[twenties stories] ADULTS, DO YOU THINK THAT YOUR SCHOOL LIFE WAS BETTER THAN RIGHT NOW?

I’m a private high school student going to her second year.

There are of course a lot of Korean citizens going through the same thing as me right but I feel like I’m so close to hell.

Every time school semester starts, it always starts in a scary manner. If I go to late night studies at the academy, I go home at 12AM. I cannot miss any single class at the academy. During the weekend, I have to attend the academy classes I’ve missed during the week days. I only have 3 hours of resting time per day.

My school is your typical private high school and it’s stressing me out to much, it’s like an infinite competition. Even if you are #1 in entrance mock test, you will barely rank 3,4th in our school.

Because of this, I don’t even have a dream university. I’m just slowly facing reality more and more. People around me all have super good grades.

I’m stressing out because of my uncertain future. Will I even be able to attend the university of my choice? Don’t you have to score 96 on the math entrance exam if you want to go into natural sciences? The writing test is also too hard.. I know that there’s still a lot of time but what can I do?

I still have so many homework from the academy left to do but I also have to do my performance assessment… Should I just stay up all night? If I stay up, I will fall asleep in school… if I fall asleep, during school, I won’t be able to go to university.

I was thinking about these things so can someone tell me what will happen to me after I hit my 20’s?
Will any company hire me?

There are still 2 years left before the hell that is the entrance exam. I want it to pass quickly.

When you become a real adult, is it true that you start to miss your school days? Or will I experience even more pain once I become an adult? If that was the case, then I don’t want to live anymore.

Up until now, I’ve been sticking into believing that it gets better after high school graduation but there were some adults who said that adult life is even harder than school days.

I think that I would commit suicide.

I never understood people who commit suicide back then but now, I think of wanting to commit suicide a few times per day… it’s depressing

  • Compared to your school days, living a social life in your mid-twenties is much better…. Of course, you can still get a lot of stress from work and other people but I feel like it was way worse during middle/high school… this is of course my personal opinion… but right now, I’m economically independent and I’m not lacking anything.

  • Right now, I’m a 32 y.o. ahjumma. The days that I want the least to go back to are my middle/high school days! I was not happy at all. You get stressed from your work life too but at least you earn money and can lead a prosperous life

  • The most enjoyable times of my life up until now were my 1st and 2nd year of university. I still get the extreme stress that I used to get back in high school and I cried at times, but I was with my friends during breaks, we went to eat lunch and dinner together, studied together and played outside together… once you graduate from high school, you won’t be able to go back anymore. The most hellish time is after you graduate university and have to look for a job…

I didn't hate high school but after graduation it was like..."wow that place really sucked".

"High School are the best years of your life!1!" Fuck that lmao can you imagine how shitty life must be for high school to be your peak?

I'm also in my second year of high school and i'm not worried not even a bit, i'm more worried about my entrance exams, but as long as i'm prepared and will learn it's not a problem

i'm sure it's gonna need time to get used to university and new people, but eventually i will, so it doesn't matter

School life in korea is really depressing. Maybe it's because I'm not much of a studier but damn. Kids should be living their life, not thinking about school work and exams 24/7.

I'm fortunate to never having experienced such stress to consider suicide

College has been easier than high school for me. I think because how well you do is more up to you, and you're not forced into doing things like in high school. When I look back all the stuff I had to read and write then it makes my brain hurt now, how the hell did I handle it?!

Of course, you still get stressed out as an adult, but I think you get better at managing it as you get older, since you've had more experience with it.

I really enjoyed secondary school but i know it isn't the same for everyone and i also know it's much different in south korea. They have much more pressure when it comes to studying and their exams are a lot harder too.

I just hope that student finds a way to keep going and hold on, I'm sure much better things are waiting for them. I really find it sad that middle and high schoolers are stressed out about school and their future to the point where they consider suicide. It's a real issue...

Both are enjoyable, but school life definitely had less pressure.

Getting into a good uni was easy - all you have to do is get good marks on exams, it's a straight and clear path to success. But at work there are no exams, you got to figure out a path of your own and it sure has been dim and winding for me so far.

This. Even though i had to study and get up for school i still had plenty of time to enjoy with my friends during or after school. I'd go back right now if I could.

school sucks, its so depressing to face the fact that you were lazy so you didn't do work every day

and then get anxious and then have nothing done anyways

such a horrible cycle of things because if you miss some work, you have to catch up, which make you miss more work because you spend all your time doing that

The people who found that studying was easy back in school days were people who didn’t study properly

or you know, they learned/knew how to study smart. Studying smart is better than studying hard. It saves you time and helps you retain more information in the long run. There's no need to spend 5+ hours over one subject. If you're just staring at your book/notes and trying to memorize the information for your next exam that's not proper studying.

Yeah, I definitely miss my last year in high school and my 1st year in college days. It is so obvious what you have to do when you are young. Wake up, go to school, study, sleep. Being an adult is so much more different. Maybe I will see things differently in a few years but for now, to be an adult sucks.

School in South Korea sound so crazy. Why do they want to stress the kids from as young as middle school?

When I was in school, I would usually have very good marks without even trying too hard.

The most stressing thing must have been preparing for the entrance exam. But I started early and took everything step by step, it wasn't really eating me up emotionally.

I miss HS sometimes. But not as much as wanting to go back to it.

Uni is waaaay harder. I feel overwhelmed at some points. But it's still not at the point the high school OP is right now.

I hope I'll find a good job when I finish Uni.

And the OP finds strength.

I wish I could go back to highschool because working sucks lol

But I think it might be the opposite in Korea because of the pressure they have as students (like sleeping 3hours per night is definitively not a good thing for health and sanity)

As much as I love Korea, I'm happy I didnt grew up there, it seems really hard
