  • Fight My Way: Episode 9

FightMyWay09-00227.jpg

  • I’ve been on pins and needles all week waiting to see what happens next, and I’m definitely not disappointed. Almost all of our friends experience bursts of positive growth, making decisions about their relationships that will permanently change their futures. One of the best things about this show is that it gives you exactly what you want, just in a way you didn’t expect. It’s so refreshing to get all of the tropes I count on in a rom-com, but in a way that still manages to pleasantly surprise me.

Round 9: “Youth is only youth when you cause troubleâ€

FightMyWay09-00019.jpg

Ae-ra sneaks into Dong-man’s fight, and she overhears the ladies sitting in front of her gushing over the new handsome fighter. She objects when one of them zooms in on Dong-man’s fine form, though Ae-ra is mostly upset that the woman plans to video Dong-man getting beat up. She sees Hye-ran enter surrounded by reporters, and then the fight starts.

Ae-ra watches nervously as Dong-man takes some hard hits right at the beginning. After a few seconds she can’t take anymore and ducks her head, claps her hands over her ears, and waits for the horror to end. She flinches at the bell, but she can’t bear to look up and see Dong-man beaten to a pulp.

But a hand taps her knee and she opens her eyes to see him peering up at her, perfectly fine. Ae-ra tearfully asks if he has to do this, and Dong-man smiles and says, “I’m in trouble. Now you look pretty even when you cry.â€

fight9-00017a.jpg

Ignoring the screaming crowd, Dong-man stands and offers his hand to Ae-ra. She tentatively holds out a finger which he grasps, teasing that she’s acting like such a girl. He leads her through the arena right past Hye-ran, and once alone, Dong-man asks if she’s holding his hand like that because she’s feeling fluttery.

He admits that she’s not the only one who’s feeling that way, and his previous cool falters a bit. Dong-man says that somehow, he only saw her tonight in the arena, and that she’s becoming pretty to his eyes. He continues that even though he used to only think about things like putting her in a headlock and mooning her (hee), now whenever they touch, it feels like skinship. He takes her hand in his.

Ae-ra looks up, confused, and he says that when she looks at him like that, he sometimes wants to kiss her. She’s flustered by his honesty, and Dong-man pleads with her, asking if she thinks about those things, too. Ae-ra begs him to keep those thoughts to himself but she doesn’t drop his hand… and suddenly someone takes Dong-man’s other hand, and they look up to see Coach Hwang standing there clasping Dong-man’s hand, on the verge of tears. HAHA. After agreeing to marry once Joo-man gets his promotion, he and Seol-hee exit their bus to find his admirer Ye-jin standing there. She’s heard Seol-hee calling Joo-man by a lovers’ endearment, but instead of freaking out, she kicks off her shoes and lies down on the bench for a nap.

fight9-00057.jpg

A few minutes later Seol-hee sits with Ye-jin’s head in her lap, checking out her rival’s pretty features up close. Ye-jin wakes and asks why Joo-man helped her with the copier, then she lies back down whining that she really liked him. Awww, she’s obviously been drinking, and she’s pretty pitiful.

Joo-man comes back from getting Ye-jin an energy drink to wake her up, and Seol-hee bristles at his attentiveness. Luckily Ye-jin’s mother calls her phone, so they ask her to pick up her daughter. She’s a sweet lady, but it’s strange how she only looks at Joo-man and says that she hopes to see him again.

Coach Hwang drives Dong-man and Ae-ra home, and Dong-man teases him for being a crybaby. Ae-ra realizes that the guys need some time alone and heads to her place, leaving Dong-man looking a bit freaked out at having to deal with Coach’s tears.

FightMyWay09-00107.jpg FightMyWay09-00108.jpg

Coach says soggily that he’s followed Dong-man around for ten years, but tonight he saw him fly again for the first time. Awww. He tells Dong-man to be good to him and repay him with a life of luxury someday, then insists on a hug. Dong-man reluctantly submits to the most awkward hug ever, worried someone will see them and get the wrong idea, but it makes Coach Hwang sohappy.

They jump apart when a voice barks, “Move your car!†It’s Landlady Hwang, who tells them that she doesn’t judge, but they should move their car before continuing with what they were doing. PFFT. Coach Hwang looks a bit stunned by her, sure that he’s seen her somewhere before.

Tak-soo goes into a workout frenzy after seeing Dong-man’s fight in person. Coach Choi and Tae-hee mutter that it’s no wonder Tak-soo tried so hard to block Dong-man from fighting, because he’s that good.

FightMyWay09-00130.jpg

The next morning, Joo-man, Seol-hee, and Ae-ra take turns feeding Dong-man, their new star, who milks it for all it’s worth. Ae-ra is a bit miffed that all of the articles about Dong-man’s fight and how he went to her afterward only mention her as “a fan†and blur out her face. But she’s more concerned about her announcer interview tomorrow at a KBC satellite station, determined to knock this one out of the park.

Fight My Way: Episode 10

FightMyWay10-00049.jpg

  • One step forward, two steps back… Just when it was looking like everyone was making some fantastic strides towards maturity and honesty, events conspire to put them back in their places. It’s frustrating to watch two couples who can’t just say what they’re feeling, bad or good, because by trying to avoid the risk of being hurt themselves, they only end up hurting each other. But some people manage to push forward despite that, and there’s plenty of cuteness to go around too, making the frustrating moments completely worth the pain.

Round 10: “Some or whateverâ€

The ringing phone wakes Ae-ra in her motel room, and she looks over to see Dong-man sleeping next to her. She checks under the covers and gasps, then pops Dong-man in the forehead, jarring him awake painfully.

Ae-ra also sits up, revealing that she’s still in her bathrobe. She barks at Dong-man for sleeping shirtless in her room, and he covers himself primly, saying that she was in the mood to drink. She snaps back that he said he’d leave when Coach Hwang returned to the motel. He keeps asking her over and over, “Do you really not remember?â€

Ae-ra does remember something… She watched Dong-man sleeping late into the night, and reached out to softly touch his face. She whispered out loud, “Why do you have to be so handsome? You make me so tense.â€

FightMyWay10-00024.jpg

She grazed his face, and then when she reached his lips, Ae-ra leaned in close as if to kiss him. But she backed off at the last moment and turned her back. Behind her, Dong-man opened his eyes, having been awake the whole time.

Then later into the night, Dong-man watched Ae-ra sleep, incredulous that she could sleep at a time like this. In her sleepy haze, she slid an arm over him and snuggled close, making Dong-man forget to breathe. He looked down at her face and reached out to push her hair off her forehead, and she sighed and cuddled even closer.

Once he recovered for the second time, Dong-man leaned over to place the tiniest of kisses on Ae-ra’s forehead. He closed his eyes and drifted off, and a while later he grew hot and pulled his shirt off in his sleep.

FightMyWay10-00074.jpg fight10-00009.jpg

In the morning, he complains about Ae-ra blowing her hot breath on his face, revealing that he felt her touching his face, but Ae-ra tells him to forget it. Dong-man refuses, so Ae-ra goes on the offensive and asks why he’s bare-chested. He doesn’t know, and he gives Ae-ra a cheeky look and asks if shetook his shirt off.

There’s a sudden knock at the door, and Dong-man assumes it’s Coach Hwang and goes to answer. But whoever it is has Dong-man rearing back in terror as Ae-ra shakes her head in horrified denial. She narrates that in life, timing is always terrible. One hour prior to the motel door opening, we see four people descending upon Daecheon at the same time. Dong-man’s acquaintance Kyung-ku travels on a work-related excuse, and Hye-ran grows angrier as her calls to Dong-man go unanswered. Ae-ra’s father has decided to surprise her by coming to see her emcee today, but all we see of the fourth person is a pair of gold high heels.

Thirty minutes before the door opens, Ae-ra’s dad arrives at the event stage, worried that Ae-ra isn’t picking up her phone. He finds the director talking to Coach Hwang and says he’s the MC’s father, so Coach introduces himself. Coach Hwang walks Ae-ra’s dad to the motel, complimenting him on his strong daughter. He says that he’s more scared of Ae-ra than any other woman in the world, then he slips and calls her “Microphone Wacko†(his nickname for her), making Dad bristle at him.

FightMyWay10-00105.jpg

As they enter the motel lobby, a woman in gold heels quickly slips into the office. She frog-hops across the room, trying to avoid being seen, and HAHA, it’s Landlady Hwang. She shows photos of Dong-man and Ae-ra to the clerk ajumma, who confirms that they stayed here last night.

Ten minutes before the motel door opens, Kyung-ku has found the event stage and is schmoozing the director to let him take pictures. He seems annoyed when the director gushes about Dong-man’s talent.

One minute before Ae-ra’s motel door opens, Coach Hwang and Ae-ra’s dad knock on her door, but nobody answers. The other fighter, Doo-ho, comes out of his room and tells them that Dong-man didn’t sleep in his room. Coach mutters that he didn’t sleep in his room, either.

FightMyWay10-00124.jpg fight10-00016.jpg

It dawns on all of them simultaneously where Dong-man must have slept. Ae-ra’s dad pounds on her door furiously, and when it opens, they’re as shocked to see Dong-man as he is to see them. Ae-ra’s dad takes in the scene—shirtless Dong-man, Ae-ra in bed—and assumes the worst.

Dong-man tries to escape, begging Coach Hwang with his eyes to help him, but Ae-ra’s dad tells him in a too-calm voice to close the door. Dad starts taking off his watch and shirt, revealing a scary-looking tattoo on his shoulder… of Ae-ra’s name and birthdate (heh). Coach reaches out to dramatically caress Dong-man’s face one last time, then Dong-man resolutely turns to accept his fate.

FightMyWay10-00148.jpg

Unable to find Dong-man’s motel, Hye-ran instead takes a seat at the show venue. She eavesdrops on the director talking about how great Ae-ra was yesterday, and how she’ll be a star.

Landlady Hwang makes her way upstairs, and she presses her ear to Ae-ra’s motel door alongside Coach Hwang. Coach seems to recognize her, and he starts to ask, “How are you… “ but a loud THWAP from inside the room makes them both cringe.

FightMyWay10-00172.jpg fight10-00027.jpg

Ae-ra’s dad delivers a solid beating to Dong-man with a coat hanger as Dong-man whines that Ae-ra already hits him all the time. Dad asks what he’s after by sleeping here, and Dong-man promises that even if the two of them were stranded on a desert island, he’d only consider her like a native or a monkey. Dad snarls, asking what’s wrong with Ae-ra, and Dong-man resigns himself to another beating.

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching??!

Checking in for another weekend wrap-up! It feels like it’s been the longest week ever, and I can’t figure out if keeping track of all of the dramas ever is what makes it feel so long, or if having lots of hours of drama goodness helps make the time fly by. Well, in either case I suppose I count myself lucky; there are worse ways to spend a week! â€“javabeans

javabeans

  • Fight My Way: Well, finally! I know I said I would love to see this couple being friends for a while, but I actually think they left the friend zone a long time ago and have been dancing around in the romance zone without actually doing anything about it, and that frustrated me. I still really dislike the second couple storyline even though I think they’re both decent people who care about each other and deserve good things. I just don’t really care to see this relationship play out, because I keep thinking they should just break up, figure things out, and then decide whether they want to get back together. Offscreen.

  • Fight My Way: This drama just makes me happy. Why is it that every time this hero says things like “I want to hold your hand†or “I want to kiss you,†it makes me more fluttery than the actual handholding or kissing? Oh and I really love gruff, overprotective Dad, all tatted up and willing to go to the ends of the earth to cheer on his daughter. He’s the best.

tineybeanie

  • Fight My Way: I squeal too much for this drama. I love how the main loveline is not necessarily based on an instant attraction that cannot be explained, but rather a slow deepening connection that resulted from years of support and friendship. The way Ae-ra and Dong-man are rediscovering each other all over again as potential mates is so cute because they’re so awkward and real-life about it. I have revised my opinion about Joo-man. He’s poop. If his aspirations in life are to be a show-off about his success, that’s completely fine, but abandoning his 6+ years solid, steady girlfriend to do so without even talking about it, that’s not okay. He’s being a coward for lying to her about the new intern girl, and he’s also being a bad partner by not taking an active role in making Seol-hee feel secure in their relationship.

  • Fight My Way: Episode 11fight11-00232.jpg

The hilarious awkwardness we were treated to last week is nothing compared to the secondhand cringeworthy, sugary goodness this episode delivers. As the lifelong besties try to adjust to their new status, they’ll have to navigate nosy friends and interfering neighbors in addition to their own insecurities. But not everything in the Villa is hearts and roses, and as one couple learns to find their footing, another may be about to lose theirs completely.

Round 11: “A real womanâ€

FightMyWay11-00007.jpg

Dong-man kisses Ae-ra, then tells her that this means they’re officially dating. She agrees with a stunned nod, and he kisses her again.

A while later they sit on the beach, feeling a bit awkward. Ae-ra asks why Dong-man was so impulsive and manly back there, and he says that it wasn’t impulsive, admitting that he’s been able to do nothing but stare at her lips for a while now.

FightMyWay11-00035.jpg FightMyWay11-00041.jpg

Nervous that Ae-ra might change her mind, he orders her not to date anyone else, or sit next to men on the bus. He tells her not to even think of any other men, particularly not that first love of hers: “Only think of me.†Ae-ra comes clean that Wrist Guy, her stupid jerkface first love of twenty years, is actually Dong-man. He blinks and stammers, surprised, and she says that he’s sort of like that pimple on her forehead that comes and goes, hurts then doesn’t.

She asks him to stop being her guy friend, because she feels like she’ll die if they go back after he kissed her like that. Dong-man calls her an idiot and says that she should have just kissed him and he’d have fallen for her instantly. Ae-ra shyly asks if he liked it, and he just as shyly asks if she wants to kiss again. She does.

fight11-00016.jpg

Nearby, Coach Hwang and Landlady Hwang set off more fireworks. Landlady Hwang makes a face at the lovebirds, then asks Coach to shoot his firecrackers at them. Hee.

At the villa the next morning, Dong-man and Joo-man discover that they’re getting a new neighbor. They wonder at all the fancy furniture, which doesn’t seem to suit their building at all. Oh no, I’m getting a bad feeling…

FightMyWay11-00072.jpg

Seol-hee watches Ae-ra getting all fancied up in her at-home sweats, rolling the shirt up to show off her midriff and wearing a headband. Ae-ra insists that this is her normal outfit for taking out the trash, getting huffy when Seol-hee asks if anything happened with Dong-man in Daecheon.

They head outside, where Ae-ra poses hilariously while tossing out the trash in front of Dong-man. Horrified at her exposed skin, he quickly unties her shirt. Seol-hee asks suspiciously if they’re going to spend the whole day together, and Dong-man fails to be casual when he says they are.

Joo-man suggests they all have some of Seol-hee’s plum wine after work. Before leaving, Seol-hee tells them not to “do it,†making Dong-man and Ae-ra cough guiltily. Then she adds, “The plum wine. Don’t open it.†HA.

FightMyWay11-00087.jpg FightMyWay11-00084.jpg

Landlady Hwang scares Dong-man again by popping up right behind him (that never gets old, lol), and she notes that the new tenant left rice cakes for all the other tenants except for Ae-ra. She says the tenant is a very famous announcer, and ugh, I think I know where this is going.

Sure enough, Hye-ran comes down the stairs to confront Ae-ra and Dong-man. She’s completely brazen about the fact that she’s moving into the apartment above Dong-man’s, saying that it’s so she can see him every day just like Ae-ra does.

Dong-man tells Hye-ran that he and Ae-ra are dating now and she accepts the news, saying that it’s good that he’s lost his best female friend. She says that she’ll move into the vacant spot left behind and ensure that Ae-ra knows exactly how annoying that friend can be.

  • Fight My Way: Episode 12FightMyWay12-00151.jpg

Being a grownup is exhausting, and sometimes you just want to do what you want and damn the consequences. There are times when the best thing to do is sit and wait, and times when the only thing to do is stand up and fight. For two of our friends, the time for waiting is over, and they’ll have to decide whether they’re willing to roll over and give up on their dreams, or if it’s time to fly.

Round 12: “If dreams disappear as you mature, then I… â€

FightMyWay12-00009.jpg

Up on the roof, Dong-man tells Ae-ra that he likes her so much it makes him crazy. He decides that if it’s got to be all or nothing, then he’ll go for “all.†He asks Ae-ra if she wants to sleep over tonight, and she goes wide-eyed with surprise.

We don’t hear her answer, but soon they’re heading downstairs through the secret door, and run right into Landlady Hwang and her son, Nam-il. She tells Dong-man and Ae-ra to drink and play on the roof all they want, so long as they play like children and not adults, and go back to their own homes afterward.

fight12-00019.jpg fight12-00027.jpg

Angry, Ae-ra stops fighting the nagging urge to talk back to her and blurts out, “We kissed up there.†HAHA, Dong-man looks utterly terrified, and behind Landlady Hwang, Nam-il gets the giggles. It’s adorable, and I suddenly like him a lot more.

When Joo-man helps Ye-jin carry a heavy box into her apartment, he drops the box’s corner on his toe, making it bleed. A few seconds later Ye-jin’s mother knocks on the door, demanding entry, so Ye-jin shoves Joo-man into her closet promising to let him out when her mother leaves. Ye-jin lets her mom in, and to her dismay, her mom turns on her favorite drama and settles in for a long evening.

Landlady Hwang and Nam-il follow Dong-man and Ae-ra downstairs as Ae-ra grumbles that the landlord has no right to dictate what they do. Landlady Hwang asks if they have the right to trespass on the roof. Dong-man politely suggests that Nam-il help his mother find a nice hobby, lol.

FightMyWay12-00056.jpg FightMyWay12-00052.jpg

Ae-ra whispers something to Dong-man that makes his eyes go wide. Landlady Hwang asks if she said she’d shower and come back, and from the happy look on Dong-man’s face, that’s exactly what she said. But Ae-ra just states that being told not to do something only makes a person want to do it even more.

She haughtily informs Landlady Hwang that she’s the one setting fires, making Landlady Hwang huff indignantly and Nam-il start laughing again. Dong-man and Ae-ra go into their apartments, and Nam-il says that he can see the resemblance, and why his mom stationed herself here.

fight12-00125.jpg fight12-00131.jpg

Dong-man runs around his apartment, cleaning up and making sure the bedframe is nice and strong, hee. He even Febreezes himself again, taking special care to Febreeze his abs as well. Meanwhile Ae-ra changes into her prettiest underthings and heads back to Dong-man’s place.

They’re adorably shy as they sit on Dong-man’s bed drinking soju. Finally Ae-ra takes the bull by the horns and leans over to kiss Dong-man, but she misses his lips in her nervousness, so he backs away.

1. [+6,762, -104] What a waste of Seol Hee's visuals.. Her styling doesn't fully showcase her beauty, I hope she gets a makeover asap. I never expected Reply's Jung Bong to pull off his character as Joo Man here

2. [+6,466, -140] Writer, at least give Seol Hee a handsome guy who looks like Park Bo Gum.. Or get Park Bo Gum to cameo for real, or let her end up with Nam Il.. You're being too mean on Seol Hee. Couldn't stand Joo Man and the foxy intern

5. [+904, -10] Looking at the foxy intern's identical behavior with Seol Hee, I think she got them from Seol Hee's blog. Long before Joo Man and Seol Hee came out, she already knew that they were dating. She lurked on her blog. did some analyzing, and she started wearing pink and copying Seol Hee's tone

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

by DB Staff

  • I blinked and it’s suddenly July, which means that there’s a whole new crop of dramas appearing on the horizon. I’m actually a little sad that the current drama cycle is starting to wind down, because it’s a good batch of shows, and I think we all have the panda eyes to prove it. â€“girlfriday

girlfriday

  • Fight My Way: The girlfriends made me cry this week. There was just something about that flashback to their childhood, when we saw how little Seol-hee came over an hour early every day before school just to do Ae-ra’s hair because she didn’t have a mom—when Ae-ra described Seol-hee as her mom and her ocean, I cried. I was proud of both girls this week, and disappointed that Ae-ra was talked out of taking that plunger when they went to confront the cheating assholes.

tineybeanie

  • Fight My Way: Oh no! Seol-hee makes my heart hurt in all the right ways. All her work toward her dream of becoming a good mom has been destroyed and her world has been shattered, but her tears aren’t for herself, but for Joo-man because he cried. I both want to shake her for her inability to stand up for herself (well, up to this week’s episode), and hug her in a warm embrace for all the pain she’s going through, and I think Ae-ra feels the same, seeing the way she stood up for Seol-hee against Joo-man at the intern’s apartment lobby. I know this might not be a popular couple, but I’m interested in how they’ll figure out their problems and how it’ll pan out because I think it’s a realistic situation, where no one necessarily is morally a bad person (like Hye-ran), but everyone just has opposing interests that leads to pain.

DM - Was your dream to become an announcer or a microphone? (like a person who holds the mic and walks around)

AR - What?

DM - Honestly, announcer is not for you, a crazy girl should fly

Intern - Joo-man said even if it is the world's richest man's daughter, he will only love you. When he told me he doesn't like me, I thought he was just saying that, but~

Man Intern - Would you like to go there together next weekend? Maybe you are busy on the weekend? Of course you have a boyfriend.

AR - Should we tell her?

SH - Why are you guys sitting here and not going inside?

DM - Hey, Sul-ah, I will sleep with Aera tonight.

Love is a beautiful gift, but it doesn’t solve all of your problems and can even create brand new ones. As some of our villa residents are discovering, loving someone can be the very reason you can’t be together, because no amount of love can make your dreams for the future align. Thank goodness for good friends to help you drown your heartbroken sorrows.

Round 13: “Nam-il lives in Namil Villaâ€

Having established that they love each other, Ae-ra and Dong-man soon go back to arguing about whether he should fight Tak-soo. Ae-ra says that it’s because she loves Dong-man so much that she doesn’t want him to fight.

Dong-man counters that he’s willing to try even if he loses, otherwise he’ll just regret it for another ten years. But Ae-ra says that everyone online thinks he’ll lose, and that it won’t just be a loss, but a massacre.

Upset, Dong-man asks if Ae-ra, who knows him better than anyone, thinks he’ll lose to Tak-soo. Ae-ra says that it’s good that he’s fighting again — she only objects to him fighting Tak-soo. Almost pleading now, Dong-man tells her that his heart is finally racing after spending so many years with his head down. He asks Ae-ra to trust him, and she sighs heavily.

At their doors, Dong-man suddenly grabs Ae-ra’s wrist and pulls her into his apartment. He feeds her ddukbokki, saying that that conversation was work, and now is their personal time. Ae-ra grumbles that he’s never listened to her since they were kids, wondering out loud why he kisses her and says he loves her if he’s not going to listen.

Dong-man laughs at that and moves to stand in front of Ae-ra. She refuses to look at him, muttering that he’ll regret it and will end up singing his woes in a noraebang when she breaks up with him, heh. Dong-man just pulls her face to his and asks cutely, “Are you really going to dump me?â€

He gives her little kisses while she snarls at him to get lost. She vows to teach him manners, starting with the fact that his ranking is way below hers. Dong-man just pulls her into his arms and asks if her stomach hurts, then gives her a real kiss. RAWR.

After a minute Ae-ra taps out, and Dong-man asks if he’s still “down there†(ranked below her). HA, she can barely construct a coherent sentence after that kiss.

Joo-man gets caught in the act of leaving a pink stuffed bunny on the stoop when Seol-hee arrives home from work. He awkwardly gives her the bunny, then notices the paper she’s holding. She confirms that she’s looking for a new place to live, saying that it’s awkward to live so close after dating for six years.

She adds that she’s also looking for a new job, wanting to make a clean, quick break. The news hits Joo-man hard, but all he can do is sigh her name before she goes inside.

Ae-ra and Dong-man snuggle on his bed, though Dong-man warns Ae-ra not to fall asleep, since it would be awkward if Seol-hee found out about them. Seeing that she’s falling asleep anyway, Dong-man asks Ae-ra to sing him the song she sung in Daecheon.

She remembers the song that her father sung for her when she was a child, guessing that her mother taught it to him, and her face falls. Dong-man snuggles closer to comfort Ae-ra, though she says she’s okay because it’s been a long time, and she had him and Seol-hee. Ae-ra says that she doesn’t really miss her mother since she’s never met her, though she seems wistful.

The following morning, Joo-man’s mom visits to do laundry and bring him food, though his fridge is already full of food that Seol-hee left behind. She doesn’t know about the breakup, and she mentions that Seol-hee asked for an invitation to Joo-man’s sister’s housewarming party. Joo-man yells that they probably only invited her to make her do dishes.

When our characters have spent their entire adult lives dealing with the disappointment of their unrealized dreams, there’s no way to predict how they’ll react when those dreams suddenly become possible. And there’s no guarantee that realizing their dreams will lead to happiness and fulfillment, as Dong-man and Ae-ra are about to discover — in fact, sometimes chasing your dream can become downright dangerous.

Round 14: “The calm before the stormâ€

It’s a night in the near future, and someone whose face we don’t see is taken away by ambulance. Ae-ra and Coach Hwang look on in shock as Dong-man’s voice narrates, “Every storm in life comes when you have your guard down.â€

Back in the present, Dong-man prepares to defend Landlady Hwang’s apartment from intruders. He slowly approaches the closet where they’ve heard suspicious noises, and he reaches out to open the door…

Ae-ra suddenly yells Dong-man’s name, scaring the stuffing out of him. She tells him that there’s nobody there and yanks him out of the apartment. He protests all the way down the stairs, but Ae-ra had noticed that Landlady Hwang was wearing lipstick and figured that she just had a boyfriend over.

Dong-man gasps with maidenly horror, marveling at Ae-ra’s women’s intuition. Ae-ra suddenly asks if he’s seen Hye-ran since she moved in, but Dong-man doesn’t know why she should care.

He objects when Ae-ra starts to follow him home, telling her that she can’t come over anymore because it’s too difficult for him. He asks if she’s conducting some sort of self-control test on him before hurrying inside, but Ae-ra just lets herself in, hee.

After they’re gone, their dads tumble out of Landlady Hwang’s closet, surprising Nam-il. He seems to guess what’s happening and asks Landlady Hwang, “Which one is it?†The dads catch onto the fact that Nam-il calls Landlady Hwang “Mom,†and he says with a slightly sarcastic tone that he’s her one and only son, Kim Nam-il.

On their way out, Landlady Hwang tells the dads that she knows why they’re here, but she won’t hide anymore. Dong-man’s father asks why she came when she was doing fine, but she says that she was never fine, and that she’s never stopped being a mom. Ae-ra’s dad asks why she’d speak up now, but Landlady Hwang asks if it’s still a bad thing to be Hwang Bok-hee’s child.

Inside, Nam-il finds the box containing Landlady Hwang’s photographs and looks through it curiously. He finds an old flip-phone with a teddy bear charm still attached.

As they watch TV, Ae-ra asks Dong-man if he’s still going to the weigh-in tomorrow for his fight with Tak-soo. Trying to distract her, Dong-man mentions her overlapping interviews tomorrow. Not to be outwitted, Ae-ra just says that she’s not objecting to him fighting, just to him fighting Tak-soo.

A strange noise from upstairs draws their attention, and Ae-ra whispers that Hye-ran is home. Again, Dong-man asks why she cares. Hye-ran is home, looking pale and depressed. She looks over her alimony agreement, in which it’s explicitly stated that she’s not allowed to talk about her ex-husband’s family.

As the dads leave the villa, Dong-man’s father wonders when Landlady Hwang got such a grown-up son. Ae-ra’s dad asks if they should visit the kids, but Dong-man’s dad nixes that idea, since they have no good excuse for being here.
