Do you practice meditation

To me meditation is a thing to chill my mind, to restore the balance. I do not use it to dive into spiritual world. But I read several times that there are meditation techniques dangerous to unprepared people, hence they should be practiced under the supervision of the master.

Most interesting to me would be jyothi (flame) and tree meditation techniques

Jyoti meditation

Take comfortable pose.

Light a candle. Gaze straight ahead at the flame. Then take the candle flame, the Jyothi, into the heart and see it in the midst of the petals of the heart. Watch the petals of the heart unfold and see the light illumine the heart. Bad feelings cannot remain. Then move the flame to the hands and they can no longer do dark deeds. In turn move the flame in like fashion to the eyes and ears so they may henceforth take in only bright and pure sensations. Then move the light outward and into your friends, relatives and enemies, and then into animals, birds and other objects so that all are illumined by the same light.

(After several sessions with actual candle you would be enable to start this meditation just by imagining a candle before your eyes.)

Tree Meditation

Sit in a quiet spot.

Take comfortable pose.
Imagine yourself as a tree. Choose your favourite tree.
Imagine that above you, rising into the sky, are the branches of that tree. This is from where you will draw in energy from the Divine Father.
Imagine that below you, going down into the Mother Earth, is the root system of that tree. This is from where you will draw in energy from the Divine Mother.
Now you will start the process of breathing in divine energy.
First imagine pulling in (breathing in) energy through the branch system (Divine Father) into your body. When you breathe in this energy, imagine that it replaces something unwanted. When you breathe out, imagine all this unwanted material going out. Does this till you feel that this system is functioning well.
Then imagine pulling in (breathing in) energy through the root system (Divine Mother) into your body. When you breathe in this energy, imagine that it replaces something unwanted. When you breathe out, imagine all this unwanted material going out. Do these till you feel that this system is functioning well.
Now imagine pulling in energy from BOTH, the branch system and the root system at the same time. Energy will be flowing in from both systems at the same time into your body. When you breathe in this energy, imagine that it replaces something unwanted. When you breathe out, imagine all this unwanted material going out. Repeat this process of breathing in energy from both systems and then expelling all the unwanted material out as you breath out.

Edit: I forgot to ask about posting here techniques you practice or find interesting.

Yes. I do.

Yeah I try to do it everyday. I've been quite spiritual lately, so I'm just observing my mind and try to stay in the present moment

Guys, I forgot to ask about posting here techniques you practice or find interesting.

I tried to, but I'm a very impatient person

It is like with any exercises - one should force/nudge himself until it becomes a habit. -)

I dont really have a technique. My favorite position is sitting crossleged on sofa/bed and just observe my mind. Try not to get too involved in my mind's stories or thoughts but rather see them for what they are.

I've read a book "I Am That" by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, and it talks much about letting go of desire and fear, stop identifying with the body and go "beyond," know that this world is a self created illusion that I project on my daily life and just sitting there observing all that while I let every illusion getting destroyed so I can get to see the "Real Self."

However, whenever I feel anxious or overwhelming feelings I typically do some mindful breathing for a couple of minutes where I'm fully mindful of the breath going inside and observe my stomach going up and down at the same times. That usually ease the feelings (:

You described two techniques. =) The second one is wide spread across doctrines (for obvious reasons - you don`t have to imagine anything, and everyone has breath and stomach).

Funny that we made opposite typos - I typed 's' instead of 'd' (describes) and you typed 'dd' instead of 'ss' (guedd).

Now - after creating this thread - I see another two on that subject. Both are quite old and both have the same amount of replies (and almost the same amount of views). I guess this is the fate of all not hot threads on any forum.

Guys try it out of curiosity. Most simple variant with breath mentioned by Mischo or Jyoti one. I wouldn`t call meditation a must have experience, but it is very interesting and it helps to stay relaxed and fresh. Sometimes I do it right at work place when I got tired - 10 minutes and I feel like I walked by the beach or forest.

And about time and place. At first you need quiet personal space to start a session. But with time you can do it in the crowd, on the way from home, anywhere... I spend 60 minutes in subway when I travel to work or back home - now I can meditate even in subway (most unexpected place for a meditation).

Another application of meditation techniques - to lessen the physical pain.

If you have a pain in some body part you can try to do this:

- relax as much as you can;

- steady your breath;

- imagine that you do inhalation (in) right through solar plexus (middle of the chest near the border with belly);

- imagine that you do expiration (out) right through that part of body in pain.

Typical reaction to pain is to shut it away, to ignore, to supplant. Such behaviour could lead to not good psychological and physical  consequences. Better way would be to work with pain, to acknowledge its presence and importance, and to not hate it - after all this is your own body and it speaks to you.

PS And ofc if pain is strong and persistent then delaying the visit to doctor is not smart move.

Used to every Tuesday through yoga classes, but after I stopped the yoga, the meditation came with it.

I should really practice it again though, it seriously helps.

What yoga did you exercise? Fitness modern version or some original school?
