Negus (Ge'ezáŠáŒ‰áˆ¥nÉ™gūś IPA: [nɨguËɬ]AmharicnigÅ«s?; cf. TigrinyaáŠáŒ‹áˆ²? negus) is a royal title in the Ethiopian Semitic languages. It denotes a monarch, such as the Bahri Negus (Lord of the Seas) of the Medri Bahri in pre-1890 Eritrea, and the Negus in pre-1974 Ethiopia. The title has subsequently been used to translate the words "king" or "emperor" in Biblical and other literature.

Did they seriously need to use a word that has the same homophone as the N word? This is  disgusting and it's junior competition too  :twitch:

That prick of a woman even had the balls to ask the poor fellow to repeat the word, LOUDLY like wow... I'm done...  :omgwtf:

This is pretty much lowkey being racist and getting away with it because it's legit word.

not everything has to be equated with English language are you going to condemn Korean for having a word that sounds the same with the N word even though it has very different meanings?

this is a positive word why are you trying to make it into something else just cause you HEAR a different word? I'm sure there are many other words out there that sound like offensive words you could be mad at too right now go grab a dictionary  :derp:

but the two words aren't homophones they might be just phonetically similar. Anyway I don't see what's supposed to be racist. Maybe it's just pronounced similarly to the N-word in America

Like how Russia is pronounced one way in Russian and another way in America

IDK about you guys but the two words sound homophone to me.

What I'm saying is they shouldn't have used this legit word in this junior competition.

Are ya'll blind and didn't see how awkward the child looked like?

If you were at that age and you know the N word and were asked to spell it out (which he didn't know the spelling of the Negus word)

how the fuck would you have handled it?

It's funny how some of you assume I didn't read the definition of the word or know what it means when I even posted the original description of the word as a quote when I posted this thread.

Seems like some people never bother to read the main post.

I think he was definitely taken aback that that word was used, but I think he was more nervous about getting it right I doubt 'racism' or 'scandalous' was going through his mind
Also, this is not the judges fault. They don't compile the list of words, they pronounce the word like how it's pronounced in the dictionary.
As for the judges making him repeat the word, you can interpret that any which way you want, but I was obsessed with spelling bees when i was younger and one thing I noticed is that you have to say the word clearly before you spell it. If the judges hear you pronounce the word incorrectly/struggling with the word the judges will most likely make you repeat it just so you have a better chance of spelling it which is most likely what happened since the judge nodded after she heard him pronouncing it correctly.

Just my .02

Judges don't compile the words for spelling bees though

*the person who strategically picked that word as a curveball (very common in spelling bees) knew what they were doing and knew what the children would think of when they heard it and the judge who kept asking him to repeat it knew what they were doing too

it's very obvious and I'm pretty sure that is what OP is trying to get at
