Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching??

javabeans
  • Fight My Way: Park Seo-joon is so good—all that disappointment and heart and hope! Sometimes I watch ordinary, serviceable actors and think that they’re good enough, they’re adequate, whatever—and then I watch emotionally genuine actors like Park Seo-joon (and Yeo Jin-gu) and wonder how I could ever be satisfied with lowered standards when good actors can bring so much more to the table. Kim Ji-won is great too, though it was Park who made me cry this week. I’d like to drop-kick that ex-girlfriend out of the show, though.

  • Fight My Way: What is this? An actual friends-to-lovers drama with actual chemistry and cuteness?? It’s subtle, but I love how the two characters have this underlying connection that makes them trust and confide in the other person no matter what. It’s this type of bond, stemming from their long-time camaraderie, that I think makes a great foundation for a permanent relationship. And surprisingly, I’m pulled in by the secondary romance as well. It may be too early to say, but perhaps Fight My Way could redeem Park Seo-joon in my eyes from the disappointment that was Hwarang.

SailorJumun
  • Fight My Way: What an awesome group of friends. I’d love to see all four together more often, but I do enjoy the individual couple moments. Dong-man and Ae-ra’s blossoming romance against Joo-man and Seol-hee’s withering(?) romance is turning out to be a very interesting juxtaposition. I just hope whatever happens romantically, the four will never stop being best buddies.

  • Fight My Way: I never thought I’d say this but: why isn’t it Monday!? God, this show hurts so good. I’m so obsessed with this that I’ve pretty much been telling everyone I know (and some I don’t…) to tune in. The friendships are to die for, and Dong-man’s developing (instinctual?) love line with Ae-ra is everything. Let’s not kid ourselves though, they’re both nuts; but there’s something so perfect about their I’m-with-you-150%-even-if-it-kills-us-both relationship, that pulls me in and grabs me like a death grip in the best way. I’ll take two more servings please.

TeriYaki
  • Fight My Way: I couldn’t make it past the first 15 minutes when I first checked out this drama, but I tried again a few days later and I’m so glad that I did. Park Seo-joon and Kim Ji-won anchor the story with their chemistry, but I love the extended cast as well. The writer has vividly portrayed that stage of life where youthful dreams clash with the reality of day to day life. I can’t help but root for everyone to get their happily ever after.

Fight My Way: Episode 5

FightMyWay05-00192.jpg&key=03a6c4b3a912a

True friends have each other’s backs when it counts, even when they don’t think they need the backup. Dong-man and Ae-ra are always ready and willing to go to battle for each other, whether or not the other even wants the help. Sometimes it can actually make things worse, but they wouldn’t be best friends if they didn’t drive each other around the bend on a regular basis.

Round 5: “It’s okay, even if you’re joblessâ€

Ae-ra sends Hye-ran away with a warning: Stay away from Dong-man, or else. Hye-ran doesn’t seem intimidated, and she coos at Dong-man one last time before going on her way. Dong-man never says a word, but when he goes inside and finds a text saying that she’s missed him, he angrily throws his things across the room. Coach Hwang comes to see Dong-man, who’s all smiles again at the idea of fighting again. Ae-ra runs across the video of Dong-man kicking Tak-soo and slams out of her apartment to give him a piece of her mind. She spots them talking and, HA, Coach Hwang hides from her in his truck.

FightMyWay05-00047.jpg&key=45629a7613cd6 FightMyWay05-00054.jpg&key=312af890df688

When she demands an explanation, Dong-man tells Ae-ra that he’s definitely decided to get into mixed martial arts. She blames Coach Hwang for his newfound enthusiasm, and Coach Hwang looks terrified and goes into a blocking position when she lunges at him. It doesn’t help that Dong-man is whispering to Ae-ra that Coach Hwang totally lured him in, hoping to deflect her fury. She forbids Dong-man from hanging out with Coach Hwang, ordering him to be at her store at lunchtime today.

Coach Hwang reminds Dong-man that they have a special session, but Ae-ra snarls that Dong-man had better not make her come after him. She’s so scary that Coach Hwang tells Dong-man to do as she says, heh. Meanwhile, Tak-soo’s coach is doing damage control with his sponsors, but he still loses two advertisement deals. His manager, Tae-hee, suggests a revenge match to swing the public’s favor back to Tak-soo, but Tak-soo just whines like the spoiled brat he is.

During a television interview, the reporter also mentions a revenge match. Tak-soo says that Dong-man is nothing but a neighborhood thug, but Tae-hee grumbles from the wings that Tak-soo is just scared. Watching the interview on TV, Dong-man grows angry at Tak-soo’s insults. Tak-soo says on camera that he’ll accept Dong-man’s challenge if Dong-man wins an amateur fight, but Coach Hwang refuses to allow it and tells Dong-man to just keep training.

FightMyWay05-00097.jpg&key=4ef24e2bdfd92 FightMyWay05-00101.jpg&key=af2f29676f639

He doesn’t think Dong-man is ready for a fight, but Dong-man argues that all of his jobs since he quit training have kept him in good physical shape. Coach says that Taekwondo and mixed martial arts are different, and that if Dong-man tries to fight now, he’ll only get hurt.

Ae-ra finally gets up the nerve to send her resume to KBC’s open enrollment for announcers. Manager Kim, who went to bat for Ae-ra when she lost the announcer job, brings her an energy drink and promises that if the position opens again, he’ll do what he can to get it for her. She tells him that if he feels guilty about it, then he should make it up for it now, asking for an introduction to the head of security. Manager Kim jumps to the worst possible conclusion, hissing, “He’s married!â€

FightMyWay05-00151.jpg&key=556e76ce4c6ca FightMyWay05-00153.jpg&key=c959f8b5cf378

But she only wants to get Dong-man a job, touting him as a man of character with a black belt in Taekwondo. She even admits that he’s handsome, saying that their security guards should look good in their suits. With Manager Kim’s help, they convince the head of security to give Dong-man a chance.

Fight My Way: Episode 6

FightMyWay06-00173.jpg

There’s nothing like having a friend who just gets you in every way possible, who cries with you when you’re down and celebrates your successes as if they were their own. The only thing better would be if that friend were also the love of your life, and luckily for Ae-ra and Dong-man, they’ve already started down that path. Even luckier for us is that they have no idea what these new and strange feelings are about, because we get to enjoy the awkward moments every time one of them gets all hot and bothered and has no idea why.

Round 6: “Dear, don’t give me that kissâ€

FightMyWay06-00026.jpg FightMyWay06-00028.jpg

After losing his fight, Dong-man wakes in the hospital to find Ae-ra wailing over him at top volume. Ae-ra yells at him not to fight anymore, making soggy threats never to see him again in between gasping sobs. Amused, Dong-man asks if Moo-bin knows that she looks like a baboon when she cries, HA.

Ae-ra just snaps at him again before bursting into a fresh bout of tears. Dong-man fusses at her for eating her hair and reaches to push it out of her mouth, which is so sweet.

The mood is ruined by ex-girlfriend Hye-ran, who runs in to ask in a wobbly voice if Dong-man is okay, though her voice is perfectly stable when she tells Ae-ra to leave. For the first time, Dong-man speaks in Hye-ran’s presence, taking Ae-ra’s hand and saying that Hye-ran is the one who needs to leave. He adds for her to stop contacting him and showing up at his home.

FightMyWay06-00041.jpg

He calls it horrible to keep seeing her, but Hye-ran just says that she’ll go for now. Ae-ra reminds her of her warning not to go near Dong-man again, and Hye-ran tells Ae-ra to know her place, and that Dong-man is only holding Ae-ra’s hand to make a point, not because he wants to hold it. She tells Dong-man to pick up when she calls, otherwise she’ll take it as an invitation to visit in person.

After she leaves, Ae-ra yanks her hand out of Dong-man’s grip, asking if he really only held her hand to make Hye-ran angry. Exhausted, Dong-man pouts that he doesn’t know.

On the way home, Dong-man remembers that Hye-ran waited for him while he was in the army. Ae-ra says that she saw Hye-ran with other guys while he was gone, then complains that Dong-man will probably let Hye-ran sucker him in again.

FightMyWay06-00080.jpg FightMyWay06-00077.jpg

Coach Hwang drives up, and Ae-ra orders him to kill Dong-man. Coach Hwang looks like he’s ready to make him pay for fighting against his advice. But instead of getting hit as Dong-man expects, Coach Hwang grabs him in a big, relieved bear-hug. He says that Dong-man’s lucky to be alive, then takes him to a pojangmacha for some dinner. While they eat, Coach Hwang watches the video of Dong-man’s fight. Rather than being upset over his loss, Coach Hwang notices that the one punch Dong-man managed to land really shook up his opponent. He knows by the fighter’s tattoo that he’s a member of the Karel family.

We see the tattoo again as Karel shakes hands with Tak-soo at the airport, and Tak-soo tells him that he sent the money for his wife’s medical bills. In halting English, Karel tells Tak-soo to avoid Dong-man at all costs, “because you will lose,†but Tak-soo doesn’t understand him. Coach Hwang explains to Dong-man that the Karels are a three-generation family of Brazilian jujitsu fighters, and that last night he fought the second son. He likens Dong-man’s punch to a kindergartner landing a punch on a college student—it means that Dong-man is a lot better than they thought.

Not only did he land a solid punch, but Tak-soo’s coach says that that punch broke two of the Brazilian fighter’s ribs. It’s even more worrisome that it wasn’t one of Dong-man’s famous kicks that did it, but a punch. Joo-man reluctantly sends Seol-hee to put in an appearance at his nephew’s first birthday party, then heads off to work. The girls run into Dong-man, who’s more excited than ever about fighting.

FightMyWay06-00141.jpg FightMyWay06-00147.jpg

Seol-hee fishes for a compliment in her lacy pink dress, so Ae-ra obliges by saying that she looks like the perfect daughter-in-law. She says that parents love the “puppy type†like Seol-hee, and Seol-hee says that Ae-ra is the “kitten type†that guys like. They preen, while Dong-man stares like they’re speaking another language.

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

javabeans

  • Fight My Way: This show remains breezy and enjoyable, but I actually thought my interest would be growing more intense and am surprised that it’s kind of just steady—present, but not increasing. Maybe it’s because there are so many shows right now that I’m feeling really sucked in by the ones with strong plots, and this one is way more about characters and gradual growth. I know this sounded like a negative, but I still have warm fuzzies about this show.

girlfriday

  • Fight My Way: This is pretty much an entire show about how embarrassing life can be, and I love that. The embarrassments are true to life, hilarious because they’re so mortifying, and touching because they’re so relatable.

gummimochi

  • Fight My Way: I told myself I would watch three shows maximum this cycle. Period. And then I added another Monday-Tuesday show to my plate. There are no regrets, however, because I envy how close Ae-ra and Dong-man are (both as friends and in the brewing romance).

tineybeanie

  • Fight My Way: Ae-ra and Dong-man as children are adorable together. I wish more of the childhood moments were incorporated into the larger scheme of the show, instead of staying in the epilogues. I like their grownup chemistry as well, even though it’s not sizzling hot. Their feelings toward each other are like twelve-year-old crushes at this point, both hesitant to be caught because they’re not sure of how the other person would react. But it is cute, and I already know they’re going to end up together even with Hye-ran and Moo-bin significantly complicating matters. So I’m not too worried about our main couple, but now my heart is slowly ripping for Seol-hee. Half of me wants Joo-man to be honest in his interactions with the cute intern so that he can see what the grass is like on the other side, and come back when he realizes that Seol-hee is truly the only one for him. At the same time, that would be a complete disservice to her, because she’s been so faithful and amazingly sweet as a girlfriend. So I have conflicting feelings on how I think would be the healthiest way for their relationship to progress, which keeps me on my toes until the next episode where I see or don’t see my speculations play out.

Laica

  • Fight My Way: Last week this show made me cry and squeal, but this week I found myself boiling with anger—not at the drama, which I love, but at its second leads. Ex-girlfriend Hye-ran is a new level of shameless diva, and I hate the way she treats both Dong-man and Ae-ra. It was satisfying to hear him finally tell Hye-ran to get lost, but I wish that Ae-ra could have heard it too. Moo-bin’s been rubbing me the wrong way for a while, but I officially hate him after Episode 4. He’s a pushy, manipulative liar masquerading as a nice guy; the way he constantly ignores Ae-ra’s wishes makes me crazy. It also frustrates me that Ae-ra is passive in the face of his creepy advances when she normally has zero tolerance for people’s nonsense. And that kiss, when she was clearly not into it—ick. I’m so glad that Dong-man turned around in that hospital hallway, though; looks like we’re in for more brutal honesty between our leads, and I can’t wait.

TeriYaki

  • Fight My Way: Park Seo-joon and Kim Sung-oh had some great scenes this week as Dong-man’s training ramps up. Are they coach and athlete, big brother/little brother, or old friends? More like all of the above, and their bromance offsets Dong-man’s conflicted feelings about Ae-ra.

Fight My Way: Episode 7

FightMyWay07-00125.jpg

It seems as though everyone is lying to everyone else lately—about their feelings, their actions, and they’re even lying to themselves. So many lies can’t possibly be sustainable, and things are about to blow wide open in a big way. Hopefully that just means that the truth can’t be far behind, though where that truth will take our four friends and their relationships is anyone’s guess.

Round 7: “Who on earth are you looking at?â€

FightMyWay07-00025.jpg

Dong-man walks in on Moo-bin kissing Ae-ra, and with an expression of hurt and betrayal, he slams the hospital door and turns to leave. But then he stops himself, turns, and storms back. Throwing the door wide open, Dong-man barges in and asks, “Are you two dating?!†and Moo-bin stammers that they’re not. Dong-man demands to know why he was kissing Ae-ra, telling Moo-bin that he should make the relationship status clear before kissing her.

Moo-bin tells Dong-man to drop the “friends†act, asking if Dong-man likes Ae-ra, and Ae-ra watches for Dong-man’s answer with great interest. Flustered, Dong-man gulps, then blurts out, “I’m her guardian!†Ae-ra grinds her teeth, muttering that she could stab him, ha. Dong-man warns Moo-bin not to cross the line or he’ll lose his temper, so Ae-ra asks why he’s so angry. She asks if there’s some reason she can’t date Moo-bin, who does things to impress her and calls her a goddess. Dong-man says that that’s how he knows Moo-bin is a fraud, because Ae-ra is no goddess. Oh sweetie, I know what you’re trying to say, but it’s time to stop talking.

Dong-man tells Ae-ra to keep her distance from Moo-bin, but she asks why she should do that when Moo-bin likes her so much. Dong-man has no ready answer for that, so Ae-ra asks, “Why, do you like me?†Dong-man’s brain shorts out again, as it always does when he gets flustered by Ae-ra. He yells, “I like you!†but he adds that she, Joo-man, and Seol-hee are all important to him. Ae-ra tells him that as a friend, he should congratulate her, because she and Moo-bin are now officially dating.

FightMyWay07-00072.jpg FightMyWay07-00085.jpg

After relocating downstairs, Dong-man seethes and glares at Moo-bin and Ae-ra as they talk. Ae-ra apologizes for making that sudden announcement, but Moo-bin is tickled to death, even though Ae-ra admits that she’s not head over heels for him. He says she can’t take it back now, and he asks for those ten dates again.

He puckers up for another kiss, and Ae-ra leans away looking uncomfortable. Dong-man yells a loud “HEY!!†and throws a rock at Moo-bin, because he is apparently twelve years old, and growls that they need to get a cab and get home.

When the cab arrives, Dong-man jumps in beside Ae-ra, which has Moo-bin squawking that he should sit in the front seat. Dong-man rolls down the window just enough to shoot Moo-bin a smug glare as they drive off, HAHA.

FightMyWay07-00090.jpg FightMyWay07-00089.jpg

They stop to eat at Coach Hwang’s soondae truck, where Dong-man pesters Ae-ra about her new dating status. She explains that she didn’t like Moo-bin much at the beginning either, but he grew on her. Dong-man repeats that Moo-bin seems fake and weird to him, wondering how he could call Ae-ra a goddess. Ae-ra asks dryly if he’s ever been slapped while eating, ha.

She tells Dong-man that life is too short not to have fun dating, and that she needs more than just a guy friend. She says she wants someone sweet and forward, someone that’s just hers.

Ae-ra’s love life is the primary topic of conversation over breakfast the next morning. Joo-man marvels that Dong-man and Moo-bin keep competing for the same girls, remembering Bo-ram from high school, but it’s news to the dense Dong-man that Moo-bin liked her, too.

FightMyWay07-00756.jpg

The four friends head to the bus stop together, and when Dong-man hears Ae-ra mention a possible date and Seol-hee ask if she’s going to stay out all night, he tells her to come home early. She says she’ll think about it, then pointedly tells him she’ll see him tomorrow when his bus arrives. He runs back to yank out her hairband when Seol-hee says she looks pretty in a ponytail, because as previously noted, he is apparently twelve years old.

Landlady Hwang seems to be in the market for a new building, and one of the places she looks at is Coach Hwang’s gym. The realtor says it’s a bad investment, but she asks him to contact her first if it’s ever on the market.

Ae-ra looks into announcing school, where she’s told that with her lack of experience plus her age, she’ll need to take the premium classes, which are taught by famous announcers. This is Hye-ran’s cue to waltz into the room, and she and Ae-ra exchange eye-daggers as Ae-ra remembers how they used to compete for jobs when they were both interviewing as rookies. Hye-ran got her first job by calling one of the executives “oppa,†and later upgraded by calling someone even higher up the chain “father.â€

FightMyWay07-00167.jpg

Hye-ran finds Ae-ra to ask if she’s really going to try for an announcer job, calling her brave but somehow making it sound like an insult. They leave at the same time, and Moo-bin picks up Ae-ra at the curb for their first official date. He seems to recognize Hye-ran, who keeps her face turned away.
