I feel like they are keeping it secret and will announce everything at once. They are trying to increase our curiosity. There was not a single pic from script reading. Was there one(script reading) at all???

Bride of the Water God 2017 finds its home on Mondays and Tuesdays

Mark your calendars: Fantasy rom-com manhwa adaptation Bride of the Water God 2017 now officially has a spot on tvN’s upcoming schedule, and will be a Monday-Tuesday drama to follow soon-to-launch sci-fi drama Circle.

I admit to not quite knowing what to expect of this drama, because there are aspects I think I’d enjoy, mixed with some question marks. On one hand, the original premise is chock-full of interesting elements, such as its fusion historical bent, featuring a water god presiding over a drought-stricken land, whose residents offer up a bride as a sacrifice in exchange for rain. The tvN version, on the other hand, is updating the setting to modern-day Korea rather than Joseon and calling itself a spinoff rather than remake, which seems like a fairly big change. But on the other hand (if you had three hands), there’s nothing that says you can’t make an interesting drama in a new setting.

In the drama, Nam Joo-hyuk (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju) plays the water god, Ha-baek, with Shin Se-kyung (Six Flying Dragons) playing his human offering-turned-bride, So-ah. Gong Myung (Individualist Ji-young) plays wind god Bi-ryum, who helps Ha-baek and is in love with the (literal) goddess played by Krystal (She’s So Lovable), Hye-ra, who in turn is in love with Ha-baek, who, of course, falls in love with heroine So-ah. In case you didn’t follow that, just imagine a character chart where the love arrows point from each person to everybody else. It’s basically that.

Bride of the Water God 2017 held its initial script read in March, then began filming shortly thereafter. It’s currently in the thick of production, and still has two months to go before its July premiere, which in dramaland is a decent chunk of time. Let’s hope it makes good use of its ample lead time and delivers on its promise of heightened production quality, which I feel safe entrusting to Misaeng and Arang and the Magistrate writer Jang Yoon-jung and PD Kim Byung-soo of NineQueen In-hyun’s Man, and Vampire Prosecutor. (To be honest, I still find the casting a little odd—not necessarily on an individual level but together as a whole—and would have had greater reservations if not for the producers; the strength of their credits does go a long way, though!)

Circle will premiere next Monday and will run for 12 episodes, which puts Bride of the Water God’s premiere around the first week of July.

tv Report via Naver: [Exclusive] Nam Joo Hyuk x Shin Se Kyung, to air in July after 'Circle'

1. [+2,503, -405] If you've read the original, you know that Nam Joo Hyuk doesn't fit the role

2. [+2,429, -468] Hul even if I don't watch it, I'm 100% sure Nam Joo Hyuk will get criticized for his acting.. On top of that, there's Shin Se Kyung.. They must think visuals are enough for lead roles

3. [+1,812, -373] Who's gonna do the acting? I'm very worried

4. [+1,964, -458] Collab of Shin Se Kyung's awkward eye bulging skills and Nam Joo Hyuk's lisp

5. [+380, -30] What an interesting casting of leads

6. [+216, -14] Circle hasn't even aired yet but what's up with all the announcements about this one now? Why not more news about Circle~~

7. [+441, -116] Nam Joo Hyuk, Shin Se Kyung, Gong Myung, Krystal... they all suck at acting

8. [+391, -105] There are no other actors? Must be the power of big agencies. Why cast people who can't act?

9. [+292, -78] They don't match and they're not good at acting, why give them the lead roles?

10. [+281, -70] They're the leads? It's not too late to replace them ã… ã…  I like Nam Joo Hyuk and Shin Se Kyung but they're not the right people for the roles..

First script reading for Bride of the Water God

WaterBride-1.jpg

Get ready for some fun! The fantasy rom-com manhwa adaptation Bride of the Water God 2017 held its first script read and released cast photos. In the original popular manhwa, a girl from a drought-stricken land is offered to the water god as a sacrifice for rain. Unlike the original, the remake will be set in 2017 and will have a completely new setup while using the original characters and their dynamics.

In this new story, Nam Joo-hyuk (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju) plays the main role of the water god Ha-baek. He is described as a serious, chic, and narcissistic god. Shin Se-kyung (Six Flying Dragons) plays So-ah, a doctor who is the unknowing bride to the water god, whose family is destined to serve the water god for generations.

Im Joo-hwan (Uncontrollably Fond) plays self-made entrepreneur and perfect human, Hu-ye, who is even more perfect than the gods. Krystal (She’s So Lovable) plays the goddess Mu-ra, who is an official of the god-world water department and is sent to the human world. Gong Myung (Individualist Ji-young) plays the god Bi-ryum, who is an official of the sky department.

This drama has some heavy hitters behind it with PD Kim Byung-soo (NineQueen In-hyun’s Man) and writer Jung Yoon-jung (MisaengArang and the Magistrate) both signed on. I loved Queen In-yun’s Man and I lived for Misaeng, so I’m looking forward to what this pairing has to offer. Unfortunately, I also have a feeling that Bride of the Water God 2017 will inevitably be compared to The Lonely Shining Goblin, which has become the benchmark for all new fantasy dramas. Both shows share similar elements: a bride promised to a god and a spiritual world functioning within the human realm, but hopefully Bride of the Water God 2017 will make a name for itself by doing things differently.

Bride of the Water God 2017 will air on Mondays and Tuesdays following Circle. It premieres July 3 on tvN.

Floating petals under romantic moonlight in Bride of the Water God teaser

bridewater7.jpg

Oh my! Well, this certainly is pretty—the first teaser for tvN’s manhwa-based drama Bride of the Water God 2017 is out, featuring the main couple Nam Joo-hyuk (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju) and Shin Se-kyung (Six Flying Dragons). This new fantasy-romance drama is about Ha-baek, the egotistical god of water who deigns to descend to Earth where he meets the heroine So-ah, a doctor whose family has been fated to serve the water god for generations.

The teaser begins with a sketch of the original manhwa characters standing amidst gently falling cherry blossom petals, staring soulfully into each other’s eyes. Then slowly they turn into their real-life drama counterparts, Shin Se-kyung and Nam Joo-hyuk, as she narrates: “Popular manhwa Bride of the Water God is reborn as a new spinoff drama. A divine-fatale romance to begin in July.â€

Not seen in this first teaser are the others on the main cast: Im Joo-hwan (Uncontrollably Fond) who plays a hotel resort CEO who becomes the second suitor to the heroine, Gong Myung (Individualist Ji-young) who is a wind god that harbors a love for Krystal’s (She’s So Lovable) character, a minor water deity who is infatuated with Ha-baek. Whoa, that’s a lot of angsty one-sided love for one drama.

As a fan of the original source material, I can’t say that I wasn’t nervous when I first heard about this drama being a spinoff set in the modern era, especially because they were doing away with some of the most appealing aspects, namely rich historical context and elegantly embroidered hanboks. However, seeing the exquisite scenery of this short teaser helps me feel optimistic that perhaps the aesthetic beauty of the original will be preserved.

Upcoming Monday-Tuesday fantasy rom-com Bride of the Water God 2017 will begin airing on July 3.
