Floating petals under romantic moonlight in Bride of the Water God teaser

Oh my! Well, this certainly is pretty—the first teaser for tvN’s manhwa-based drama Bride of the Water God 2017 is out, featuring the main couple Nam Joo-hyuk (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju) and Shin Se-kyung (Six Flying Dragons). This new fantasy-romance drama is about Ha-baek, the egotistical god of water who deigns to descend to Earth where he meets the heroine So-ah, a doctor whose family has been fated to serve the water god for generations.

The teaser begins with a sketch of the original manhwa characters standing amidst gently falling cherry blossom petals, staring soulfully into each other’s eyes. Then slowly they turn into their real-life drama counterparts, Shin Se-kyung and Nam Joo-hyuk, as she narrates: “Popular manhwa Bride of the Water God is reborn as a new spinoff drama. A divine-fatale romance to begin in July.â€

Not seen in this first teaser are the others on the main cast: Im Joo-hwan (Uncontrollably Fond) who plays a hotel resort CEO who becomes the second suitor to the heroine, Gong Myung (Individualist Ji-young) who is a wind god that harbors a love for Krystal’s (She’s So Lovable) character, a minor water deity who is infatuated with Ha-baek. Whoa, that’s a lot of angsty one-sided love for one drama.

As a fan of the original source material, I can’t say that I wasn’t nervous when I first heard about this drama being a spinoff set in the modern era, especially because they were doing away with some of the most appealing aspects, namely rich historical context and elegantly embroidered hanboks. However, seeing the exquisite scenery of this short teaser helps me feel optimistic that perhaps the aesthetic beauty of the original will be preserved.

Upcoming Monday-Tuesday fantasy rom-com Bride of the Water God 2017 will begin airing on July 3.

Upcoming tvN fantasy romance drama 'Bride of the Water God' revealed a newer, longer teaser starring the leads Nam Joo Hyuk and Shin Se Kyung!

The drama is based off of a Korean manga series of the same name, also starring Gong Myung,Lim Joo Hwanf(x)'s Krystal, and more. The theme of this teaser is 'Romeo & Juliet'-esque, showing the two leads meeting on either side of a large aquatic tank, with Nam Joo Hyuk stating, "I've finally found her. My servant", and Shin Se Kyung likewise stating, "My god."

The star-crossed lovers of tvN’s Bride of the Water God 2017

Well, if nothing else, I can certainly count on this show to bring plenty of pretty. We’ve got another short teaser out for tvN’s upcoming fantasy romance Bride of the Water God 2017, and it’s just as moody and beautiful as the first one. I’m really hoping the colors in these teasers make it into the actual show ‘cause they make these scenes look gorgeous.

There’s nothing in the teaser that reveals anything about the actual story, but we see Nam Joo-hyuk (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju) and Shin Se-kyung (Six Flying Dragons) catching each other’s eye on either side of a fish tank, a la Romeo + Juliet. How Baz Lurhmann of you, Show. I half-expected “Kissing You†to come on, but the Ghibli-esque background music is lovely, too. Nam Joo-hyuk, who plays the titular water god, then goes, “I’ve waited a long time for you. My servant,†to which Shin Se-kyung replies, “My god.†*facepalm*

Okay. So, I get that her being his “servant†is part of the plot, but the moment he called her that in the teaser I felt like I got ice water thrown on me when I was happily enjoying the dreamy atmosphere. Maybe it was the presentation of it that threw me off, because it almost seems like his line was supposed to be swoony or romantic. Anyway, I’m willing to turn a blind eye because I adore fantasy dramas and it sounds like the supernatural world in Bride of the Water God is well thought-out and intricate with a deity hierarchy and everything, which I’m excited to learn more about. I also just want Im Joo-hwan (Uncontrollably Fond) back on my screen in a good drama.

Im Joo-hwan’s hotel CEO character will play the other human in the love pentagon that also consists of our two leads, and Gong Myung’s (Individualist Ji-young) wind god, and Krystal’s (She’s So Lovable) minor water deity character. That’s a lot of criss-crossed wires, but is it bad that I’m kind of looking forward to the angsty merry-go-round of longing stares that’s bound to happen?

Bride of the Water God 2017 will premiere on July 3 in the Monday-Tuesday slot, after currently airing Circle ends its run.

Have you read it? If not, his line actually fits really well. I have not read the book in so long and I didn't finish it but if I remember correctly, the Water God was sorta an ass. He was rude to So Ah especially in the beginning. You understand why though when the story goes on

I sorta had a feeling but I wasn't sure. You gave no indication that it was taken from somewhere else. The top half yes, you can tell. The bottom half I thought you where putting your two sense in. Maybe next time indicate or something 😊

Didn't see it and I'm still new here so I'm learning as I go. So I had no clue what that meant and I wouldn't be the only one
