Why is Gu9udan underrated on OH compared to their popularity in Korea?

I mean, their debut song charted really good considering it was a debut song, also 20K sales for a debut album is something that many popular groups don't reach either. They have been doing much better than some other new gen groups but they are always underestimated and they lack hype on OH (or overall internationally) compared to those groups.

International fans generally don't talk about non big 3 groups unless they've become huge(BTS, gfriend, mamamoo).

Oh My Girl and WJSN have more hype than gugdan but Gugudan has so far peaked higher than all of their songs (Except OMG's Aing but OMG still had lot's of hype on OH before Aing too)

I guess it's because i-fans mainly supported Sejeong, Mina and Nayoung on P101, but they didn't like their debut because of the cute concept.

Personally, while I'm not into the group and I agree that they'd suit a girl crush concept better than a cute concept, I enjoyed their debut. Wonderland is not a bad song and their album has some gems, like Diary.

Their track was musically definitely designed to be appealing to the domestic market. Girl groups rely more heavily on general public support than boy groups do so honestly (knowing a few girl groups would be debuting off of the back of Produce 101) I think that was a deliberate move.

That being said, I don't track sales figures so I don't know how good those figures are, but Korean media definitely talked a lot about how underwhelming Gugudan's debut was so it certainly wasn't universally loved in Korea. A lot of people felt that there was something 'underprepared' feeling about the song/mv.

no not because it was cute concept...not all i-fans have that mindset that cute=bad

its just the actual song was....bland as hell.....literally just the song

Most people were expecting them to debut with a different concept, something similar to what nayoung, mina and sejeong first performed on P101 may be. Having those expectations made their debut song rather bland. And the whole concept was just not what most wanted for them, initially at least. Tbh their debut song did not impressed me but it wasnt bad? I have come to like it months later after forgeting how it even sounded, gave it a second listen and it's actually not so bad. May be the mv turned me off lol but the song alone is ok for a debut imo

Like everyone stated above, I think it is because of the song. It does not suits many international fans tastes (hence not hype in OH). For Oh My Girl and WJSN, most of their songs so far fit the international taste.

Probably the fact that they were hyped as the 'female VIXX' but their debut seemed far from it? That was my case, at least.

I thought they'd be sporting the dark concepts VIXX made popular but then... what are these fairy tale shenanigans?

(Turns out they're 'female VIXX' because of the 'concepts' thing.)

Also, I never watched P101 so I don't have much idea about Sejeong, I simply watched out Gugudan's debut because they're from Jelpi. Tbh Sejeong doesn't stand out when G9 is together as a group, idk why.

Their debut album wasn't that unique, but I liked it. My bias is Hana! I saw them perform 'Wonderland' and 'Diary' live last year here in my country last year and they were fantastic   :lub: I hope Jelpi comes up with something that'll make them stand out more.

Sejeong is really popular in Korea but not here. You don't see many threads about her, heck even her official thread is almost dead. Since she is more popular than Gugudan, you get the picture..

Their debut track, Wonderland is lacklustre and the concept is not well received by fans. Although, Diary is a total jam.

Let's hope Act 2 Narcissus will offer better tracks and concept. Dear Friends ftw!!!

Because their debut was a bit lackluster, and most of their Korean popularity comes from Sejeong

Their debut manage to sell so much due to Se Jeong popularity

Without her, their debut would not able to reach that kind of sale

nah i live in europe and ppl there loves infinite or block b

Aren't block b and infinite considered big? I mean I gave BTS, gfriend as examples, because those are the ones that came to mind. But I think some of the older groups non big 3 are definitely popular

Because Sejeong isn't as popular internationally as she is in Korea, so there isn't the same level of awareness about Gugudan among i-fans as there is in Korea. She's one of the top among the hottest idols at the moment, but a lot of i-fans can barely recognize her name.
