[Game] I was Prejudiced Against IKON. My Review of "Welcome Back"

The album: Welcome Back

My fave song from the album: what's wrong?, i miss you so bad, apology, my type

My least fave song from the album: anthem, welcome back.

Rating: 7.5/10

DUMB & DUMBER:

Started with the line "welcome party people" and i felt very welcomed to party whilst listening. Classic rap/party/hype song. It was fun to listen to, don't know if I would listen to it a lot though. The song itself felt long though? Almost as if it dragged on but it wasn't unjoyable to the point that I had to skip it.

6/10

WHAT'S WRONG?:

This song sounds like a song I'd want to listen to in the car it also reminded me of some angsty teenager from a bad romcom.

Junhoe sounds very good in this song. I probably like his (and jinhwans) voice the best. I also like the raps in this song they fit very well.

I enjoyed the opening lyrics, they were cute. I really liked this song. It became more enjoyable as it went on.

8/10

I MISS YOU SO BAD:

I love songs that have this sort of tempo so I really enjoyed this. I sometimes find that slow songs from rap-focused groups get ruined by the rap because it comes on too aggressive and kind of throws off the song for me but I didn't find that with this song, the whole song just kinda fit? There wasn't really a part that seemed out of place or I didn't like.

It was really just kinda mellow throughout the entire song which I really loved. I actually went back to listen to this a couple of times before finishing the rest of the album. The instrumentals to the song are also really nice. I really, really, really enjoyed this song.

9/10

RHYTHM TA:

Iconic (or should I say iKonic? ba dum tsk) hype song. Not much to say really everyone knows this song is a bop.

7/10

ANTHEM:

IKON IS COMING TO TOWN! It's very rap-focused which isn't really my style. They do sound amazing though. They're very talented so the song overall wasn't unbearable. I bopped quite hard to this. But I don't think I'd listen to it a lot though.

6/10

APOLOGY:

Really liked the piano intro. The vocals in this song are really pretty. I listened to this a few times on repeat before listening to the rest of the album. I really like this song.

Honestly? I don't really have much more to say other than I really adore this song. For sure my favourite on the album. Its just a super beautiful song.

10/10

AIRPLANE:

Aw this song was cute. The la-di-da-das made the song for me. The raps and vocal both sound very good. The song itself was just very cute and really nice to listen to. The bridge is probably the strongest part.

7/10

MY TYPE:

I really like the "woo ohhs" in the song, that's the first thing that caught my attention. The vocals on this song really stick out too, I like the way they all sound. The raps aswell.  I like the chorus to the song the best.

The song overall is just kind of boring in some way though? But not in a way where it makes the song unbearable.

8/10

TODAY:

I liked the "dadada" at the start (okay the whole song does this apparently I like it). Also Jinhwan has a very nice voice. I enjoy it when he sings. I like the tempo of the song it's quite nice. I like the snapping during the pre-chorus. The song overall was cute and nice to listen to. I like the chorus the best.

8/10

WELCOME BACK:

It was a pretty calming song. I liked the tempo a lot. I don't really like pitch when they sing the word back though. Overall it was a pretty nice song though it just got overshadowed by the other songs for me. Nothing really memorable for me.

6/10

Overall:

I'm pretty upset I never really gave ikon a chance (other than maybe two title tracks before this) (it was never anything against the boys I just knew Bobby was in the group so I assumed the group would be very heavily rap influenced. I was pleased to hear a few slow/medium tempo songs)

There wasn't really any songs that I couldn't finish they were all enjoyable for the most part. Though there are some that'd id probably only listen to again if the mood struck me.

I really liked junhoes and jinhwans voices the most. Junhoe just has that really kinda deep nice voice I liked all of his parts a lot. (is he the main vocal?) and jinhwans tone is very appealing to me. The other vocalists are very nice as well. There wasn't really anyones voice that turned me off.

The rappers are very good as well. I like B.Is tone more but Bobby is still incredible. They're both extremely talented.

I was more than likely gonna listen to their new CB anyways but now im actually really looking forward to hearing it!

I'm still listening to some of these songs on repeat

Whoever came up with the idea for this game is brilliant. Thank you! And thank you too, op, for giving iKON a chance. Like them or not, it's always interesting to hear from people who aren't exactly their fans.

I see you liked Apology so I'm going to recommend you Just go, a japanese release that has a korean version as well and it's their most beautiful song imo:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OF_eQ1-Ikxg

And because you liked Today maybe you'll like their other japanese release, Love me:

I'm putting this in a spoiler because I'm not sure you'll be interested in these since they aren't technically iKON's songs, these were remixes of some famous chinese songs they performed in a chinese show but they are really beautiful and iKON does such a great job performing them. I thought since you seemed interested in them you might want to check these out:

No pressure on you to listen to them, just sharing because imo these are too good to be missed and YG did nothing to promote them.

Edit: Wait, I just noticed you're a Vixx and Monsta X fan so you definitely know about The Remix, right?

Thank you for sending me these! I really liked the first song!! It was very calming it was very my style it's very pretty!

The second song was cute as well but I was popping to it. I think I'm gonna downloaded both of them tbh.

I'm shocked at how good live they are. Like? There isn't really a vocal or a rap hole.

I think the first performance from this was my favourite! The second was good too I really like their vocals. But I also really liked the third one it was really fun I liked how they looked like they were having fun performing it.

ALSO! in the third one when they lit up!! WOW that was incredible. Oh my god. Like Oh My God. That was i don't even have words for that performance that was just incredible. Wow.

And yes! I only watched their performances though!

Apology was the first and only song I heard from iKON before i knew about them and even before I knew they were from YG. I played it over and over again too without knowing who they were and Jinhwan's parts especially resonated with me (Yunhyeong's voice is my favorite tho after I started listening more to iKON ^^). It took some getting used to for Junhoe's voice since I wasn't used to his tone/color, but I don't regret opening my mind and accepting his voice with love.

THANK YOU FOR APPRECIATING DONGHYUK'S "Ladi-la-di-dada-la-di-da"s!! It is one of the most important pieces of Airplane because it adds such a unique color to their sound. And I especially love that you really appreciate the vocals in My Type~! The members' parts were perfect and I wouldn't have it changed any other way.

"Today" is so underrated. It's such a lovely song to me, especially the pre-chorus and chorus...and...now I am thinking about the rapping parts and the rest of the parts and...WHAAAT? Forget it, I love everything about it! Glad you liked it mostly. ^^

I really love parts of the chorus and the "Welcome Back" tone threw me off a bit, but I adapted. I understand how you felt. laugh.png

Okay, yes Junhoe is the main vocal and Jinhwan is the lead vocal. You've identified both of them, yay~! haha!

I hope we will see you around in the future as an iKONIC~! Feel free to join us in their thread. Vogue Korea recently posted an amazingly true article that for once captures the essence of what iKON is truly like, so if you're interested, just stop by and ask. Ask for anything, really! Fresh blood is welcome. ^^

Same. You don't have to if you don't want to because you could learn about them and listen to them at your own pace.

These are their pre-debut songs.

After they lost their chance to debut (WIN: Who Is Next) they created this song for those who had loved them.

Also for their fans. After they were given another chance in a second survival show.

This is them now. The remix version of the original Sinosijak in their 2016 Japan Tour.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dC1vWql0qig

[Put on captions for lyrics] Last but not least...the personal killer and iKON's forever anthem, the trainees' last performance in their first survival show at the average age of 17:

(Their vocals weren't developed fully at the time, so their development in the past years were nothing short of incredible.)

Sorry I hoarded this much to you.

That was donghyuk? He has a really soothing voice! I'm not too familiar with it yet but the "Ladi-la-di-dada-la-di-da" were very nice he sounded very good singing them!

Ah thank you for letting me know! So are the rest like sub vocals? and b.i and bobby rappers?

I might just check up on the thread! Thank you! :D

You're welcome! Yes, Yunhyeong, Donghyuk, and Chanwoo are regular vocals, which is why they have less parts than Junhoe and Jinhwan (some people forget that apparently...). I love all their voices, it's easy to identify who's who most of the time. BI and Bobby are the only rappers, yes~! Hope to see you in the thread in the future!

Yes, he's the main lyricist for all of their songs (except I Miss You So Bad & Apology I think (?) and he's still a co-lyricist for both songs) smile.png

and oh, he wrote Winner's Empty & Blackpink's Whistle too ^^

I LOVE APOLOGY!!!! YESSS. haha

the problem is, like you said, many people think iKON are heavily hip hop but their discography is VERY versatile. They're mostly mid tempo/low tempo with a few hip hop/bops.

Climax is a very dear song to iKONICs, the lyrics.... i actually tear up and cry every time i watch their performance.

Fun fact, these songs were actually gifts to iKONICs:

Long Time No See

Wait For Me

MUP   (This one was only in the half album and not the full one T_T)

Welcome Back is about them finally coming back to us, and Climax is about them achieving their dreams.

i love that musical connection with the boys <3

Wow... thank you so much for this honest review. I so glad that you gave iKON a chance and even more glad that you have taken a liking to them.

Personally for me, I love iKON's live performances more than their recordings because we're really able to feel their energy performing the songs. iKONICs all agree that iKON are born for the stage. That is truly where they are most comfortable.

Below are just some examples of iKON's amazing live performances:

I see that you have taken a liking to Donghyuk's melodious tone... I thought you should see another side of him in this performance of Rhythm Ta. (Dong's part @ 2:09)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3A3nEcRjVtA&feature=youtu.be

I know you liked Just Go and it is also one of my favourite songs by iKON. It's highly unlikely, but I hope they'll be able to perform this song (JPN or KR version) live to the public someday because it really showcases the prowess of iKON's vocal line - especially to those who doubt iKON's vocal ability.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjQbyhhBL-w&feature=youtu.be

Fun Fact:

Hanbin is known as the unbeatable single man. All the (love) songs he wrote are based on books/poetry he reads and dramas he watches.

He came up with the idea of Love Me while he was out taking a walk and Airplane was inspired by the uncomfortable airplane seats.

yeah! I was so shocked to find out they didn't have a lot of hiphop songs! I thought like at least half of the album would be like that!

I listened to mup on spotify actually after i did this review!

that's so heartwarming i love when groups have songs for their fans it's so nice
