  • Fight My Way: Episode 8

FightMyWay08-00207.jpg

  • They’re so painfully awkward, I love it! Something about Dong-man and Ae-ra getting all twisted up around each other just makes me grin uncontrollably, because they’re so adorable in their refusal to admit that they love each other. But it’s getting harder for them to hide their feelings, and soon someone is going to have to step up and be honest, even at the risk of losing their friendship forever.

Round 8: “She was pretty…â€

FightMyWay08-00007.jpg FightMyWay08-00010.jpg

When Dong-man hears from an old classmate that Moo-bin is engaged, he rushes to find Ae-ra. Still upset, she tells him to stay out of her love life, but he yells that he has to get involved because she’s always screwing it up. When he comforts her as she cries, Ae-ra tells him to stop and blurts, “It’s because you make my heart flutter!†As Dong-man stares at her, Ae-ra tells him to be careful because she’s not cool or sophisticated, and that like a dog, once she bites she’ll never let go. Dong-man stammers in confusion, and she warns him that she’s close to biting, so they’d better both be careful.

She gives Dong-man his shoes back so he can drive them home on the borrowed scooter, then she climbs on behind him. Dong-man stiffens when he feels Ae-ra’s purse wedged between her chest and his back, ha. She says it’s so he can concentrate on driving, but he quips that his back can’t feel something so small, meaning her chest. Pfft, he deserves that head-butt she gives him in retaliation.

As they walk home, Joo-man tries to explain to Seol-hee that his kiss with Ye-jin was nothing. Seol-hee takes exception to his description of the kiss being like a slug on his lips, disbelieving that he didn’t like it at least a little. She tells him that she’ll handle the slug from here on out.

Dong-man and Ae-ra’s walk home is a lot quieter, both of them feeling awkward and uncomfortable. Eventually Dong-man asks if Ae-ra will come to his match in two days, and she starts to yell at him for fighting but then trails off when the awkwardness returns. Dong-man tells her that he’s fine, so she can act like she normally does.

FightMyWay08-00079.jpg

It’s too late, so Dong-man desperately comments on the stars, of which there are none, hee. They’re saved from themselves when Joo-man and Seol-hee show up, but Seol-hee goes straight home, then Joo-man heads up to his place, neither of them in the mood to drink.

Alone again, Dong-man and Ae-ra go to the roof to drink, and Dong-man promises to handle Moo-bin. He asks Ae-ra why she keeps dating such awful guys, which is apparently a habit that goes all the way back to middle school, when the boy Ae-ra was dating stole her phone and changed schools.

Dong-man also remembers the guy in the band (Ae-ra: “We didn’t date!â€), Moo-ki who got another woman pregnant, and now Moo-bin. Ae-ra says haughtily that he left out her real first love, whom Dong-man only knows as “Wrist Guy.†Ae-ra says that her arm still hurts when it rains because of Wrist Guy, and Dong-man grumbles that he’s another loser.

FightMyWay08-00101.jpg FightMyWay08-00102.jpg

Ae-ra gets lost in a memory from 2011, when she and Dong-man had gone out to eat before he did his army duty. She assures him that he’ll forget all about Hye-ran once he’s away, but Dong-man argues that guys think about their girlfriends even more at times like these.

The next morning, Ae-ra takes a pot of hangover porridge to Dong-man’s place, with a note saying that she’ll wait for him to come home from the army. She finds Hye-ran sleeping on his stoop and tiptoes past her, and when Dong-man doesn’t answer her knock, she leaves the pot of porridge on his doorstep. But she doesn’t see an errant breeze blow her note away. Dong-man wakes to find a note that Hye-ran slipped under his door, asking him to meet her outside. He finds the porridge and naturally assumes it’s from Hye-ran, and she doesn’t correct him.

FightMyWay08-00139.jpg

A while later, Ae-ra runs back to Dong-man’s, having forgotten the kimchi. She hears weird noises coming from his balcony and wonders if they have rats, and then she sees him and Hye-ran, deep in a makeout session. She tries to escape before they see her, but she trips and goes tumbling. Dong-man runs down to Ae-ra, who’s clutching her badly hurt wrist. OMG, Dong-man is Wrist Guy?? He’s Ae-ra’s first love!

Hye-ran puts on a big tear-filled show over Dong-man leaving for two years as Ae-ra grumbles that it’s not like she’ll wait for him. Dong-man checks Ae-ra’s wrist and fusses at her for crying because of a fall, saying that she’s ugly when she cries, never guessing that her tears are because he’s leaving. He wipes her tears with his cuff and tells her softly to stay out of trouble. It doesn’t escape Hye-ran’s notice that his goodbye to Ae-ra is longer and more tender than the one he gave to her.

FightMyWay08-00143.jpg FightMyWay08-00145.jpg

Back in the present, Dong-man wonders how Ae-ra could hurt her wrist just from liking someone. Argh, he’s so dense! Ae-ra says that Wrist Guy was utterly useless and had no idea she liked him, and Dong-man sighs that clueless people never even know they’re useless. Tell me about it.

He asks Ae-ra if she still thinks about her first love, so Ae-ra says that a first love is like an immunization shot—you’re nervous before you get it, then it hurts a bit, but then you’re okay, with just a small scar left behind. Dong-man laughs and says that first loves are bullcrap, then they retire for the night. But when he’s alone, he can’t stop wondering who Ae-ra’s first love is. Ae-ra lies in bed, sighing at what a dimwit Dong-man can be.

  • Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching??!

fight7-00024a.jpg

It feels like we’re into the thick of this “season†of shows, which feels more like a traditional season than usual because so many things premiered at the same time. So now’s a good time to take stock and figure out what’s making the cut and what’s starting to drop off the watch list. Or is everyone being stubborn and clinging to sleepless nights and drama marathons? â€“javabeans

javabeans

  • Fight My Way: I have this niggling feeling I want to like this drama more than I do. The main couple is great, but the secondary couple is just such a drag that I’m contemplating skipping their scenes. I’m glad the Moo-bin detour is over, since I couldn’t even enjoy Dong-man’s jealousy because I was annoyed at him for being petty and mad when she gave him so many chances to speak up, and I thought he’d reneged on his right to be upset about her dating someone else. If we could just focus on them and their feelings for each other from here on out, that would make me happy.

girlfriday

  • Fight My Way: So doofy, but so cute. I just really enjoy the schoolyard maturity level of our two leads. This week, Choi Woo-shik’s extended cameo made me think that he and Park Seo-joon must be really, really, really good friends for him to come by and play a character I wanted to kick in the face so badly. The things a guy will do for his real-life bro.

chickachunga

  • Fight My Way: Wow, Moobs, just wow. Moobs takes the cake for worst drama boyfriend ever, that two-timing boob! Dong-man may not be the sharpest crayon in the box, but his heart is always in the right place. Park Seo-joon continues to kill it, and I honestly laugh at every little thing he does—he is sogood at comedy. Really, the whole cast is pitch perfect in their respective roles, and while I won’t miss Moobs, I will miss Choi Woo-shik; he’s so talented, but so darn selective when it comes to projects. He does pick ’em well, though. Guess I’ll see you in Okja, then!

tineybeanie

  • Fight My Way: I love it! I could almost hear Dong-man’s heart stop beating when Ae-ra confessed that she feels flutters whenever he hugs her. Waaaah and that ending scene where Dong-man came up to a cringing Ae-ra who was still shutting her eyes tight because she couldn’t bear to see him hurt—adorbs to the max! Better than at least six golden retriever puppies. My problem with Joo-man continues, although I laughed my butt off when he did his “I got a promotion†solo dance in the break room. I totally would do the same thing, except way more embarrassingly. Poor Seol-hee. But at this point, she should take action now that she has all the facts in front of her. It’s so frustrating because she definitely wants to do something about the situation, but in actuality, she takes no action and stays passive, waiting for things to change, for Joo-man to make things better. Girl, please take control of your life and the direction you want it to go in with confidence, and let the chips fall where they may. Otherwise, you might just be left trailing after your first love, whose heart may have already left you.

  • Fight My Way: I love that each week we see more layers to Ae-ra and Dong-man’s relationship. And given the many years they’ve had together, unpacking all those mixed signals and hidden messages is going to be a crazy, awkward, and totally swoony ride, and I am so ready.

Laica

  • Fight My Way: Wow. I already hated Moo-bin, but this takes oblivious douchebaggery to a whole new level, and I’m glad Ae-ra found out before anything but her pride could be hurt. I do wish it hadn’t taken this drastic of a plot twist to make her dump him—because he’d already given her plenty of reasons—but I get that she was dating him out of anger and her confused feelings for Dong-man. Plus, it got us that confession! And then a whole episode of completely adorable awkwardness, and then that confession. Eeeeeeaurgh. Don’t mind me. I’ll just lie here, passed out with joy until next week.

TeriYaki

  • Fight My Way: Dong-man’s debut in the ring was everything that I hoped it would be. So much so, that I wasn’t as interested in his relationship struggles this week. Park Seo-joon put in some serious gym time to prepare for this role and I was impressed by his transformation. The mysterious landlady is starting to grow on me. When she popped up and scared Dong-man because he couldn’t give Ae-ra a compliment, I wanted to give her a high five. Joo-man and Seol-hee make me sad, even when they are on good terms. I’d like to see them happy together and excited about their future, but whatever they are right now, it’s hard for me to watch.

  • Fight My Way: Episode 9

FightMyWay09-00227.jpg

  • I’ve been on pins and needles all week waiting to see what happens next, and I’m definitely not disappointed. Almost all of our friends experience bursts of positive growth, making decisions about their relationships that will permanently change their futures. One of the best things about this show is that it gives you exactly what you want, just in a way you didn’t expect. It’s so refreshing to get all of the tropes I count on in a rom-com, but in a way that still manages to pleasantly surprise me.

Round 9: “Youth is only youth when you cause troubleâ€

FightMyWay09-00019.jpg

Ae-ra sneaks into Dong-man’s fight, and she overhears the ladies sitting in front of her gushing over the new handsome fighter. She objects when one of them zooms in on Dong-man’s fine form, though Ae-ra is mostly upset that the woman plans to video Dong-man getting beat up. She sees Hye-ran enter surrounded by reporters, and then the fight starts.

Ae-ra watches nervously as Dong-man takes some hard hits right at the beginning. After a few seconds she can’t take anymore and ducks her head, claps her hands over her ears, and waits for the horror to end. She flinches at the bell, but she can’t bear to look up and see Dong-man beaten to a pulp.

But a hand taps her knee and she opens her eyes to see him peering up at her, perfectly fine. Ae-ra tearfully asks if he has to do this, and Dong-man smiles and says, “I’m in trouble. Now you look pretty even when you cry.â€

fight9-00017a.jpg

Ignoring the screaming crowd, Dong-man stands and offers his hand to Ae-ra. She tentatively holds out a finger which he grasps, teasing that she’s acting like such a girl. He leads her through the arena right past Hye-ran, and once alone, Dong-man asks if she’s holding his hand like that because she’s feeling fluttery.

He admits that she’s not the only one who’s feeling that way, and his previous cool falters a bit. Dong-man says that somehow, he only saw her tonight in the arena, and that she’s becoming pretty to his eyes. He continues that even though he used to only think about things like putting her in a headlock and mooning her (hee), now whenever they touch, it feels like skinship. He takes her hand in his.

Ae-ra looks up, confused, and he says that when she looks at him like that, he sometimes wants to kiss her. She’s flustered by his honesty, and Dong-man pleads with her, asking if she thinks about those things, too. Ae-ra begs him to keep those thoughts to himself but she doesn’t drop his hand… and suddenly someone takes Dong-man’s other hand, and they look up to see Coach Hwang standing there clasping Dong-man’s hand, on the verge of tears. HAHA. After agreeing to marry once Joo-man gets his promotion, he and Seol-hee exit their bus to find his admirer Ye-jin standing there. She’s heard Seol-hee calling Joo-man by a lovers’ endearment, but instead of freaking out, she kicks off her shoes and lies down on the bench for a nap.

fight9-00057.jpg

A few minutes later Seol-hee sits with Ye-jin’s head in her lap, checking out her rival’s pretty features up close. Ye-jin wakes and asks why Joo-man helped her with the copier, then she lies back down whining that she really liked him. Awww, she’s obviously been drinking, and she’s pretty pitiful.

Joo-man comes back from getting Ye-jin an energy drink to wake her up, and Seol-hee bristles at his attentiveness. Luckily Ye-jin’s mother calls her phone, so they ask her to pick up her daughter. She’s a sweet lady, but it’s strange how she only looks at Joo-man and says that she hopes to see him again.

Coach Hwang drives Dong-man and Ae-ra home, and Dong-man teases him for being a crybaby. Ae-ra realizes that the guys need some time alone and heads to her place, leaving Dong-man looking a bit freaked out at having to deal with Coach’s tears.

FightMyWay09-00107.jpg FightMyWay09-00108.jpg

Coach says soggily that he’s followed Dong-man around for ten years, but tonight he saw him fly again for the first time. Awww. He tells Dong-man to be good to him and repay him with a life of luxury someday, then insists on a hug. Dong-man reluctantly submits to the most awkward hug ever, worried someone will see them and get the wrong idea, but it makes Coach Hwang sohappy.

They jump apart when a voice barks, “Move your car!†It’s Landlady Hwang, who tells them that she doesn’t judge, but they should move their car before continuing with what they were doing. PFFT. Coach Hwang looks a bit stunned by her, sure that he’s seen her somewhere before.

Tak-soo goes into a workout frenzy after seeing Dong-man’s fight in person. Coach Choi and Tae-hee mutter that it’s no wonder Tak-soo tried so hard to block Dong-man from fighting, because he’s that good.

FightMyWay09-00130.jpg

The next morning, Joo-man, Seol-hee, and Ae-ra take turns feeding Dong-man, their new star, who milks it for all it’s worth. Ae-ra is a bit miffed that all of the articles about Dong-man’s fight and how he went to her afterward only mention her as “a fan†and blur out her face. But she’s more concerned about her announcer interview tomorrow at a KBC satellite station, determined to knock this one out of the park.

Seriously I want to cry over how good this drama is. I just LOOOVE how they handle everything out.

Time to drop Joo Man's ass. He really doesn't deserve Sul Hee. It's so funny how he is actually the one you consider succeded something in life between four of them, but has no courage even in simple situations. After he did what Sul Hee couldn't do, I was like, yeah, that's it Dong Man! Step up for your girl! But no... He is failing me again. I'm glad her mom&dad taking no shit from Dong Man and protecting their daughter. I can understand his pov, i can understand being not grateful for simple things but boi, you have big storm comin when you REALLY lose those small things.

Main couple as beautiful as always. Honestly I'm not many times sold on the friends-to-lovers trope since I feel like most stories use that as a plot device and acting like relationship is an upgrade from friendship. But this drama treated their friendship and relationship sooo right. It's impossible to not cheer for them. Everyone being bitchy nothing new but I'm glad how Ae Ra putting her name out there little by little, see her light bitches! I'm soo creeped out by that producer dude. Anticipating the flashbacks.

All in all, lovely two episodes!

Fight My Way: Episode 10

FightMyWay10-00049.jpg

  • One step forward, two steps back… Just when it was looking like everyone was making some fantastic strides towards maturity and honesty, events conspire to put them back in their places. It’s frustrating to watch two couples who can’t just say what they’re feeling, bad or good, because by trying to avoid the risk of being hurt themselves, they only end up hurting each other. But some people manage to push forward despite that, and there’s plenty of cuteness to go around too, making the frustrating moments completely worth the pain.

Round 10: “Some or whateverâ€

The ringing phone wakes Ae-ra in her motel room, and she looks over to see Dong-man sleeping next to her. She checks under the covers and gasps, then pops Dong-man in the forehead, jarring him awake painfully.

Ae-ra also sits up, revealing that she’s still in her bathrobe. She barks at Dong-man for sleeping shirtless in her room, and he covers himself primly, saying that she was in the mood to drink. She snaps back that he said he’d leave when Coach Hwang returned to the motel. He keeps asking her over and over, “Do you really not remember?â€

Ae-ra does remember something… She watched Dong-man sleeping late into the night, and reached out to softly touch his face. She whispered out loud, “Why do you have to be so handsome? You make me so tense.â€

FightMyWay10-00024.jpg

She grazed his face, and then when she reached his lips, Ae-ra leaned in close as if to kiss him. But she backed off at the last moment and turned her back. Behind her, Dong-man opened his eyes, having been awake the whole time.

Then later into the night, Dong-man watched Ae-ra sleep, incredulous that she could sleep at a time like this. In her sleepy haze, she slid an arm over him and snuggled close, making Dong-man forget to breathe. He looked down at her face and reached out to push her hair off her forehead, and she sighed and cuddled even closer.

Once he recovered for the second time, Dong-man leaned over to place the tiniest of kisses on Ae-ra’s forehead. He closed his eyes and drifted off, and a while later he grew hot and pulled his shirt off in his sleep.

FightMyWay10-00074.jpg fight10-00009.jpg

In the morning, he complains about Ae-ra blowing her hot breath on his face, revealing that he felt her touching his face, but Ae-ra tells him to forget it. Dong-man refuses, so Ae-ra goes on the offensive and asks why he’s bare-chested. He doesn’t know, and he gives Ae-ra a cheeky look and asks if shetook his shirt off.

There’s a sudden knock at the door, and Dong-man assumes it’s Coach Hwang and goes to answer. But whoever it is has Dong-man rearing back in terror as Ae-ra shakes her head in horrified denial. She narrates that in life, timing is always terrible. One hour prior to the motel door opening, we see four people descending upon Daecheon at the same time. Dong-man’s acquaintance Kyung-ku travels on a work-related excuse, and Hye-ran grows angrier as her calls to Dong-man go unanswered. Ae-ra’s father has decided to surprise her by coming to see her emcee today, but all we see of the fourth person is a pair of gold high heels.

Thirty minutes before the door opens, Ae-ra’s dad arrives at the event stage, worried that Ae-ra isn’t picking up her phone. He finds the director talking to Coach Hwang and says he’s the MC’s father, so Coach introduces himself. Coach Hwang walks Ae-ra’s dad to the motel, complimenting him on his strong daughter. He says that he’s more scared of Ae-ra than any other woman in the world, then he slips and calls her “Microphone Wacko†(his nickname for her), making Dad bristle at him.

FightMyWay10-00105.jpg

As they enter the motel lobby, a woman in gold heels quickly slips into the office. She frog-hops across the room, trying to avoid being seen, and HAHA, it’s Landlady Hwang. She shows photos of Dong-man and Ae-ra to the clerk ajumma, who confirms that they stayed here last night.

Ten minutes before the motel door opens, Kyung-ku has found the event stage and is schmoozing the director to let him take pictures. He seems annoyed when the director gushes about Dong-man’s talent.

One minute before Ae-ra’s motel door opens, Coach Hwang and Ae-ra’s dad knock on her door, but nobody answers. The other fighter, Doo-ho, comes out of his room and tells them that Dong-man didn’t sleep in his room. Coach mutters that he didn’t sleep in his room, either.

FightMyWay10-00124.jpg fight10-00016.jpg

It dawns on all of them simultaneously where Dong-man must have slept. Ae-ra’s dad pounds on her door furiously, and when it opens, they’re as shocked to see Dong-man as he is to see them. Ae-ra’s dad takes in the scene—shirtless Dong-man, Ae-ra in bed—and assumes the worst.

Dong-man tries to escape, begging Coach Hwang with his eyes to help him, but Ae-ra’s dad tells him in a too-calm voice to close the door. Dad starts taking off his watch and shirt, revealing a scary-looking tattoo on his shoulder… of Ae-ra’s name and birthdate (heh). Coach reaches out to dramatically caress Dong-man’s face one last time, then Dong-man resolutely turns to accept his fate.

FightMyWay10-00148.jpg

Unable to find Dong-man’s motel, Hye-ran instead takes a seat at the show venue. She eavesdrops on the director talking about how great Ae-ra was yesterday, and how she’ll be a star.

Landlady Hwang makes her way upstairs, and she presses her ear to Ae-ra’s motel door alongside Coach Hwang. Coach seems to recognize her, and he starts to ask, “How are you… “ but a loud THWAP from inside the room makes them both cringe.

FightMyWay10-00172.jpg fight10-00027.jpg

Ae-ra’s dad delivers a solid beating to Dong-man with a coat hanger as Dong-man whines that Ae-ra already hits him all the time. Dad asks what he’s after by sleeping here, and Dong-man promises that even if the two of them were stranded on a desert island, he’d only consider her like a native or a monkey. Dad snarls, asking what’s wrong with Ae-ra, and Dong-man resigns himself to another beating.

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching??!

Checking in for another weekend wrap-up! It feels like it’s been the longest week ever, and I can’t figure out if keeping track of all of the dramas ever is what makes it feel so long, or if having lots of hours of drama goodness helps make the time fly by. Well, in either case I suppose I count myself lucky; there are worse ways to spend a week! â€“javabeans

javabeans

  • Fight My Way: Well, finally! I know I said I would love to see this couple being friends for a while, but I actually think they left the friend zone a long time ago and have been dancing around in the romance zone without actually doing anything about it, and that frustrated me. I still really dislike the second couple storyline even though I think they’re both decent people who care about each other and deserve good things. I just don’t really care to see this relationship play out, because I keep thinking they should just break up, figure things out, and then decide whether they want to get back together. Offscreen.

girlfriday

  • Fight My Way: This drama just makes me happy. Why is it that every time this hero says things like “I want to hold your hand†or “I want to kiss you,†it makes me more fluttery than the actual handholding or kissing? Oh and I really love gruff, overprotective Dad, all tatted up and willing to go to the ends of the earth to cheer on his daughter. He’s the best.

tineybeanie

  • Fight My Way: I squeal too much for this drama. I love how the main loveline is not necessarily based on an instant attraction that cannot be explained, but rather a slow deepening connection that resulted from years of support and friendship. The way Ae-ra and Dong-man are rediscovering each other all over again as potential mates is so cute because they’re so awkward and real-life about it. I have revised my opinion about Joo-man. He’s poop. If his aspirations in life are to be a show-off about his success, that’s completely fine, but abandoning his 6+ years solid, steady girlfriend to do so without even talking about it, that’s not okay. He’s being a coward for lying to her about the new intern girl, and he’s also being a bad partner by not taking an active role in making Seol-hee feel secure in their relationship.

EP11/12

SLAY SUL HEE! SLAY MY ENTIRE BEING! God what a character development. She was AMAZING! I don't really want her to go back Joo Man, but if she gonna do it I hope they handle it nicely.

Dong Man/Ae Ra's relationship is moving forward so realistically, I love how they didn't flat out change their character but sharpened the edges. And it's so good to not see Hye Ran's ass a bit LMAO.

I wasn't expecting Dong Man to go his coach and be like "I'm gonna do it my way YOLO" but I'm happy it happened. Made me realize this drama is NOT only about fighting for your dreams but also making them real in your pace. Because that's really important. If you wanna do something you have to accept you will not move at the same pace with others. Sometimes you need to take detours, sometimes shortcuts. It's okay as long as it's your way. :') Becky's Back was a fabolous drama but truly, I didn't notice this writer's potential to be so big. I can't imagine what she/he has in store for us after this drama, but for sure I'm gonna follow closely.

Is landlord really turn out to be Ae Ra's mom? Like Nam Il saying how he can see the resemblance out of nowhere, and landlord lady recognizing Dong Man's father. Uhm. Or is this a nod to Becky lol. Oh and talking about Nam Il, what is he doing here? What's his purpose? I'd like him to end up with Sul Hee if he's not an ass but uhm.
