EPISODE 15

So the new case actually has quite a lot going on that's fairly narratively interesting. In the first place, this is really more of a three plot story than one. We've got the investigation team first, obviously. Then there's the terrified parents. And lastly, there are the three girls trapped in the cold room. So simple variety alone keeps the story interesting. Alternately, the episode is a procedural mystery, an emotional drama, and then a horror movie.

None of these are done exactly perfectly, in isolation. The investigation team's frustrating lack of clues makes speculation about the case difficult. The acting in the emotional drama could use a little work, considering that we're supposed to seriously believe one of the parents as a possible co-conspirator. And then there's the whole set-up of the icy room. Did the original episode (season two, episode seven for reference) take place in winter, or at least somewhere far north? Because the weather right now is really not of the freeze to death variety.

But these are all just nitpicks, because the pulpy elements are all spot on. There are quite a few more plot twists than I was expecting here, especially considering how predictable previous episodes have been. What really helps with this is that there are quite a few potential suspects. The coach, any of the parents, any of the three girls themselves, are all potential co-conspirators. I really like how the sheer complexity of the crime was not glossed over.

Since we so little of the main criminal directly, it's easy to assume that this person's actions in the background are generally competent. This has been another nice contrast with previous episodes, where it was much easier to get annoyed at the villain's poorly considered motives or the arbitrary story construction because we were given way too much information. here, even potential breakthroughs prove to be deceptive.

As for the next case, eh, what can I say, we're only given fragments. But these fragments, at least, are fairly promising. It's more of "Criminal Minds" at its best- a focus on mystery elements and characterization, using the profiling premise as a driver for the story rather than the other way around. "Criminal Minds" has been very hit and miss in general, which is nonetheless better than just missing all the time, since it at least gives me occasional cause for optimism.

EPISODE 16

A very good mystery hook is set up almost immediately- though lacking in any apparently obvious clues, we do know that the murderer has wacky fingers. I like this because usually, random witnesses in crime procedurals have disproportionately photo accurate memory. That the big clue is something explicitly weird and obviously noticeable tic is actually a pretty good clue, and not something a mentally ill murder suspect would necessarily even notice he was doing.

That's one of the better possible angles to go after in a serial killer story- focus on the weirdness, rather than the grotesque factor of how the serial killer murders his victims. This episode is thankfully absent of any such gory imagery save for the pictures of what the victim looks like after the serial killer is done with them. This also has the advantage of putting us on the same page as the investigators. We have the same information that they do.

The philosophical point being made is a tad murky, although full exposition of it is so late I don't hold it as too much of a problem. As usual, though, the ideas about the nature of justice and the inefficiency of the criminal justice system to sufficiently punish criminals are pretty weird. And of course, quintessentially American. It amazes me that the country with the highest gross prison population on the planet still blares out propaganda about how we don't have enough people in jail.

This also led to that weird feeling when I correctly guessed the serial killer's motive way earlier than I should have, solely because one of the victims ended up being a Catholic priest. There is something Catholic priests are famous for yes, but the ones in South Korea have never engaged in that kind of activity. As far as we know anyway. This does accidentally make the mystery more clever, but only for people not familiar with the stereotype.

Anyway, the primer we get for the next case is also fairly promising. I liked how we got to see the entire full context of the crime, yet almost immediately discover that this context was quite misleading, and even the room itself wasn't what it looked like. No, it's not another movie set. If there's one thing I have to hand to the production team of "Criminal Minds", they picked a pretty diverse set of episodes to adapt. There's surprisingly little overlap to the plots considering they all have to adhere to the same basic formula.
