump. Im Soo Jung shows off a lovely smile while holding a novel in her arms as she plays Jeon Seol, a novel maniac. Go Kyung Pyo is looking dapper in his suit, and he plays Yoo Jin Oh, a ghost writer hiding behind a famous writer.

The picture of them 80 years ago plays an important role in the storyline. Look forward to finding out how they meet in the present and in the past.â€

Novelist Yoo Ah-in barters in hearts for Chicago Typewriter

by tineybeanie | March 27, 2017 | 5 Comments

So far, tvN’s Chicago Typewriter looks kooky and krazy but in the best way possible. This new mystery rom-com is centered around Yoo Ah-in (Six Flying Dragons), who plays a prickly bestselling novelist currently experiencing a slump in his career due to a serious case of writer’s block. Because of the building pressure from his publishers and his fans, he decides to use a ghostwriter, played by Go Kyung-pyo (Jealousy Incarnate).

But according to the newly released teasers, it looks like their relationship will be centered around one woman’s love life, presumably referring to the main female lead, a veterinarian and Yoo Ah-in’s No. 1 fan, played by Im Soo-jung (Time Renegades). Still cuts show her trying to find him at an airport, where he is surrounded by a crowd of his fans. In addition, photos from the script read were also released, and Yoo looks already like the embodiment of his sensitive artiste role.

The latest teasers are shot in the same style as the first two, with each individual character scene being revolved around an axis like being rotating on a typewriter cylinder. This time, there’s a little more information offered about what will go down in the drama. Go Kyung-pyo introduces himself and proposes an offer to Yoon Ah-in: “I’m Ghostwriter Yoo Jin-young. I’ll write it for you, on one condition.†When the author asks what that condition is, Go asks him to “Please stop this girl’s romance.†Yoo’s voiceover says, “His [Go Kyung-pyo] secret offer sounded sweet to me.â€

In the next teaser, Im Soo-jung is surrounded by several copies of his book and many fan letters as she says, “Mr. Writer, I am your number one fan.†Holding out a bouquet, she confesses, “Mr. Writer, I love you.†Yoo Ah-in just tells her to scram. Suddenly, her demeanor changes, her fan T-shirt is ripped away, and she points angrily at camera, telling him that from now on she’ll be an anti-fan. His ending voiceover says, “In hindsight, I shouldn’t have made this woman an anti-fan.â€

Old friends reunite 80 years in the future in Chicago Typewriter

by girlfriday | March 28, 2017 |

Chicago16.jpg

This first poster for tvN’s upcoming Friday-Saturday series Chicago Typewriter is a little eerie, but it certainly works to ignite my curiosity for the mysterious drama, which is about a trio of writers living through the Japanese Occupation who are then reincarnated in the present day and get re-entangled in each other’s lives. Coming from the writer of Kill Me, Heal Me and the director of On the Way to the Airport, I expect an intricate past-present mystery, some crazy characters, and gorgeous visuals.

Yoo Ah-in (Six Flying Dragons) stars as a famous novelist considered the Korean Stephen King, a sensitive, prickly diva who’s been called a genius since he debuted at the age of 21. A bad case of writer’s block threatens his career, and so he agrees to take on a ghostwriter. Im Soo-jung (Time Renegades) is a veterinarian who starts out as Yoo Ah-in’s biggest fan, only to somehow end up his biggest anti-fan. She seems a little nuts in the teasers, but then again, so does Yoo Ah-in. Go Kyung-pyo plays the ghostwriter who makes an unusual deal with Yoo Ah-in for the job.

The first poster’s tagline reads: “Love’s miracle that begins with an old typewriter.†Yoo Ah-in’s character poster reads: “Star writer who’s fallen into a slump.†Im Soo-jung’s poster says: “Legend in the writer fan world.†And Go Kyung-pyo’s reads: “Mysterious ghostwriter who hides behind the star writer.â€

We haven’t seen any other glimpses of the cast as the 1930s versions of their characters, but that’s what I’m dying to see more of. I want political intrigue, espionage, and tragic lovelines! And more hats! Hopefully the show will spend lots of time in the ’30s to make up for it.

Persistent fangirl meets crabby writer in tvN’s Chicago Typewriter

by girlfriday | March 31, 2017 | No Comments

Chicago20.jpg

We finally get a peek at the actual drama in the latest teasers for Chicago Typewriter, tvN’s new mystery rom-com about a star writer and his biggest anti-fan and their connection to a secretive ghostwriter. Yoo Ah-in (Six Flying Dragons) stars as Han Se-joo, a famous novelist with an ego the size of Jupiter to match his successful career. A bad case of writer’s block will force him to take on a ghostwriter, played by Go Kyung-pyo (Jealousy Incarnate), and he’ll also get caught up in a series of hijinks with his biggest fan, played by Im Soo-jung (Time Renegades).

The latest teasers introduce us to star writer Han Se-joo who says imperiously, “Isn’t writer’s block just an excuse invented by whiny people who want a reason to drink?†Im Soo-jung’s character is named Jeon Seol (which also means “legendâ€), and she’s a legend in the fan community. She declares that fandom can change the world, firmly believing that she’s doing important work. Go Kyung-pyo plays ghostwriter Yoo Jin-oh and says in his character introduction, “I’m not in a position to reveal my name freely, so just call me Yoo.â€

In the second teaser below, Seol suddenly shows up on Se-joo’s doorstep and he assumes that she’s a stalker, or maybe a thief who wants to steal his story ideas. As they chase his dog down the street, she says he has a wild imagination, and he declares, “The dog and I have gone our separate ways. He says he won’t run with me ever again!†She tries repeatedly to say that she’s not a stalker, but he just robotically orders her to lower her volume, throw away her soup, and throw away her expectations. By the end of that scene they’re huddled under a table and she’s screaming, “Why are you so selfish?!â€

An antique typewriter seems to draw all three of our characters with some sort of supernatural pull, and the second they touch it, we’re transported to the 1930s where Im Soo-jung rides her bicycle into the sunset and Yoo Ah-in looks positively smitten with her. This typewriter will be what the ghostwriter uses to do his work, and it’s the item that links the three characters together and connects them to their past lives 80 years ago. Producers say that the title is a reference to the Thompson submachine gun nicknamed the Chicago Typewriter (because the sound of the gun being fired resembles the sound of a typewriter’s keys), and though their typewriter is literal, there is a hidden meaning in the title that we’ll just have to watch to find out. Clever fiends.

Chicago Typewriter premieres next Friday, April 7 on tvN.
