How was everyone’s week in dramaland? Did any shows get particularly exciting this week? I like to read what Beanies are saying in the What We’re Watching threads to know if a show I dropped suddenly got better and I’m missing out, or if I got out just in time to save myself some aggravation. It would just bug me if I never knew! FOMO is real, people. â€“girlfriday

  • Fight My Way: I liked the families as they were, with everyone having a gruff, adorable parent or two to fight with, so I don’t think this show needed to add birth secrets. I suppose they could pull out some emotional reunions and make it worthwhile, but in the final week I’d rather focus on the foursome doing some soul-searching and growing up. And Joo-man needs to do some more groveling.

  • Fight My Way: Dear dramalord, thank you. Finally, Joo-man is realizing what an amazing girlfriend he had in Seol-hee, and that his attraction to the intern was largely based on his initial fluttering feelings for a younger Seol-hee. I wish he would get it through his thick skull that he hasn’t completely lost her yet, and try to fight for her again. But of course, these things take time, and I like that he’s going through some emotional hardship. Yay for drama karma kicking in, and delivering satisfying retribution! On the other hand, I’ve almost lost all interest in the main couple because there doesn’t seem to be an interesting conflict in their respective character growths. I guess things will change now that Dong-man has (maybe temporarily) lost his hearing, but this week was largely a stagnant period for them, I think.

  • Fight My Way: I still love this show, but I’m not dying to know what happens next anymore. I actually like the inverse relationship between the two couples, so I don’t think my cooling interest has to do with the increased attention on Seol-hee and Joo-man. I think it might be due to that fact that Dong-man and Ae-ra’s paths to success seemed a bit formulaic and fairytale-like for my taste. I understand that they both have great talent, and that’s why their dreams are immediately feasible despite their lackluster resumes, and I love the message that sometimes you just need to be brave enough to try, but simplifying the process of success against the odds is less satisfying. I don’t have the same problem with Joo-man and Seol-hee since their dreams were always so tied up with each other, but I sometimes worry that if they do get back together in the end, does that mean Ae-ra and Dong-man don’t make it?

AR interviews a fighter on tv. DM regains his hearing. Lady Hwang visits a man.

(AR interviewing another fighter.)
AR: What I am curious about is that I had heard you had hurt your shoulder. Aren’t you afraid of going back into the ring again?
Fighter: Since it’s only this much, I’m lucky.
AR: Lucky?
Fighter: Thinking of Sam Vasquez or Gary Goodridge, it is scary. (Sam Vasquez died in the ring. Gary Goodridge developed dementia from too many hits to the head)
AR: Why those athletes?

(Later in DM’s apartment)
AR: (speaking very loudly) I’m defrosting a porridge in the fridge, so make sure you eat it. Don’t just lie there, not eating anything…
(DM comes up and backhugs AR)
DM: Yah. Why are you making such a racket and shouting?
(AR turns around to look at him)
AR: You can hear? Can you hear everything now?
DM: Yes, I can hear everything now. I could hear you every bit of you making a racket just now.
AR: Oh, you enemy-like thing. Really.
(DM hugs AR again)
DM: I was really scared. Really scared.

(Lady Hwang walks into the office of a man)
Lady Hwang: How have you been?
(Lady Hwang and the man are both sitting in his office)
Lady Hwang: You look well.
Man: I looked for you everywhere.
(Man kneels to Lady Hwang)

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching???

How did the finales stack up for you this week? There were a number of shows to say goodbye to, and I’m always surprised by how differently I’ll feel about a show at the beginning and at the end of it. Were there any dramas that you were particularly sad to part with, or have you already cleared the way for something new? â€“girlfriday

  • Fight My Way: I really enjoyed the small stories and the everydayness of four friends going to work and figuring out relationships and messing things up while finding their place in the world. It felt normal and comforting, and even though I think success for our characters came a little too easily plotwise over the course of our drama, I never felt that it came easily character-wise—looking back on the years they’d struggled in the past made their successes feel rightfully earned with every drop of sweat accounted for. This show just hit a really relatable note for me, and it got extra points for always bringing the funny.

  • Fight My Way: Overall, I really enjoyed this refreshing, realistic, and modern rom-com. Loved the zippy and oftentimes poignant writing as well as the cast, and I loved laughing with the motley crew every week. The only aspect that I wasn’t satisfied with was the Hwang Bok-hee storyline; it really wasn’t necessary, and I just think it’s a stretch for a mom that’s been MIA for all of Ae-ra’s life to suddenly be so chummy with her so quickly. Anyway, I burst out laughing when Seol-hee’s burly brothers appeared, and I’m probably going to miss sweet and quietly strong Seol-hee the most. Fight My Way wasn’t perfect, but it did consistently bring a smile to my face.

  • Fight My Way: Ae-ra and Dong-man’s reason for breaking up was such a non-issue. His dream to be a martial arts fighter and his love for his craft is such an integral part of who Dong-man is, that if Ae-ra wants him to give that up, she’s essentially telling him to stop being himself. Without how fighting has shaped his identity, Dong-man wouldn’t be the man that Ae-ra loves today so it’s a catch-22 scenario. Does she want the real Dong-man or just his shell? Ugh, and the deus ex machina resolution of his tinnitus seemed too convenient; I think instead of suddenly barraging us with a whole bunch of birth secret reveals in the last episodes, it might have been better to explore the wealth of conflict related to how physical disability could prevent dreams from happening, and that would have been a much more nuanced and complex arc than this general upward easy trend we’ve been seeing in their trajectories these past weeks. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good happy ending, but it just feels so much more gratifying when there are substantial obstacles that are overcome to get to it.

Laica

  • Fight My Way: Aww, it’s over. I’ll miss these lovable, gorgeous, heartwarming idiots. The last few episodes didn’t have the electric, heart-pounding feels of the first half, but the show left me with a warm feeling and I was happy with where the characters ended up—so I count it as a win.

  • 2 weeks later...

[interview] Kim Ji-won, "I'm not as cute as Choi Aera but I wish I have a guy friend like Ko Dongman"

photo872023.jpg

"I'm very satisfied with the ending! I'm glad it was a happy ending with a marriage. It would have been heart aching for me if Ae-ra and Dong-man's break up was long since the beginning of the drama had a lot of happy memories of them".

As the drama "Fight My Way" ended this month, actress Kim Ji-won, who played the lovable Choi Ae-ra, shared her feelings about the ending. She also expressed her gratitude saying, "This drama was my first main character role, and it's first time that I had this much part in the drama from the beginning to the end. I had my worries but since the script was so interesting, I expected great outcome. Which, we were loved by many, so, I'm grateful".

Along with the success of "Fight My Way", the opposite sex friendship is becoming a thing again. About that, she commented, "I don't really have a lot of guy friends but I acted thinking how I wish to have a guy friend like Ko Dong-man. I think a lot of viewers agreed to that thinking".

Kim Ji-won said the biggest charm of Ae-ra is her honesty.

"I think her honesty and bravery is her charm points. When I read the script for the first time, that's the impression I got from her. She say everything on her mind and doesn't hold grudges".

As she explained her character, Ae-ra's charm points, she spent even more time explaining Dong-man's charm points.

"Dong-man is childish at times, yet quite macho at other times. His martial arts scenes were really cool too. He is cute, sweet to his girlfriend, athletic… overall a charming character".

The interviewer asked Kim Ji-won, "What if your real-life boyfriend wants to get into a dangerous sports like the mixed marital arts?" and she answered, "That's a dilemma for sure. However, at the end, I should support his dream".

When she was asked about her partner, actor Park Seo-joon, she happily replied, "It was first time working with him, yet alone meeting him. However, we were each other's fan from the previous dramas we've done, so it was easy to get along with him. From the scenes where the two argues like the good ol' friends do, to all the romantic scenes. About kiss scenes, as expected from the Romcom King, he led me well".

photo872027.jpg

In the show, Choi Ae-ra is professional on the stage, yet so lovely off stage, when she's with her friends. "Actually, I, myself discovered the leadership side of me for the first time here. The staffs joked saying I should host our drama events. (laugh) For the cutesy part… I actually am not like that in real life. When I first read the script, I didn't understand some of the lines where she gets all cutesy. I was a bit nervous about those scenes but thankfully, a lot of people liked it".

For the most memorable scene, she picked the scene where she courageously states her belief at the announcer job interview. She said, "Regarding my job as an actress, I had to do a lot of audition and job interviews also, and failed many a times. So, I could emphasize with Ae-ra".

As Kim Ji-won debuted in 2010 as a CF model, she's been in a lot of different movies and dramas, but it was only recently that she started to get on the stardom.

"It's been 7 years since my debut, but having constant works flowing in, I've always worked with happy heart. There wasn't a time where it was overwhelming. I'm happy to receive so much love lately and grateful for it but I want to give myself the score of 50. I think the other half should be progressively filled with future works".

For her next move, she chose the movie "Detective K 3". It's her first historical show.

She said regarding her new role, "Since it's my first experience for a historical show, it's a bit challenging with different tone and clothing but I'll trust the director and my senior actors and diligently follow their ways! Please cheer for my new image".
