Article'Pro-Japanese ancestry controversy' Kang Dong Won, will it affect his next movie?

Source: Sports Seoul via Nate

1. [+1,836, -26] There's no way it won't impact it. As much time as time has passed, his ancestry doesn't change... Reminds me of what Jung Woo Sung said in 'The King', "The descendants of independence fighters? They'll starve to death without a pension. But the pro-Japanese are living lavishly large."

2. [+1,664, -28] I know that he wasn't born a descendant of such a man by choice but you have to admit he handled all of this poorly. It's definitely going to impact his image...

3. [+1,346, -47] I won't be watching it

4. [+116, -2] If he had at least acted like he was apologetic or attempted to clarify it, people would've defended him by saying it's unfair for him to be guilty by association... but the first thing he did was delete all the posts about it ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ as expected from the bloodline of a pro-Japanese

5. [+92, -3] I hope he realizes that his great-grandfather isn't great simply because he passed down a large amount of wealth to him. Please use the rest of that money on helping independence fighters.

6. [+85, -1] Yes, there's nothing he can do about his great-grandfather being a pro-Japanese. However, it was wrong how he handled this whole thing. If he had just honestly confessed that his great-grandfather was a pro-Japanese but that he will be helping the descendants of independence fighters and comfort women, then he would've been forgiven... Instead he was too busy trying to hide everything and turned all his fans into antis.

7. [+80, -3] Congratulations on ending your career. You might as well voluntarily retire now, you're rich enough where it won't matter anyway. If only you handled this better, you'd be getting less hate but what can you do? You brought this upon yourself. I won't be watching any of your movies or dramas.

8. [+61, -0] He's getting more hate because he called his great-grandfather an 'artist' among other things... at least shut up about it

9. [+50, -1] Disappointed in his attempt at hiding everything without apology. Considering the state of the country that those dirty pro-Japanese put us in, ugh..

10. [+50, -4] There's no way the scandal won't impact his career

11. [+40, -1] Wow... even Kang Dong Won is ending like this. I always supported his movies and all but now that he's a pro-Japanese bloodline.. sigh..

why should he even apologize for something he has no control over??? ridiculous... in fact this whole scandal is ridiculous.

edit: lol at the neg... what they should criticizes him about is the way he handled it but to say his career is ending just cos of it? ridiculous.  and dont say i said all this cos im his fan cos im not and i never even watch his dramas. but hating someone cos their bloodline is fucking ridiculous.

Nah. Knetz are all talk. They worship wealth and beauty too much to let the poster boy of all what they consider important in life just go away like that.

The next KDW movie/drama will be a hit, mark my words.

I get where they are criticizing him they way he and YG handled this situation is horrible why delete articles when you can just admit to it and donate to charity like koreans are really sensitive to this situation and as they should so yes KDW and YG handled it poorly.

Is this true?

I think hating on him for being related to his great grandfather is a bit extra, but if he actually said stuff like that about him then I understand why Knetz are angry.

People shouldn't be mad at him for his ancestry I mean he can't be blamed for being born into that family but him trying to wipe all the articles is what he should apologize for. You can't hide your past but you can just say you know about it and own up to it smh or just don't do anything at all

it will not affect him to be honest. knetz bluff a lot. i remember they all said they wouldnt be watching kim min hee stuff... but she even excelled better after the whole adultery scandal... her movie getting huge awards at film festivals and lots of people going to watch it. i was like" uhhh i thought they said they wouldn't watch it even if their life depended on it."

and its not like he is the one that was the pro japanese person.. you cant control what your great grandfather did. heck i'm sure if i dig deep enough i might find some terrible thing that my ancestor did to survive.. all these people condemning him should be sure their ancestry is clean with no speck of dirt before they try to point out others. if you check im sure one out of those knet comments at least had their ancestor probably did something worse..

edit: lmao at the negs ..someone who really wants his downfall is getting hurt....i am not even the guy's fan but i mean what i said. lets be real its not going to affect him.. if a scandal like lee byung hyun and kim min hee didn't affect them its definitely not going to destroy his career. if you notice i never pointed that whet he said about "his granddad being an artist" cause that is wrong .thats his only fault to me in this whole scandal and we are not even 100% sure in what context he said it during the interview... it might have even been for another question..you know how journalists like to twist info..  .. but i clearly said the people purely hating him for his ancestor being pro-japanese are wrong cause thats beyond his power(unless you can provide a time machine for hi to go back and stop is grand dad)... now as for the handling of it after wards ..yes it could have been handled differently thats why i didnt even touch on that at all.

for the last time, most people aren't hating because of his bloodline, but because he said in an interview that he was really proud of his ancestry knowing that his granfather is responsible of the creation of Korean comfort woman and was a pro-japanese

No one is that stupid to hate someone for what their family did

He has not handled it well at all. Instead of clarifying the situation, he has been avoiding it and even trying to mske it disappear. After you called your great-grandfather a piece of art after all the horrible things he did to his own people for money, you better own up to it and apologize for what you said.

Kang Dong Won will still doing good in his carreer. He is a good actor. Even Lee Byung Hun that k-netizen cursed like hell during his "big scandal" in 2015 still doing good until this day.

In an ideal world his efforts to bury any connections to his pro-jpn ansestor would be seen as an attempt to distance himself from a man he's likely ashamed of but its not so his actions just come off as shady. Definitely a situation where he should have just faced things head on esp considering his past comments (Idk how much knowledge he had about his ansestor's misgivings when he made those past comments but I don't think he meant to express pride in them)

It would probably be in his favor to make a public statement of his own clearifying everything something like "I wanted to disassociate myself from my pro-jpn ansestor but did so in an incorrect manner I apologized" and then follow up with some charity work to comfort women and/or vets something to further prove he doesn't actually hold pro-jpn sentiment.
