before you go on being appalled by everything Trump has done in office thus far, I think it would be fair to post news of the positive actions he has tried to procure and implement. There might not be many, but there are some like:

Trump signs laws to promote women in STEM

Two new laws will let NASA and the National Science Foundation push for women and girls to get into STEM.

The White House just gave women in STEM a boost.

President Donald Trump signed two laws on Tuesday that authorize NASA and the National Science Foundation to encourage women and girls to get into STEM fields. Those are science, technology, engineering and math.

The INSPIRE Act directs NASA to promote STEM fields to women and girls, and encourage women to pursue careers in aerospace. The law gives NASA three months to present two Congressional committees with its plans for getting staff -- think astronauts, scientists and engineers -- in front of K-12 girls studying STEM.

The full name of the law is the Inspiring the Next Space Pioneers, Innovators, Researchers, and Explorers (INSPIRE) Women Act, in case you're wondering where the acronym INSPIRE comes from.

The second law is the Promoting Women in Entrepreneurship Act. It authorizes the National Science Foundation to support entrepreneurial programs aimed at women.

"It's not fair and it's not even smart," Trump said of the low percentage of women with STEM degrees who actually work in the field. About a quarter of the women with STEM degrees work in the field.

The topic of women in tech has grown more heated over the past few years. Although women account for about 47 percent of the workforce in the US, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, they make up only 25.6 percent of computer and mathematical occupations, and 15.4 percent of architecture and engineering occupations. These days, women earn only 18 percent of computer science degrees. Meanwhile, President Barack Obama's administration projected there were more than a half million open jobs in information technology.

Trump signed the bills surrounded by various women like Rep. Barbara Comstock, who introduced the INSPIRE Act, and Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, as well as his daughter Ivanka Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. Vice President Mike Pence was also on hand, along with Texas Rep. Lamar Smith, to name a few.

In the Oval Office, Trump expressed the need to have more policies addressing women in the workforce.

"That's really going to be addressed by my administration over the years with more and more of these bills coming out and address the barriers faced by female entrepreneurs and by those in STEM fields," he said.

The White House didn't immediately respond to a request for comment as to what these other bills could be.

Shallow fluff policy.

We'll see how the funds are, and what they're allowed to be spent on, but as pointed out, many women have STEM degrees. They are kept out of the workforce by other factors. See the Uber and Tesla cases, women will not stay in workplaces where they are constantly sexaully harassed.

Hmmm why would Trump do this?

Strange, strange, strange. I thought he didn't give a shit about women. What's his motive for this?

all his policies fall under just a few items he promoted during his campaign.

american first, creation of jobs: he's a pro-business president. he wants people to get jobs. he wants less regulation so companies, whether large or small have more flexibility to be competitive. since there is an inequality presently with regards to women in tech, he wants to correct it.

while these two companies have relatively recently (was it today, even?) been places of controversy. there are a lot of many tech places that should be open to hiring more females with tech degrees. i know that there's a tech school here in my state where 95% of the place is guys. i think...or at least i hope that this policy and policies to come address this issue. so that a woman won't feel put off by enrolling because of something like this 95% male student body ratio.

Creation of STEM jobs by halting development of renewable energy? The sector that has a massive potential for STEM job growth and economic benefit?

The issue is not that these companies do not hire women laugh.png  They hire women, they hire A LOT of them. Women leave, because these companies have a corporate culture of turning a blind eye to harassment. That is the issue blowing up in tech and engineering. That they can't keep women. Another issue is some STEM workplaces are inflexible women's needs, which often involves being a primary caregiver to a child or adult family member.

And Uber and Tesla are not small fies! Your neighborhood IT office isn't doing what they do, what is large scale research and development.

None of this is aimed at addressing the internal issues of women in STEM, specifically the major corporations in the T & E. Because that would be regulations, to protect female employees.

It's fluff. By all means if someone can use this to advance the cause do it. But this is not sweeping change. It's some funds for school assemblies and some grants for female lead start ups.

then yes, there might be a bigger problem then in the workplace. there are definitely laws protecting women. but there is still a large disparity between male and females in high IT positions.

is it just the case in IT that these harassment cases are prevalent in or do they occur in other industries?

Of course, sexual and other harassment occur in every industry, to women and men. Why the tech industry had this problem, is something I can't say I know in detail.

But given that the companies themselves have started to address it with more training on bias and conduct, along with blind applications and benefits that appeal to women (egg freezing, increased maternity leave); it shows they recognize the issue is a structural and internal one. It's not that women lack interest in the work.

I doubt these bills will lead to anything meaty, but if some people can use it to further the cause, that's positive of course. But the issue is what happens when you inspire little Sally to do coding and building, and than she does her first internship she's basically iced out or chased out? Grants for female startups is very positive, but don't be fooled, most are destined to fail. Women need to rise in the major players, for the overall outlook to improve.

So I bust my ass off in college and there's a 75% chance I'm not even gonna get a job in the field???? The hell???

This is the overall number for all fields. Of course, it depends on the field, availability of the job, and location. For example, as the study says, you have better chances in urban areas.
